Mapping reservoirs of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) across food value chains and their environmental dissemination pathways is essential for limiting the spread and impact of AMR. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of AMR genes and bacteria in sidestream materials, waste discharges, and processing environments of salmon and broiler. A targeted hybrid capture-based sequencing approach was used to characterize the resistome in samples collected from four processing plants, revealing a diverse range of AMR genes. Among these, we found several high-risk AMR genes, including t

Resistance to antibiotics have created havoc around the globe due to the emergence of multi-drug resistant (MDR) pathogenic bacterial strains. To decipher this problem, a detailed understanding of the antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes and their resistant mechanisms are obligatory. The present study is mainly focused on an opportunistic, nosocomial bacterial strain Enterococcus faecalis V583, which possess acquired exogenous AMR genes portraying resistance against Chloramphenicol, Tetracycline, Vancomycin, Linezolid, Ampicillin and other antibiotics. An interaction network of eight AMR genes

BACKGROUND: Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the surge in hospital admissions and widespread use of broad-spectrum antibiotics have heightened the risk of hospital-acquired infections from multidrug-resistant (MDR) organisms, particularly Escherichia coli. It is imperative to implement stringent measures to curb the spread of antimicrobial resistance in hospitals and devise robust treatment strategies for patients grappling with such infections. To confront this challenge, a comprehensive study was undertaken to examine MDR extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (MDR-ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli isol

Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium is becoming a leading cause of gastroenteritis and mortality. The use of antibiotics has increased natural resistance of S. Typhimurium to antibiotics. This study aims to isolate and characterize multi-drug-resistant (MDR) Salmonella strains from hospital sewage samples in Bhopal City, central India. The MDR isolates were characterized by molecular identification, antimicrobial resistance patterns, multi-locus sequence typing, and efflux pump activity. Specific genes (hilA, stn, invA, typh, and iroB) were used to confirm S. Typhimurium isolates. The Kirb

BACKGROUND: Recent worldwide reports of increased numbers of multidrug-resistant (MDR) Proteus mirabilis (P. mirabilis) isolates, particularly those producing extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs), are alarming. P. mirabilis is a common causative agent of complicated urinary tract infections (UTIs), particularly in patients with long-term urinary catheterization. This study aimed to assess the prevalence, antibiotic resistance patterns, and determinants of P. mirabilis among catheter-associated UTIs (CAUTI) and non-catheter-associated UTIs (non-CAUTI).
METHODS: One hundred and three Proteus

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Houseflies (Musca domestica) are recognized mechanical vectors of foodborne pathogens and antimicrobial-resistant bacteria, particularly in environments with intensive food-handling. Their role in disseminating virulent and multidrug-resistant (MDR) Escherichia coli at the food-environment-human interface remains underexplored in Northern Thailand. This study aimed to determine the prevalence, phylogenetic distribution, virulence gene carriage, antimicrobial resistance profiles, and resistance determinants of E. coli isolated from houseflies collected at food markets in Pha

Extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli in food-producing animals represents a priority public health concern because of its capacity for zoonotic transmission through the food chain and frequent co-carriage of multidrug resistance (MDR) determinants. Surveillance in sub-Saharan Africa remains disproportionately limited, and no published data characterize ESBL prevalence or resistance gene profiles in slaughter animals in Malawi. This study investigated the prevalence of E. coli harboring ESBL-associated resistance genes (blaCTX-M, blaSHV) and characterized antimicro

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Multidrug-resistant (MDR) Enterobacteriaceae are an emerging and a major concern for the medical community. Reported rates of MDR Enterobacteriaceae are increasing, and infections with these organisms are no longer limited to those associated with healthcare in the severely ill or infirm. Community-acquired infections are now described. The purpose of this review is to provide the readers with an up to date picture of MDR Enterobacteriaceae and to highlight the infection prevention practices that will impede the spread of this public health threat.
RECENT FINDINGS: The epid

Fluoroquinolone resistance is a major challenge in treating Multidrug-Resistant Tuberculosis globally. The GenoType MTBDRsl Ver 2.0, endorsed by the WHO, was used to characterize fluoroquinolone resistance. The fluoroquinolone resistance rates in the MDR-TB, Rifampicin-Resistant TB, and non-MDR-TB were 33%, 16.5%, and 5.4%, respectively. The most common mutation found in fluoroquinolone-resistant isolates was D94G (49.5%) in the gyrA gene. Of the 150 MDR-TB isolates, the prevalence of Extensively Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis and pre-XDR-TB was 1.33% and 30%, respectively. Among the 139 RR-TB is

BACKGROUND: Multidrug-resistant (MDR) Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a frequent opportunistic pathogen that causes significant mortality in patients with non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis (NCFB). Although the quorum sensing (QS) system is a potential target for treatment, lasR mutants that present with a QS-deficient phenotype have been frequently reported among clinical P. aeruginosa isolates. We aimed to investigate whether antibiotic resistance would select for lasR mutants during chronic P. aeruginosa lung infection and determine the mechanism underlying the phenomenon.
METHODS: We prospectiv

Multidrug resistance (MDR) transporters are capable of secreting structurally and functionally unrelated toxic compounds from the cell. Among this group are ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters. These membrane proteins are typically arranged as either hetero- or homo-dimers of ABC half-transporters with each subunit consisting of a membrane domain fused at the C-terminus to an ATP-binding domain, or as full transporters in which the two subunits are fused into a single polypeptide. The saci_2123 gene of the thermoacidophilic archaeon Sulfolobus acidocaldarius is the only gene in the genome

Multidrug-resistant (MDR) Klebsiella pneumoniae is challenging to treat with conventional antibiotic regimens, posing a threat to healthcare systems. Phage therapy presents a promising alternative treatment strategy; however, characterization of its efficacy and safety is required. Here, we describe the microbiological and molecular characterization of a novel bacteriophage with activity against MDR K. pneumoniae using a greater wax moth (Galleria mellonella) model system. A bacteriophage was isolated from hospital wastewater. Viral kinetics and phage stability were evaluated under varied pH a

BACKGROUND: Typhoid fever is a serious infection that primarily affects humans, with approximately 20 million cases reported each year, mostly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Continuous monitoring of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi (S. Typhi) in these endemic areas is crucial for tracking trends in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and developing effective control measures. This study focused on S. Typhi isolates from children aged ≤ 16 years who showed symptoms of fever in Mukuru and Kibera informal settlements in Nairobi County, Kenya. METHODS: Blood samples for culture were coll

Background: Psoriasis is a common immune-mediated hyperproliferative skin dysfunction with known genetic predisposition. Gene-gene interaction (e.g., between HLA-C and ERAP1) in the psoriasis context has been reported in various populations. As ERAP1 has been recognized as a psoriasis susceptibility gene and plays a critical role in antigen presentation, we performed this study to identify interactions between ERAP1 and other psoriasis susceptibility gene variants. Methods: We validated psoriasis susceptibility gene variants in an independent cohort of 5,414 patients with psoriasis and 5,556 c

UNLABELLED: Salmonella enterica serovar Infantis has emerged as a globally disseminated multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogen, largely driven by the spread of the plasmid of emerging Salmonella Infantis (pESI)-like megaplasmid. In our study, we investigated the prevalence, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) phenotypes, and genomic features of S. Infantis isolates collected from poultry farms in Lebanon. A total of 72 isolates were recovered during a nationwide surveillance effort, among which 67 (93%) were MDR based on antimicrobial susceptibility testing (disk diffusion and broth microdilution) resu
