Incarcerated Girls, Credibility, and Sexual Misconduct in Juvenile Detention Facilities.

How do correctional authorities and advocates frame girls' sexual victimization during incarceration? Drawing from 34 interviews with Prison … ictims of some sexual abuse, the "victim" label often fails to secure protection from institutional gender-based violence. Together, interviews reveal how girlhood, carcerality, and sexuality shape incarcerated girls' vulnerability to sexual violence throughout confinement.

From assumptions to outcomes: How unconscious bias shapes obstetric care.

Unconscious bias influences clinical judgment and communication across healthcare, but its effects in obstetric practice are particularly consequential due to time-sensitive decision making, high emotional vulnerability, and longstanding maternal health inequities. When bias-driven interactions escalate into coercion, non-consented procedures, or normalized mistreatment, they constitute forms of gender-based violence embedded within routine clinical care. This review synthesizes evidence on how unconscious bias shapes provider-patient communication, shared decision making, autonomy, and obstet…

The Use of Partial Least Squares-Path Modelling to Understand the Impact of Ambivalent Sexism on Violence-Justification among Adolescents.

Gender violence is generally conceived as a phenomenon concerning only adults. Nonetheless, it is also perpetrated within teenagers' relationships, as many empirical studies have shown. We therefore have focused our attention on a non-probabilistic sample consisting of 400 adolescents living in Naples (Italy), to study the association between sexism and the justification of violent attitudes. Generally, sexism is recognised as a discriminatory attitude towards people, based on their biological sex. However, it is conventional to talk about sexism as a prejudice against women. The Ambivalent Se

Typology of reactions to intimate partner violence among men and women arrested for partner violence.

This study examined behavioral and emotional responses to partner-initiated violence reported by men and women court-ordered to domestic violence counseling. Respondents provided Likert-type ratings of behavioral and emotional responses to their partners' initiated violence. Cluster analysis to determine heterogeneity of emotional and behavioral responses resulted in a three-cluster solution. The profile for Cluster 1, predominantly male, showed no specific behavioral or emotional reaction pattern. Cluster 2 respondents, evenly split between males and females, but comprising a high proportion

Finding the way out: a non-dichotomous understanding of violence and depression resilience of adolescents who are exposed to family violence.

OBJECTIVE: In this cross-sectional study on family violence and resilience in a random sample of 5,149 middle school students with a mean age of 14.5 years from four EU-countries (Austria, Germany, Slovenia, and Spain) we examined the prevalence of exposure to family violence, and we worked from the premise that adolescent can be resilient to family violence. We expanded the definition of resilience to include the absence of both physical aggression and depression symptoms in adolescents who have been exposed to violence in their families and extended our understanding of resilience to include

"No Woman Belongs to Politics": Gender-Based Hate Speech Against Female Politicians in Czech Antiestablishment Groups on Facebook.

This article introduces a mixed-method framework for analyzing online gender-based violence. It combines automated analysis with qualitative investigation of periods of intensified hostility, providing a deeper understanding of the triggers, dynamics, and broader context of hostile communication. The framework is demonstrated through an analysis of content published in 17 Czech Facebook antiestablishment groups, drawing on a dataset of 1.94 million comments and 154 thousand posts. The empirical findings provide further evidence that female politicians are disproportionately targeted by gender-…

Comprehensive sexuality education and adjacent prevention strategies for adolescent sexual violence: a scoping review of consent, empowerment and bystander action.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent sexual violence is a persistent public-health, educational, and human-rights problem. Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) is frequently proposed as a primary prevention approach, but evidence relevant to sexual violence is distributed across CSE, consent and respectful-relationships education, gender-transformative programming, empowerment, bystander intervention, and whole-school safeguarding. This scoping review mapped how CSE and explicitly related prevention strategies address adolescent sexual violence, which mechanisms and outcomes they emphasize and where ev

Women's mental health: acute impact of COVID-19 pandemic on domestic violence.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic created a situation of general distress. Although the focus has been initially more on the physical health during the pandemic, mental health concerns linked to the lockdown have quickly risen. This study aims to assess the effect of the COVID-19-related lockdown on Tunisian women's mental health and gender-based violence. An online survey was conducted, using the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scales (DASS-21) and the Facebook Bergen Addiction Scale (FBAS). We chose a female-exclusive social group on Facebook and used the snowball sampling metho…

Prevalence of physical violence against children in Haiti: A national population-based cross-sectional survey.

Although physical violence against children is common worldwide, there are no national estimates in Haiti. To establish baseline national estimates, a three-stage clustered sampling design was utilized to administer a population-based household survey about victimization due to physical violence to 13-24 year old Haitians (n=2,916), including those residing in camps or settlements. Descriptive statistics and weighted analysis techniques were used to estimate national lifetime prevalence and characteristics of physical violence against children. About two-thirds of respondents reported having e

Association of exposure to intimate-partner physical violence and potentially traumatic war-related events with mental health in Liberia.

Liberia's wars between 1989 and 2003 resulted in hundreds of thousands of casualties and millions of victims. Gender-based violence was widespread during the conflict. Since the end of the war, however, little attention has been paid to ongoing violence against women, especially within the household. This research examines the relationships between intimate-partner physical violence, war experiences, and mental health nearly ten years after the end of the war. The study is based on a nationwide cross-sectional, multistage stratified cluster random survey of 4501 adults using structured intervi…

Girls and women speak out from Afghan moral prisons: Tackling extremism and violence against women in a conflict environment.

ABSTRACTThis empirical research documented voices of women and girls in female shelters and prisons in Samangan, Laghman and Wardak provinces who experienced systematic sexual and gender based violence before and after they escaped forced marriages, forced virginity tests, physical and sexual violence. Women who challenged the status quo, fundamentalism and extremism faced imprisonment for up to five years. The research interviewed primary, secondary and territory health care professionals, who carried out or witnessed invasive virginity tests. The evidence suggests that women are being depriv

One-year follow-up of a coach-delivered dating violence prevention program: a cluster randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Perpetration of physical, sexual, and psychological abuse is prevalent in adolescent relationships. One strategy for reducing such violence is to increase the likelihood that youth will intervene when they see peers engaging in disrespectful and abusive behaviors. DESIGN: This cluster RCT was conducted from 2009 to 2011. The unit of randomization was the school, and the unit of analysis was th
