Prevalences of Loa loa microfilaraemia throughout the area endemic for the infection.

Several cases of encephalopathy recorded in Cameroon since 1991 were in patients with very high, coincident, Loa loa microfilaraemias who ha … geria, southern and central Cameroon, the south of the Central African Republic, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and the north and west of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (ex-Zaire), where ivermectin treatment, although indicated, is most likely to lead to adverse reactions because of L. loa infections. Additional surveys, to delineate the areas highly i …

Feeding lactose-intolerant children with a powdered fermented milk.

Fresh yogurt has been proposed as a milk substitute for lactase-deficient patients. We investigated the possibility that a dried, low-fat milk fermented by yogurt microorganisms would be effective. Processing of a fermented milk by spray-drying led to a powder with persistence of lactase activity (11.7 units/g) without storage at 4 degrees C and stable at room temperature (20-23 degrees C). The tolerance and absorption of 10.5 g of lactose in a volume of 150 ml was studied in 25 Gabonese lactase-deficient children aged 5-14 years in the form of a standard humanized milk formula followed 1 week…

[Cervical lymph node tuberculosis in Libreville: epidemiology, diagnosis, and therapy].

OBJECTIVES: To analyse the epidemiological, diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of cervical lymph node tuberculosis (TB) in Libreville. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective descriptive multicentre study included all 140 patients with complete files who were treated for cervical lymph node TB from 2001 through 2006, regardless of whether TB was found at any other site. RESULTS: A slight predominance of men was observed. The infected lymph nodes were most often located at the posterior triangle of the neck. Histological proof was obtained for 81 patients. We recorded 94 cures, 4 cases of th

Linear enamel hypoplasia in the great apes: analysis by genus and locality.

Most studies report a high prevalence of linear enamel hypoplasia (LEH) in the great apes relative to other nonhuman primates and some human populations. It is unclear if this difference is a direct result of poor health status for the great apes, or if it represents differential incidence due to a lower threshold (sensu Goodman and Rose, 1990 Am. J. Phys. Anthropol. [suppl.] 33:59-110) for the occurrence of enamel hypoplasia among great apes. This study uses the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History's great ape collection to examine the prevalence of LEH, the most common type of hypo

[Parasitemia in Plasmodium falciparum malarial attacks in children].

In order to evaluate the predictive value of parasitaemia, this parameter was measured on admission in 69 Gabonese children aged from 3 to 13 years hospitalized for Plasmodium falciparum malarial attacks. Fourteen of these children had cerebral malaria, 5 had isolated convulsions and 50 had uncomplicated attacks. The parasitaemia values measured were compared with those found in asymptomatic children of the same age range carrying trophozoites. There were no significant differences in mean parasitaemia count between the 3 types of malarial attack, and only the asymptomatic carriers had signifi…

[Intestinal parasitic colonization and protein-caloric malnutrition].

Intestinal parasitic infection was determined by fecal examination for parasites with several complementary methods in 380 young Gabonese infants aged 6 to 24 months (190 with normal weights and 190 with malnutrition, matched for age). Trichuris trichiura, Ascaris lombricoides, Giardia intestinalis, Entamoeba histolytica and Strongyloides stercoralis were the most prevalent parasites, without any difference between well-fed infants and patients with malnutrition. The higher prevalence of Strongyloides stercoralis in protein energy malnutrition might be related to a methodologic problem. Howeve…

[Entomologic study of loaiasis transmission in the Lekie area (Cameroon)].

A number of cases of Loa encephalopathy have been recorded after ivermectin treatment in the Lekie Division, an area of degraded forest loca … spectively). These values are lower than those reported from similar studies in Cameroon, Congo and Gabon. Measurement of Chrysops densities does not seem to be an appropriate tool to evaluate the level of endemicity of loiasis, and to delineate the areas where there is a risk of post-ivermectin Loa encephalopathies.

Plasmodium falciparum: sickle-cell trait is associated with higher prevalence of multiple infections in Gabonese children with asymptomatic infections.

Through PCR amplifications of the gene encoding the merozoite surface antigen 2, utilizing allele-specific 3D7 and FC27 probes, we have examined the prevalence of Plasmodium falciparum in children aged from 7 to 14 years living in a village located in the equatorial forest region of Central Africa (Gabon). Using this technique, 61% (100/163) of the blood samples were shown to be infected with P. falciparum with 24 alleles distinguished by size polymorphism and sequence type. The two main families (3D7 and FC27) and hybrid alleles were detected regardless of sex and hemoglobin phenotype. No age…

Electron microscope study of the body wall and the gut of adult Loa loa.

The morphology of the body wall and the gut in the midbody region of adult male and female Loa loa originating from patients in Gabon was studied by transmission and scanning electron microscopy. The cuticle of the dorsal and ventral regions consists of ten layers. In the lateral regions the cuticle is thicker and includes two additional layers. The thin hypodermis contains numerous transhypodermal fibres. A row of median cells is situated between the syncytia in each lateral chord. No intracellular bacteria were observed. The cross-sections of each of the four muscle sectors are comprised of …

Marburg virus infection detected in a common African bat.

Marburg and Ebola viruses can cause large hemorrhagic fever (HF) outbreaks with high case fatality (80-90%) in human and great apes. Identification of the natural reservoir of these viruses is one of the most important topics in this field and a fundamental key to understanding their natural history. Despite the discovery of this virus family almost 40 years ago, the search for the natural reservoir of these lethal pathogens remains an enigma despite numerous ecological studies. Here, we report the discovery of Marburg virus in a common species of fruit bat (Rousettus aegyptiacus) in Gabon as …

Responses to Toll-like receptor ligands in children living in areas where schistosome infections are endemic.

To study the effect of repeated challenge of the innate immune system with pathogen-associated molecular patterns, cytokine responses to schistosomal lipids and bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) were analyzed in schoolchildren living in an area in Gabon where schistosomiasis, a helminth infection that is chronic in nature, is endemic. A schistosomal phosphatidylserine (PS) fraction containing the Toll-like receptor (TLR)-2 ligand lyso-PS stimulated the production of interleukin (IL)-8, IL-10, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha in children without Schistosoma haematobium infection. Lethal coalitionary attacks of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes troglodytes) on gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) in the wild.

Intraspecies violence, including lethal interactions, is a relatively common phenomenon in mammals. Contrarily, interspecies violence has mainly been investigated in the context of predation and received most research attention in carnivores. Here, we provide the first information of two lethal coalitionary attacks of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes troglodytes) on another hominid species, western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla), that occur sympatrically in the Loango National Park in Gabon. In both events, the chimpanzees significantly outnumbered the gorillas and victims were infant …

Influence of Mansonella perstans microfilaraemia on total IgE levels in Gabonese patients co-infected with Loa loa.

Mansonella (M.) perstans filariasis is widely found in Africa, including Gabon where Loa loa is also endemic. This study reports the total IgE titres according to different bioclinical forms of single or co-infection with L. loa and M. perstans in 138 patients and 20 healthy controls. The median parasite density was significantly higher in cases of loiasis. IgE titres were higher in patients with microscopic dual-infection and in the group of patients with occult loiasis plus M. perstans microfilaraemia (8425 [5292-20,679]KUI/L and 6304 [1045-10,326]KUI/L, respectively), compared to individual…

Age-related buildup of humoral immunity against epitopes for rosette formation and agglutination in African areas of malaria endemicity.

In this report, we show an age-related buildup of agglutinating activity as well as serum activity against rosette formation in children living in areas of Kenya and Gabon where malaria is endemic. Sera from Kenyans in general exhibited a stronger and wider immune response toward the epitopes, probably reflecting a difference in transmission patterns between the two areas. Thus, our results indicate that repeated malaria attacks in areas of endemicity, and consequently exposure to different isolate-specific antigens, will elicit an antibody-mediated response eventually enabling recognition of …

Nontyphoidal salmonellal septicemia in Gabonese children infected with Schistosoma intercalatum.

Relapses of enteric fever induced by Schistosoma intercalatum have been observed to occur in central Africa. In Libreville, Gabon, 70 children (ages, 2.1-15.9 years) who were seronegative for human immunodeficiency virus and were hospitalized for septicemic salmonellosis underwent rectal biopsy for diagnosis of S. intercalatum infection. A nontyphoidal Salmonella species was isolated from 53 of the 70 patients: Salmonella typhimurium in 14 cases; Salmonella enteritidis in 7 cases; Salmonella galiema in 4 cases; Salmonella arizonae in 3 cases; and other species in 25 cases. Schistosomal eggs we…
