Integration of traditional and innovative characterization techniques for flux-based assessment of dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) sites.

Key attributes of the source zone and the expanding dissolved plume at a trichloroethene (TCE) site in Australia were evaluated using trends in groundwater monitoring data along with data from on-line volatile organic compound (VOC) samplers and passive flux meters (PFMs) deployed in selected wells. These data indicate that: (1) residual TCE source mass in the saturated zone, estimated using two innovative techniques, is small ( approximately 10 kg), which is also reflected in small source mass discharge ( approximately 3 g/day); (2) the plume is disconnecting, based on TCE concentration conto

Seasonality of macroalgal communities in a subtropical drainage basin in Paraná state, southern Brazil.

Seasonal dynamics of macroalgal communities was analyzed monthly by samplings in three stream segments of the Pedras River Basin, mid-south region of Paraná State, southern Brazil, from April 2004 to March 2005. The seasonal fluctuations in macroalgal species richness and abundance were correlated with selected environmental variables. In general, the seasonal distribution patterns of these communities were distinct from those reported from other tropical and temperate regions, with higher macroalgal richness and abundance observed from late spring to late fall. Multiple linear regression anal

Metals in bulk deposition and surface waters at two upland locations in northern England.

Concentrations of aluminium and minor metals (Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, Sr, Cd, Ba, Pb) were measured in precipitation and surface water at two upland locations (Upper Duddon Valley, UDV; Great Dun Fell, GDF) in northern England for 1 year commencing April 1998. At both locations, the loads in bulk precipitation were at the lower ends of ranges reported for other rural and remote sites, for the period 1985-1995. The deposited metals were mostly in the dissolved form, and their concentrations tended to be greatest when rainfall volumes were low. The concentrations of Cu, Zn and Pb in deposition were corr

[Cryptosporidium oocysts and epidemic safety of drinking water in the Russian Federation].

The paper provides evidence that Cryptosporidium oocysts should be necessarily included as an index of the epidemic safety of drinking water in our country. This is evidenced by: the wide spread of cryptosporidiosis among animals and human beings; that of the pathogen of this disease in the environment; large-scale outbreaks of cryptosporidiosis in the world's population; no sanitary and parasitological drinking water monitoring in our country; the use of this parasitological index to evaluate drinking water quality in some countries (USA, UK, Ukraine, etc.).

Two new species of imagocidal Hydromermis (Nematoda: Mermithidae) from Endochironomus subtendens (Townes) (Diptera: Chironomidae).

Hydromermis viridis n. sp. and Hydromermis gastroviridis n. sp. are described from June and August emerging imagos, respectively, of Endochironomus subtendens (Townes) in Lake Itasca, Clearwater County, Minnesota. The position of the mouth, shape of the posterior end, structure and size of the spicule, absence of an excretory pore, arrangement of male tail musculature, and measurements separate the new species form other species of Hydromermis as well as from one another. The 2 species are placed in the genus Hydromermis though having a rounded tail and only 6 hypodermal cords at midbody. An a

[The fauna and ecology of blackflies (Diptera, Simuliidae) in the Republic of Guinea].

Twenty-nine Simulium species were recorded in the Republic of Guinea. The geographical distribution of the blackfly species in its areas is shown in the paper. The most probable vector of Onchocerca volvulus are S. damnosum s. str and S. sirbanum which predominate in the landscapes of Sudan and Guinea savannas. S. yahense, S. soubrense, and S. sanctipauli are likely to be vectors in the forest-savannas and tropical rain forests.

Seasonal occurrence of Simulium ochraceum, the principal vector of Onchocerca volvulus in the southeastern endemic area of Guatemala.

Investigation of the seasonal occurrence of Simulium ochraceum, the principal vector of the Guatemalan strain of Onchocerca volvulus, were made from August 1978 until January 1980 in the upper reaches of the two main rivers of endemic onchocerciasis in Escuintla, Guatemala. The results showed that in the late dry season S. ochraceum larvae were restricted to permanent streams at intermediate altitudes. During the rainy season, though, the preimaginal sites of this black fly extended to the upper reaches of the numerous small intermittent streams due to partial subterranean flows. Seasonal occu

[Methods for population sampling of the immature stages of Simulium damnosum Theobald, 1903 (Diptera, Simuliidae) in West Africa. I. Preliminary observations on the vertical distribution of larvae and pupae (author's transl)].

Three techniques for sampling larvae of Simulium damnosum in different water depths are described. Preliminary results prove that the larvae can settle much deeper, i.e. up to 3 m, than reported before (0-30 cm). Without impairment pupation takes place in any depth.

Quality and management status of the drinking water supplies in a semiarid region of Northeastern Brazil.

Surface and groundwater resources in the Seridó Region (Brazilian semiarid) were investigated to evaluate their current quality conditions and suitability for domestic use. The water was characterized in terms of physical, chemical, and radiological parameters; including those required by the Brazilian Drinking Water Quality Standard (DWQS). Information about major and trace elements and radiological aspects of the water are reported for the first time. Salinization was confirmed as a key problem in the region, driven natural and anthropogenic. Overall, water has poor organoleptic characterist

Does glochidia infestation of the freshwater pearl mussel (Margaritifera margaritifera) affect foraging behavior and growth in brown trout (Salmo trutta)?

Fish serve as hosts to a wide range of parasites, which can affect them in many ways, including their survival, growth, and foraging behavior. The highly threatened unionid mussels have an ectoparasitic life stage on the gills, skin, or fins of fish. Here, we compared prey handling time and growth between groups of brown trout (Salmo trutta) that were infested and non-infested with glochidia larvae of the freshwater pearl mussel (Margaritifera margaritifera). In a prey handling test, individual trout were presented with one large prey (maggot) and one small prey (Gammarus pulex) daily over eig

Shifting waters: how habitat alteration affects host-parasite dynamics in freshwater ecosystems.

Human activities have profoundly altered freshwater ecosystems, reshaping host-parasite dynamics with sometimes far-reaching ecological and public health consequences. Based on the examples of stream degradation and restoration, dam construction, agriculture, and urbanization, this review synthesizes how habitat alteration influences parasite communities in freshwater systems. Restoration efforts, such as those in Germany's Emscher River, demonstrate partial recovery of parasite diversity, though persistent stressors often favour generalist taxa with simple life cycles, reflecting incomplete e

Histopathologic Evaluation, Ultrastructure, and Molecular Characterization of Acanthocephalan Infections in Freshwater Turtles.

Turtle acanthocephalans are a depauperate group of helminths, yet they parasitize a quarter of all turtle species in North America. Despite acanthocephalans being common in turtles, their potential as disease-causing agents remains unknown. In other vertebrate hosts, acanthocephalans are known to cause pathologic changes upon attachment (via with their armed proboscis) to the intestinal wall of the host. Herein, we report new turtle host associations, ultrastructural characterization, and molecular data for turtle acanthocephalans. However, the primary goal of this study was to evaluate whethe

Experimental manipulation of freshwater wetland hydroperiod alters litter decomposition and macroinvertebrate assemblage structure.

Climate-driven shifts in hydrological cycling are altering freshwater wetlands globally and may disrupt carbon processing, yet the impacts on litter decomposition and the underlying drivers are still poorly understood. We experimentally manipulated hydroperiod in twelve wetlands in Georgia, U.S. to include permanent, temporary, and dry ponds from 2018 to 2021. Litterbags were deployed and collected at early (30-day), mid (60-day), and late (90-day) sampling intervals to quantify detrital processing including decomposition rate (n = 343) and macroinvertebrate assemblages (n = 148). Decompositio

The impact of environmental variability and clothing type on the transfer of marine diatoms as trace evidence indicators in coastal locations.

Diatoms are a species-rich group of microalgae, abundant in freshwater, marine, and soil environments. Subsequently, they may be used as a form of trace evidence, reconstructing links between persons and places involved in crime. Despite previous studies demonstrating the forensic value of diatoms in freshwater and soil habitats, no previous research has explored their transfer and persistence dynamics in marine environments. This study therefore aimed to assess diatom transfer to clothing following immersion in five coastal and one freshwater location, offering a novel contribution to the rap

Freshwater algal species consortia exhibit optimal biomass and biodiesel production under calcium chloride and magnesium sulphate stress.

Microalgae have been pioneering microbial cell factories for sustainable bioenergy production and other high-value product extraction. The present study affirms using mixed algal species (MAS) as a consortium for escalated biomass yield and lipid production under different calcium chloride and magnesium sulphate concentrations toward biofuel production. Of the different concentrations of Ca and Mg concentrations tested, 75 mg/L of calcium and 125 mg/L of magnesium displayed maximal biomass yield, cell density, and biomass productivity. The optimization revealed 18 days of day-light incubation

Factors contributing to the abundance and spatial distribution of the invasive intermediate host snail (Pseudosuccinea columella) in uMgungundlovu district, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

Fascioliasis is a parasitic disease commonly affecting cattle, goats, and sheep globally. Lymnaeidae snail species are important in the epidemiology and dispersal of fascioliasis since they are intermediate hosts of the Fasciola spp. Our study mapped at micro-geographical scale, the distribution and abundance of Pseudosuccinea columella in uMgungundlovu district, which is in the northern part of the KwaZulu-Natal province, and measured physicochemical parameters at potential transmission sites. The study examined the impact of physicochemical parameters and presence of other snail species on P

Metacollinia emscheri n. sp., a novel sanguicolous apostome ciliate of freshwater amphipods (Gammarus spp.).

We describe a novel sanguicolous parasitic ciliate, Metacollinia emscheri n. sp., found in the freshwater amphipods Gammarus pulex and G. fossarum. This ciliate infected 8.05 % of the amphipods collected in a German stream catchment, the Boye, a tributary of the river Emscher. The ciliate showed morphological characteristics fitting the genus Metacollinia. Different life stages of variable size occurred simultaneously in the hemocoel throughout the hosts' body. The tomont had 40-47 slightly spiraled kineties, a non-ciliated cortical band, a large macronucleus, and contractile vacuoles arranged

Evidence for transporter-mediated uptake of environmental L-glutamate in a freshwater sponge, Ephydatia muelleri.

The freshwater sponge, Ephydatia muelleri, lacks a nervous or endocrine system and yet it exhibits a coordinated whole-body action known as a "sneeze" that can be triggered by exposure to L-glutamate. It is not known how L-glutamate is obtained by E. muelleri in sufficient quantities (i.e., 70 µM) to mediate this response endogenously. The present study tested the hypothesis that L-glutamate can be directly acquired from the environment across the body surface of E. muelleri. We demonstrate carrier mediated uptake of two distinct saturable systems with maximal transport rates (Jmax) of 64.27 ±
