Clinico-Pathological Profile and Outcomes of 45 Cases of Plasma Cell Gingivitis.

Plasma cell gingivitis (PCG) is an infrequent inflammatory disease of the gingiva of unknown etiology, characterized by a dense polyclonal proliferation of plasma cells in the connective tissue. The aim of this study was to present a case series of patients affected by PCG, analyzing demographic, clinical, histopathological, and therapeutic data. A group of 36 females and 9 males with a mean age of 60.3 years was evaluated. Clinically, 25 cases were bullous, a clinical phenotype never reported to date, 4 erythematous, 4 keratotic, 4 verruciform, and 3 ulcerative. On histological examination, p…

Oral histoplasmosis masquerading as acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis: A rare case report.

Histoplasmosis also called as "Darling's Disease" is a community-acquired primary pulmonary disease caused by inhalation of dust containing spores of soil-dwelling dimorphic fungi, Histoplasma capsulatum. Presentation of fungi in the oral cavity is usually rare and is generally associated with an immunocompromised state. Here, we present a rare case of histoplasmosis in an immunocompetent patient, with discrete oral presentation, that initially mimicked acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis. Gingival biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of histoplasmosis, which responded favorably to the initial t…

Subgingival Microbiota in White Patients With Desquamative Gingivitis: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Presence of epithelial desquamation, erythema, and erosions on gingival tissue is usually described in the literature as desquamative gingivitis (DG). A wide range of autoimmune/dermatologic disorders can manifest as DG, although the two more common are oral lichen planus and mucous membrane pemphigoid. The aim of this study is to investigate prevalence of 11 periodontopathogenic microorganisms in patients with DG and to compare it with the microbiologic status of individuals affected by plaque-induced gingivitis (pGI). METHODS: Cross-sectional clinical and microbiologic data were…

Cetylpyridinium chloride mouth rinses alleviate experimental gingivitis by inhibiting dental plaque maturation.

Oral rinses containing chemotherapeutic agents, such as cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), can alleviate plaque-induced gingival infections, but how oral microbiota respond to these treatments in human population remains poorly understood. Via a double-blinded, randomised controlled trial of 91 subjects, the impact of CPC-containing oral rinses on supragingival plaque was investigated in experimental gingivitis, where the subjects, after a 21-day period of dental prophylaxis to achieve healthy gingivae, received either CPC rinses or water for 21 days. Within-subject temporal dynamics of plaque mi…

Immunohistochemical analysis of Langerhans cells in chronic gingivitis using anti-CD1a antibody.

BACKGROUND: The Langerhans cells (LCs) are dendritic cells (DCs) which belong to the group of antigen presenting cells (APCs). Their function is to recognize the antigen, capture it, and present it to the T lymphocytes; thus initiating an early immune response. The antigen presenting functional LCs may play an important part in initiation and development of gingivitis. The aim of this study was to analyze the density, intraepithelial distribution, and morphology of LCs in gingival epithelium among different age groups with chronic gingivitis and to compare it with that of normal gingiva. MATE…

[Systemic immunological response in children with chronic gingivitis and gastro-intestinal pathology].

Study of the immune system mechanisms in chronic catarrhal gingivitis in children with gastrointestinal pathology was performed in 102 children (49 with chronic gastritis and duodenitis and 53 with no signs of gastrointestinal pathology). Forty-eight children with healthy periodontium constituted control group. Generalized chronic catarrhal gingivitis in children with gastroduodenal pathology is characterized by intense humoral response by simultaneous T-cell immunity suppression. Detection of high serum titers of circulating immune complexes in patients with chronic catarrhal gingivitis sugge…

An Unusual Plasma Cell Gingivitis Case Related to Use of Herbal Toothpowder.

INTRODUCTION: Plasma cell gingivitis (PCG) is a rare benign condition of gingiva marked by dense infiltration of plasma cells into the subepithelial gingival tissue. Considered to be a true hypersensitivity reaction, it leads to edematous enlargement of gingiva extending up to the mucogingival junction. Identification and removal of the allergen leads to remission of the lesion. This case describes an unusual case of PCG. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient did not respond well to conventional periodontal therapy. Discontinuation of herbal toothpowder with surgical periodontal therapy led to remis…

[Efficacy of hyaluronic acid in the treatment of chronic gingivitis in children].

INTRODUCTION/AIM: Gingivitis is a common occurrence in children and may well be thought as a risk factor for the appearance and progression of the diseases of parodontal tissues. It is thus necessary to react in a timely and adequate fashion to prevent the disease to become serious and produce parodontopathy. The aim of the study was to establish the efficacy of hyaluronic acid in the treatment of chronic gingivitis in children. METHODS: The study enrolled 130 children with permanent dentition. All of the examinees were divided into three groups: group I--50 patients with chronic gingivitis i…

[Mouthwash solutions with microencapsuled natural extracts: Efficiency for dental plaque and gingivitis].

Mouthwash solutions are mainly used for their antiseptic properties. They currently include synthetic agents (chlorhexidine, triclosan, etc.) or essential oils (especially Listerine). Many natural extracts may also be used. These associate both antiseptic effects and direct action on host response, due to their antioxidant, immunoregulatory, analgesic, buffering, or healing properties. The best known are avocado oil, manuka oil, propolis oil, grapefruit seed extract, pycnogenol, aloe vera, Q10 coenzyme, green tea, and megamin. The development of new technologies, such as microencapsulation (Gi
