Some observations on the dentition of an isolated group in northeast Poland.

Clinical examination of the teeth and the mouth was carried out on a group of 133 "Old Believers," 54 males and 79 females, and a control group of 138 Poles living in the same area of Augostova in northeast Poland, 63 males and 75 females. Studying the frequency of Carabelli's cusp, shovel-shaped incisors, missing teeth, microdonita, supernumerary teeth, and torus palatinus in both groups, it was found that Carabelli's cusp and torus palatinus are more frequent among Poles. Such differences could be attributed to differences in ethnic origin of the two groups.

Genetic inheritance of susceptibility to tinea imbricata.

Segregation analysis on 228 family pedigrees collected from a Papua New Guinean population provided data that strongly supported a previous report of an autosomal recessive pattern of inheritance of a susceptibility to tinea imbricata. The frequency of the susceptibility gene within the population studied was found to be 0.49 +/- 0.04, calculated on the assumption of an autosomal recessive mode of inheritance. However, in spite of the strong evidence in support of autosomal recessive inheritance, the possibility of autosomal dominant inheritance with reduced penetrance cannot be excluded.

The Signal of Admixture Can Decay Rapidly When Using Clustering-Based Methods.

Gene flow shapes evolutionary trajectories by introducing novel alleles, facilitating or retarding adaptation or eroding divergence among populations. Studies commonly infer gene flow through estimates of genetic admixture from methods that cluster individuals by allele-frequency similarity. However, the ability of these methods to reliably detect historical admixture remains poorly understood, particularly under spatially restricted dispersal and across a range of migration rates. Here, we evaluate how signals of admixture arise and decay during and after gene flow across a range of within- a

Susceptibility to lung tuberculosis--a population-genetic study.

The aim of this study was to compare the genetic structure of lung tuberculosis (LTB) patients (Pts) to healthy controls i.e. to evaluate dependency of LTB occurrence and course of the disease in regard to subject's genetic constitution. The study group consisted of 100 LTB Pts, while the same number of healthy non-sibling individuals served as controls. The groups were analyzed with respect to homozygous recessive characteristics (HRC) that served as genetic markers, which were studied in each subject. Twenty-three HRCs were chosen according to HRC-test rules. The results show significant dif

Coat variants in cats. Gametic disequilibrium between unlinked loci.

Examination of the extent and pattern of gametic disequilibrium between nine pairs of unlinked loci in four large samples of cats revealed large and consistent values. These observations appear inconsistent with either genetic drift or gene flow as causes of the disequilibrium. On the other hand, the extent of epistatic selection necessary to generate the majority of these values appears reasonable.

A genetic study of subacute and chronic spinal muscular atrophy in childhood. A nosological analysis of 124 index patients.

A genetic study of the subacute spinal muscular atrophies (SMA) of late infancy and early childhood has been undertaken. All such patients with chronic disease (with ages at onset up to 14 years, and excluding SMA Type I) known to 2 large Neurological Centres were reassessed clinically and genetically. There were 124 index patients (67 females and 57 males) and 17 secondary cases, which formed two consecutive unselected series. To investigate the genetic composition of this group, 4 nosological approaches were used; cluster analysis of clinical features of the disease, Haldane's sib-sib analys

The HLA system and leprosy in Thailand.

To investigate immunogenetics of leprosy, 205 leprosy patients (26 with tuberculoid, 57 with borderline-tuberculoid, 21 with borderline, 31 with borderline-lepromatous, and 70 with lepromatous leprosy) have been typed for HLA antigens, and compared with 183 healthy controls from the same region (Northern Thailand). There was no significant difference between the overall group of leprosy patients or the three borderline classes and the controls. The two polar forms, tuberculoid and lepromatous leprosy, however, showed significant associations: HLA-A2 is decreased and HLA-Bw17 is increased in tu

Deficiency in homozygous haplotypes reveals recessive lethal variants affecting fertility and viability in the Friesian horse.

BACKGROUND: Recessive lethal alleles causing pre- or postnatal death in homozygous mutant animals, could lead to reduced fertility success. The Friesian horse breed has signs of reduced fertility and has faced high inbreeding rates in the past (∆F > 1%). Consequently, by genetic drift lethal alleles may have reached moderate to high frequencies in the population. Our aim was to identify lethal recessive alleles that — when homozygous — may cause pre- or postnatal death in the Friesian horse. RESULTS: We analyzed genotypes (70 K SNP) of over 8,000 Friesian horses, looking for haplotypes with a

Gene flow, subspecies composition, and dengue virus-2 susceptibility among Aedes aegypti collections in Senegal.

BACKGROUND: Aedes aegypti, the "yellow fever mosquito", is the primary vector to humans of the four serotypes of dengue viruses (DENV1-4) and yellow fever virus (YFV) and is a known vector of Chikungunya virus. There are two recognized subspecies of Ae. aegypti sensu latu (s.l.): the presumed ancestral form, Ae. aegypti formosus (Aaf), a primarily sylvan mosquito in sub-Saharan Africa, and Ae. aegypti aegypti (Aaa), found globally in tropical and subtropical regions typically in association with humans. The designation of Ae. aegypti s.l. subspecies arose from observations made in East Africa

Whole-exome sequencing identified recurrent and novel variants in benzene-induced leukemia.

BACKGROUND: Genome-wide sequencing may extensively identify potential pathogenic variants, which helps to understand mechanisms of tumorigenesis, but such study has not been reported in benzene-induced leukemia (BIL). METHODS: We recruited 10 BIL patients and conducted the whole-exome sequencing on their peripheral blood samples. The obtained sequencing data were screened for potential pathogenic and novel variants, then the variants-located genes were clustered to identify cancer-related pathways. Shared or recurrent variants among the BIL cases were also identified and evaluated for their p

A posteriori parameters from paternity tests of a Mexican laboratory with the powerplex fusion system.

Population studies regarding Human identification (HID) systems report a priori forensic parameters, but rarely they describe a posteriori parameters from concluded paternity tests. We analyzed data from the PowerPlex® Fusion System in 1503 paternity tests from a Mexican laboratory for five years (2016-2020). The motherless duo paternity tests (89.8%) were more frequent than the standard trio tests (10.2%). A notable increase in motherless tests was noted regarding our previous report (89.8% vs 77.3%), probably explained by the COVID-19 pandemic. The estimated exclusion frequency in Mexico ran

The diagnostic yield of exome sequencing in liver diseases from a curated gene panel.

Exome sequencing (ES) has been used in a variety of clinical settings but there are limited data on its utility for diagnosis and/or prediction of monogenic liver diseases. We developed a curated list of 502 genes for monogenic disorders associated with liver phenotypes and analyzed ES data for these genes in 758 patients with chronic liver diseases (CLD). For comparison, we examined ES data in 7856 self-declared healthy controls (HC), and 2187 patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Candidate pathogenic (P) or likely pathogenic (LP) variants were initially identified in 19.9% of participa

DNA-pools targeted-sequencing as a robust cost-effective method to detect rare variants: Application to dilated cardiomyopathy genetic diagnosis.

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a heart disease characterized by left ventricular dilatation and systolic dysfunction. In 30% of cases, pathogenic variants, essentially private to each patient, are identified in at least one of almost 50 reported genes. Thus, while costly, exons capture-based Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) of a targeted gene panel appears as the best strategy to genetically diagnose DCM. Here, we report a NGS strategy applied to pools of 8 DNAs from DCM patients and validate its robustness for rare variants detection at 4-fold reduced cost. Our pipeline uses Freebayes to det

Influence of killer immunoglobulin-like receptors genes on the recurrence rate of ocular toxoplasmosis in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Recurrence is a hallmark of ocular toxoplasmosis (OT), and conditions that influence its occurrence remain a challenge. Natural killer cells (NK) are effectors cells whose primary is cytotoxic function against many parasites, including Toxoplasma gondii. Among the NK cell receptors, immunoglobulin-like receptors (KIR) deserve attention due to their high polymorphism. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to analyse the influence of KIR gene polymorphism in the course of OT infection and its association with recurrences after an active episode. METHODS: Ninety-six patients from the Ophthal

Genetic landscape of human neutrophil antigen variants in India from population-scale genomes.

Antibodies against human neutrophil antigens (HNAs) play a significant role in various clinical conditions such as neonatal alloimmune neutropenia, transfusion-related acute lung injury, and other nonhemolytic transfusion reactions. This study aims to identify the genotype and allele frequencies of HNAs in the healthy Indian population. Ten genetic variants in four human genes encoding alleles of HNAs class I-V approved by the International Society of Blood Transfusion-Granulocyte Immunobiology Working Party were used in the analysis. Genetic variants from whole genome sequences of 1029 health
