BACKGROUND: Uniconazole is an effective plant growth regulator that can be used in banana cultivation to promote dwarfing and enhance lodging resistance. However, the mechanisms underlying banana dwarfing induced by uniconazole are unknown. In uniconazole-treated bananas, gibberellin (GA) was downregulated compared to the control groups. An integrative analysis of transcriptomes and metabolomes was performed on dwarf bananas induced by uniconazole and control groups. The key pathways involved in uniconazole-induced dwarfism in banana were determined according to the overlap of KEGG annotation

Methyl salicylate (MeSA), which is synthesized in plants from salicylic acid (SA) by methyltransferases, has roles in defense against microbial and insect pests. Most of the MeSA that accumulates after pathogen attack is synthesized by benzoic acid/SA carboxyl methyltransferase 1 (AtBSMT1). To investigate the role of AtBSMT1 in plant defense, transgenic Arabidopsis with altered AtBSMT1 function or expression were assessed for their ability to resist pathogen infection. A knockout mutant (Atbsmt1) failed to accumulate MeSA following pathogen infection; these plants also failed to accumulate SA

Walnut (Juglans regia) is an economically significant woody oil tree species widely cultivated in China. However, its production is increasingly threatened by extreme low-temperature events, such as unseasonal frosts and late-spring cold. Salicylic acid (SA) is a key phytohormone known to enhance cold tolerance in plants, yet its underlying mechanism in walnut remains unclear. In this study, we present the first integrated analysis combining physiological measurements, transcriptomics, and metabolomics to investigate how exogenous SA improves cold tolerance in walnut leaves. Our results showed

Systemic acquired resistance is a widespread phenomenon in the plant kingdom that confers heightened and often enduring immunity to a range of diverse pathogens. Systemic immunity develops through activation of plant disease resistance protein signaling networks following local infection with an incompatible pathogen. The accumulation of the phytohormone salicylic acid in systemically responding tissues occurs within days after a local immunizing infection and is essential for systemic resistance. However, our knowledge of the signaling components underpinning signal perception and the establi

Jasmonic acid (JA) and ethylene (ET) are known to play important roles in mediating plant defense against herbivores, but how they affect development in herbivore-attacked plants is unknown. We used JA-deficient (silenced in LIPOXYGENASE3 [asLOX3]) and ET-insensitive (expressing a mutated dominant negative form of ETHYLENE RESPONSE1 [mETR1]) Nicotiana attenuata plants, and their genetic cross (mETR1asLOX3), to examine growth and development of these plants under simulated herbivory conditions. At the whole plant level, both hormones suppressed leaf expansion after the plants had been wounded a

N6-methyladenosine (m6A) is one of the most abundant internal modifications of mRNA, which plays important roles in gene expression regulation, and plant growth and development. Vir-like m6A methyltransferase associated (VIRMA) serves as a scaffold for bridging the catalytic core components of the m6A methyltransferase complex. The role of VIRMA in regulating leaf development and its related mechanisms have not been reported. Here, we identified and characterized two upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) VIRMA genes, named as GhVIR-A and GhVIR-D, which share 98.5% identity with each other. GhVIR-

Soil cadmium (Cd) contamination threatens crop productivity and food safety. Chitinase genes (Chit) are well characterized for their roles in plant defense against biotic stresses, but their functions in Cd stress responses remain elusive. Here, we functionally characterize HvChit38, a novel Cd-induced Class I chitinase gene from a Cd-tolerant barley genotype. Chit38 sequences are highly conserved during green plant evolution, with a likely origin from streptophyte algae. HvChit38 overexpression significantly improves plant growth and yield and substantially reduces Cd concentrations in roots,

BACKGROUND: YABBY genes play important roles in the growth and polar establishment of lateral organs such as leaves and floral organs in angiosperms. However, the functions of YABBY homologous genes are largely unknown in soybean.
RESULTS: In this study, we identified GmFILa encoding a YABBY transcription factor belonging to FIL subfamily. In situ mRNA hybridization analysis indicated that GmFILa had specific expression patterns in leaf as well as in flower bud primordia. Ectopic expression of GmFILa in Arabidopsis thaliana altered the partial abaxialization of the adaxial epidermises of leav

Expansins are cell wall loosening proteins, which are encoded by multigene families. However, the physiological role of most expansin genes is still poorly understood. Here, we functionally characterized an Al-inducible expansin gene, OsEXPA10, which is regulated by a C2H2-type zinc-finger transcription factor, ART1 in rice. A detailed expression analysis showed that OsEXPA10 was expressed in both the roots and shoots at a similar level, but only the expression in the roots was rapidly upregulated in response to Al. Furthermore, spatial expression analysis showed that the Al-induced expression

The SHOOTMERISTEMLESS (STM) gene family controls shoot apical meristem homeostasis and participates in plant development and abiotic stress adaptation in higher plants. While the conserved roles of STM in maintaining meristem stability are well documented, the functions and regulatory mechanisms of BrSTM genes in Brassica rapa cold tolerance remain elusive, hindering our understanding of stress mediated meristem plasticity. Here, we systematically characterized the Brassica rapa STM gene family and identified 31 BrSTM members, all harboring the conserved KNOXⅠ domain and belonging to the class

Auxin-related gene families potentially interact with PpyFUL and play a crucial role in regulating reproductive organ development in pear. The Rosaceae family is a major angiosperm lineage, yet the molecular basis of reproductive organ development and fruit-type diversification remains poorly characterized. Here, we conducted a comparative genomic analysis of gene family expansion and contraction throughout 12 representative Rosaceae species. Gene families associated with auxin-related biological processes were enriched among convergently expanded families in pear, strawberry, and raspberry, b

Brassinosteroids (BRs) are plant steroidal hormones that are crucial for plant growth and development, with dwarfism being a hallmark of BR deficiency. DWARF4 (DWF4) is a key enzyme that catalyzes the rate-limiting C22 oxidation step in the BR biosynthetic pathway. Understanding its role in ornamental plants is crucial for developing dwarf varieties that can significantly enhance their aesthetics and broaden their applications. This study aimed to provide the functional analysis of the DWF4 gene isolated from Echinacea purpurea. We found that the EpDWF4 gene comprised a 1458 bp open reading fr

Although polyploid plants have larger leaves than their diploid counterparts, the molecular mechanisms underlying this difference (or trait) remain elusive. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between triploid and full-sib diploid poplar trees were identified from two transcriptomic data sets followed by a gene association study among DEGs to identify key leaf growth regulators. Yeast one-hybrid system, electrophoretic mobility shift assay, and dual-luciferase assay were employed to substantiate that PpnGRF5-1 directly regulated PpnCKX1. The interactions between PpnGRF5-1 and growth-regulati

Polyploidy is prevalent in nature. As the fate of duplicated genes becomes more complicated when the encoded proteins function as oligomers, functional investigations into duplicated oligomer-encoding genes in polyploid genomes will facilitate our understanding of how traits are expressed. In this study, we identified GmCHLI1, a gene encoding the I subunit of magnesium (Mg)-chelatase, which functions in hexamers as responsible for the semi-dominant etiolation phenotype in soybean. Four GmCHLI copies derived from two polyploidy events were identified in the soybean genome. Further investigation

The etiolation process, which occurs after germination, is terminated once light is perceived and then de-etiolation commences. During the de-etiolation period, monochromatic lights (blue, red and far-red) induce differences in gene expression profiles and plant behavior through their respective photoreceptors. ELONGATED HYPOCOTYL 5 (HY5), a bZIP-type transcription factor (TF), regulates gene expression in the de-etiolation process, and other bZIP TFs are also involved in this regulation. However, transcriptomic changes that occur in etiolated seedlings upon monochromatic light irradiation and

Cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) are nonessential and toxic elements in rice that often occur together in contaminated paddy field soils. To understand whether rice has a common molecular response mechanism against Cd and As toxicity, 30-day seedlings (Oryza sativa L. indica) were exposed separately to Cd and As3+ in hydroponic cultures for up to 7 days. Root transcriptomic analysis of plants exposed to Cd and As for 3 days revealed that a total of 2224 genes in rice roots responded to Cd stress, while 1503 genes responded to As stress. Of these, 841 genes responded to both stressors. The genes i

Endophytes are mutualistic symbionts within healthy plant tissues. In this study we isolated Bacillus spp. from seeds of several varieties of maize. Bacillus amyloliquifaciens or Bacillus subtilis were found to be present in all maize varieties examined in this study. To determine whether bacteria may produce antifungal compounds, generally lipopeptides in Bacillus spp., bacterial cultures were screened for production of lipopeptides. Lipopeptides were extracted by acid precipitation from liquid cultures of Bacillus spp. Lipopeptide extracts from Bacillus spp. isolated from Indian popcorn and

The root hemiparasite witchweed (Striga spp.) is a devastating agricultural pest that causes losses of up to $1 billion US annually in sub-Saharan Africa. Development of resistant crops is one of the cost-effective ways to address this problem. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying resistance are not well understood. To understand molecular events upon Striga spp. infection, we conducted genome-scale RNA sequencing expression analysis using Striga hermonthica-infected rice (Oryza sativa) roots. We found that transcripts grouped under the Gene Ontology term defense response were signific

BACKGROUND: Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.), an annual herb of the Asteraceae family, possesses dried tubular florets that are commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine to promote blood circulation and remove blood stasis. Flavonoids are the main active constituents of safflower, yet their regulatory mechanisms remain largely unclear. While MYB transcription factors have been widely reported to participate in regulating flavonoid biosynthesis, few transcription factors that regulate this pathway have been functionally characterized in safflower.
RESULTS: Based on safflower transcripto

BACKGROUND: Oat (Avena sativa L.) is an important grain and feed crop, playing a significant role in agricultural production. However, lodging remains a key factor limiting oat yield and quality. Recent advances in molecular biology have shed light on the mechanisms of oat lodging resistance, particularly highlighting the critical role of lignin and cellulose content in stem strength. Nevertheless, the molecular regulatory networks governing lignin and cellulose biosynthesis in the basal second internode remain poorly understood.
RESULTS: In this study, we conducted a comprehensive analysis o
