This study was undertaken to determine whether the production of melatonin, a hormone regulating sleep in relation to the light/dark cycle, is altered in Huntington's disease. We analyzed the circadian rhythm of melatonin in a 24-hour study of cohorts of control, premanifest, and stage II/III Huntington's disease subjects. The mean and acrophase melatonin concentrations were significantly reduced in stage II/III Huntington's disease subjects compared with controls. We also observed a nonsignificant trend toward reduced mean and acrophase melatonin in premanifest Huntington's disease subjects.

An opacified intraocular lens explanted from a patient in the postoperative period after phacoemulsification was investigated to find the cause of opacification. Ground reaction forces from two force plates are used to determine the cyclic oscillations of the body center of mass while walking at preferred speed. Good approximations to the oscillations may be obtained from formulae containing just the first- and second-order Fourier coefficients of the combined left-right ground reaction forces taken over a complete walking cycle. Spectral analysis techniques were used to quantitate the association between respiration and heart rate variability in eight healthy and eight asphyxiated infants born at term gestation. Respiratory sinus arrhythmia was demonstrated in all healthy infants. This arrhythmia was significantly diminished in asphyxiated newborn infants. We conclude that newborn infants with low Apgar scores have a reduced respiratory sinus arrhythmia and that this reduction could account for the loss of short-term heart rate variability commonly associated with asphyxia.
