The social cognitive dimension of pantomime.

Pantomime production is commonly interpreted as reflecting tool-use-related cognitive processes. Yet, in everyday life, pantomime deserves a communication function and the exaggeration of amplitude found during pantomime compared to real tool use may reflect the individual's attempt to communicate the intended gesture. Therefore, the question arises about whether pantomime is a communicative behavior that is nevertheless supported only by non-social cognitive processes. We contribute to answering this question by using kinematic analyses. Participants performed the pantomime of using a saw or

Wearable IMU for Shoulder Injury Prevention in Overhead Sports.

Body-worn inertial sensors have enabled motion capture outside of the laboratory setting. In this work, an inertial measurement unit was attached to the upper arm to track and discriminate between shoulder motion gestures in order to help prevent shoulder over-use injuries in athletics through real-time preventative feedback. We present a detection and classification approach that can be used to count the number of times certain motion gestures occur. The application presented involves tracking baseball throws and volleyball serves, which are common overhead movements that can lead to shoulder…

Increased premotor cortex activation in high functioning autism during action observation.

The mirror neuron (MN) hypothesis of autism has received considerable attention, but to date has produced inconsistent findings. Using functional MRI, participants with high functioning autism or Asperger's syndrome were compared to typically developing individuals (n=12 in each group). Participants passively observed hand gestures that included waving, pointing, and grasping. Concerning the MN network, both groups activated similar regions including prefrontal, inferior parietal and superior temporal regions, with the autism group demonstrating significantly greater activation in the dorsal p…

It's all in the mime: Actions speak louder than words when teaching the cranial nerves.

Cranial nerve (CN) knowledge is essential for students in health professions. Gestures and body movements (e.g., mime) have been shown to improve cognition and satisfaction with anatomy teaching. The aim of this pilot study was to compare the effectiveness of didactic lecturing with that of miming lecturing for student learning of the CNs. The research design involved exposure of the same group of students to didactic followed by miming lecturing of CNs. The effectiveness of each lecturing strategy was measured via pre- and post-testing. Student perceptions of these strategies were measured by…

Facial expressiveness in patients with schizophrenia compared to depressed patients and nonpatient comparison subjects.

OBJECTIVE: Blunted affect is a major symptom in schizophrenia, and affective deficits clinically encompass deficits in expressiveness. Emotion research and ethological studies have shown that patients with schizophrenia are impaired in various modalities of expressiveness (posed and spontaneous emotion expressions, coverbal gestures, and smiles). Similar deficits have been described in depression, but comparative studies have brought mixed results. Our aim was to study and compare facial expressive behaviors related to affective deficits in patients with schizophrenia, depressed patients, and …

Influence of ageing and educational level on the prevalence of body-part-as-objects in normal subjects.

When pantomiming gestures to verbal command, the overall production of body-part-as-object (BPO) errors is differentially affected by age and educational level in normal subjects. The higher overall frequency of BPO with age may be related to difficulties in the inhibition of the automatic activation of tool emblems (i.e., the BPO) instead of the appropriate hand posture to hold the tool. However, all subjects are equally able to correct errors in BPO on subsequent trials, which suggests the integrity of these gestural representations. In a clinical perspective, BPO data have therefore to be c…

A vision-based sign language recognition & voice conversion system for inclusive communication.

Major communication barriers are often encountered among deaf and/or speech-impaired people, which is particularly serious during emergencies. This study proposes a novel vision-based sign-to-voice conversion that recognizes hand gestures through a convolutional neural network incorporated with advanced preprocessing and transformer-based classification. A custom gesture dataset was created by capturing labeled images and video frames under different backgrounds, lighting conditions, and hand orientations for proper training. Skin filtering, background subtraction, noise removal, and extractio…

Communication modality sampling for a toddler with Angelman syndrome.

PURPOSE: Vocal, gestural, and graphic communication modes were implemented concurrently with a toddler with Angelman syndrome to identify the most efficiently learned communication mode to emphasize in an initial augmentative communication system. METHOD: Symbols representing preferred objects were introduced in vocal, gestural, and graphic communication modes using an alternating treatment single-subject experimental design. Conventionally accepted prompting strategies were used to teach symbols in each communication mode. Because the learner did not vocally imitate, vocal mode intervention

A Muscle Fiber-Based Soft Hand Exoskeleton Control Strategy for Fine Manipulation: A Preliminary Investigation.

While soft hand exoskeleton robots have approached human-level dexterity in terms of degrees of freedom, precise control methods for fine mo … ion in rehabilitation applications remain limited. In the experiments, a dataset containing 21 hand gestures based on muscle ultrasound images was constructed to evaluate the proposed method. All data were collected from healthy participants as a preliminary proof-of-concept investigation. The results show that the proposed approach achieves an average rec …

An early force prediction control scheme using multimodal sensing of electromyography and digit force signals.

Different grasping gestures result in the change of muscular activity of the forearm muscles. Similarly, the muscular activity changes with a change in grip force while grasping the object. This change in muscular activity, measured by a technique called Electromyography (EMG) is used in the upper limb bionic devices to select the grasping gesture. Previous research studies have shown gesture classification using pattern recognition control schemes. However, the use of EMG signals for force manipulation is less focused, especially during precision grasping. In this study, an early predictive c…

Severity of neglect predicts accuracy of imitation in patients with right hemisphere lesions.

Goldenberg [Goldenberg, G. (1996). Defective imitation of gestures in patients with damage in the left or right hemisphere. Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Psychiatry, 61, 176-180] proposed that the vulnerability of the imitation of meaningless gestures to right or left brain damage depends on the body parts that are involved in the gestures. Whereas imitation of hand postures was disturbed only in patients with left brain damage, imitation of finger postures was affected to similar degrees in left and right brain damage. Subsequent studies confirmed the selective vulnerability of hand…

Multistable syllables as enacted percepts: a source of an asymmetric bias in the verbal transformation effect.

Perceptual changes are experienced during rapid and continuous repetition of a speech form, leading to an auditory illusion known as the ver … nsformations. The first experiment displayed variations in timing relations between two consonantal gestures embedded in various nonsense syllables in a repetitive speech production task. In the second experiment, French participants repeatedly uttered these syllables while searching for verbal transformation. Syllable transformation frequencies followed t …

Extended Reality (XR) and Large Language Models (LLMs) can support context-aware, hands-free information access in industrial environments. This paper presents LlymX, a prototype combining a Unity-based 3D environment with an LLM-driven backend leveraging retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and vector databases. LlymX introduces an interaction-oriented XR-LLM pipeline in which spatial user actions, such as gestures and object selection, are grounded in semantic object representations and linked to retrieval from a structured knowledge base. Through speech, gestures, and text, users can identi…

A model-based approach to limb apraxia in Alzheimer's disease.

Limb apraxia is a neurological deficit characterized by an inability to pantomime and/or imitate gestures, which can result from neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease (AD). The major goal of the study was to describe comprehensively the apraxia deficits observed in AD patients and to relate those deficits to general cognitive status, measures of daily activity, and other neuropsychological measures. Limb apraxia was assessed on a variety of conceptual and gesture production tasks in 30 AD patients. As a group, AD patients were impaired across gesture production tasks: of note…

Category specificity in object agnosia: preservation of sensorimotor experiences related to objects.

We report a case of semantic agnosia, characterized by category specificity. Object recognition, mainly involving visual representation, was severely impaired, whereas object recognition involving both visual and sensorimotor representations, was relatively well preserved. His ability to recognize gestures and produce appropriate gestural responses to objects was remarkable. These two factors lead the authors to form a hypothesis, in an attempt to explain the mechanisms involved in object recognition. It has been argued that manipulation of an object may give access to a certain amount of know…

Ideational action impairments in Alzheimer's disease.

We report data from a group of patients with mild Alzheimer's disease on a range of tasks requiring either stored semantic knowledge about objects (e.g., naming object use) or the execution of action to objects (e.g., miming and using objects). We found that the patients were impaired at miming in response to objects, even when they could describe the object's function. On the other hand, copying gestures was not impaired relative to naming gestures, indicating that an ideomotor deficit in action execution, per se, was unlikely to explain the impairments in object use. We suggest instead that …

Differences in Praxis Errors in Autism Spectrum Disorder Compared to Developmental Coordination Disorder.

This study aimed to better understand how autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and developmental coordination disorder (DCD) differ in types of praxis errors made on the Florida Apraxia Battery Modified (FAB-M) and the potential relationships between praxis errors and social deficits in ASD. The ASD group made significantly more timing sequencing errors in imitation of meaningful gestures, as well as more body-part-for-tool errors during gesture-to-command compared to the other two groups. In the ASD group, increased temporal errors in meaningful imitation were significantly correlated with poorer a…
