PURPOSE: To assess the role of transabdominal ultrasound after oral administration of an echoic cellulose-based gastric contrast agent (TUS-OCCA) for detection and characterization of small gastric subepithelial masses (≤3 cm) by comparison with endosonography (EUS).

Over a 2.5-year period, 82 consecutive children complaining of recurrent abdominal pain underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. Gastroscopy confirmed pathology in 48 of the children (58.5%). A case of gastric retention caused by gallstones (Bouveret's syndrome) is reported. One of the two causal stones was lodged in the pylorus and the other in the cap of the duodenum. Preoperatively a fistula was demonstrated between the gallbladder and the pylorus. The clinical and roentgenologic findings are described. The diagnosis of Bouveret's syndrome can be established by gastroscopy.

Ninety-six patients with gastric ulcer were randomly allocated to treatment either with deglycyrrhizinised liquorice or placebo. After four weeks no differences were found between the treatment groups in the proportions with complete healing, whether assessed by gastroscopy or radiology, or in the percentage reduction in ulcer area, or in clinical improvement.
