Thermoluminescent dosemeters were used to estimate gonadal dosage during hip dysplasia radiography of labrador retriever dogs. The mean radiation dose to the unshielded testes was 100 millirad (mrad) and the estimated dose to the shielded testes was 9 mrad. It was considered unnecessary to shield the ovaries.

A TSH radioimmunoassay is described, which was used to investigate the behaviour of the TSH pituitary response (as measured by the secretory area) to TRH in groups of subjects of both sexes and different phases of gonadal activity. The pituitary-gonadal axis was studied in 28 men with severe protein-calorie malnutrition in a Calcutta hospital. The men were selected for the severity of their malnutrition and for absence of other diseases. They had clinical findings of hypogonadism and low total and unbound plasma testosterone. During 2-5 months of refeeding there was clinical recovery and increase of plasma testosterone to normal. It now seems probable that most cases of pure gonadal dysgenesis in XY women are genetically determined rather than induced by environmental agents. Some sporadic cases may conceivably be the result of X-Y interchange and it is suggested that more strenuous efforts be made to study the inheritance of X-linked markers in these cases and in XX true hermaphrodites. Such studies have already been most informative in XX males.
