Cholesterol granuloma (CG) is a foreign body reaction to the deposition of cholesterol crystals, usually found in association to chronic middle ear diseases, being highly uncommon in the paranasal sinuses. Absorbable polyglycolide pins were used for fixation of 94 chevron osteotomies in 70 patients at the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, Helsinki University Central Hospital, between 1986 and 1992. Postoperative osteolytic changes around the degrading pin occurred in 21 of 94 (22%) metatarsal heads. In 17 of 21 metatarsal heads, polydioxanone-coated polyglycolide pins were used. Two cases of early silicone synovitis, 12 and 18 months after surgery for partial scaphoid implant arthroplasty (Swanson design) are reported. None of the implants had been fixed by Kirschner wire or sutured to the radius or an other carpal bone. Both implants had been immobilized for six weeks. Initially the result in both cases was good. The aim of this study was to evaluate rabbit soft tissue reactions to bioactive glass 13-93 mesh by using a histological and immunohistochemical analysis. Bioactive glass (13-93) mesh fixed with 3 wt % chitosan was implanted into the dorsal subcutaneous space of New Zealand White rabbits (n=18) for six, 12, and 24 weeks, respectively. Implantable medical devices improve quality of life and reduce mortality by restoring the form and function of the human body. Medical devices implanted in subcutaneous tissue elicit wound-healing events that encapsulate the device. To investigate the foreign-body response to devices of clinically relevant size, we studied the relationship between capsule thickness, vascular density, and blood flow within the capsule. In nine canines, we implanted 40 subcutaneous devices (polysulfone n=14, titanium n=17, silicone-coated n=9). Devices and surrounding tissue structures were harvested at 208 ± 142 (mean ± standard deviation) days after implantation. Tissues were processed for histological analysis with light microscopy.
