Although it has been difficult to prove the direct involvement of cockroaches (i.e. insects of the order Blattaria) in the transmission of pathogenic agents to humans, such insects often carry microorganisms that are important in nosocomial infections, and their medical importance in the spread of bacteria cannot be ruled out. In houses and institutions with poor standards of hygiene, heavy infestations with cockroaches, such as the peridomestic American cockroach (Periplaneta americana L.) and the domestic German cockroach (Blattella germanica L.), can occur. In the present study, cockroaches

To evaluate antimicrobial activities of tosufloxacin (TFLX), minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of TFLX and other drugs were determined against clinical isolates that were obtained in our laboratory from February of 1993 to January of 1994 (Period I), and from February of 1995 to January of 1996 (Period II). The results are summarized as follows: 1. Compared to MIC90's reported by others for TFLX in the 1980's, those obtained by us against beta-streptococci, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Peptostreptococcus spp., Haemophilus influenzae and Salmonella spp. were similar to, but those obtained a

Many patients who present with acute or chronic diarrhea do not have an important organic disease. Most have functional diarrhea. The history, clinical examination, and initial laboratory studies should lead to a provisional diagnosis with respect to organic or functional origin and help define whether the disease affects the small or large intestine. Specific studies are then obtained to define organic causes. The most common causes of acute diarrhea are infections and drugs, while the most common causes of chronic diarrhea are inflammatory bowel disease, malabsorption, parasitic infections,

Three hundred and fifteen subgingival isolates were tested for their susceptibility to a mouthwash containing 0.2% chlorhexidine. The majority of strains tested were susceptible at high dilution although some strains of S. mitior, S. sanguis, and Capnocytophaga were relatively resistant. It was concluded that, on the basis of these in vitro results, the mouthwash should have potential for subgingival use in the treatment of chronic periodontitis.

Susceptibility testing of ceftobiprole and comparators against 12,240 isolates was performed following CLSI/EUCAST guidelines. The percentage of susceptible MRSA isolates was higher for ceftobiprole (96.5% susceptible) than for ceftaroline (86.2% susceptible). Both ceftobiprole (MIC50/90, 0.5/2 mg/L) and ceftaroline (MIC50/90, 0.25/1 mg/L) demonstrated potent activity against coagulase-negative staphylococci. Ceftobiprole demonstrated good potency against Enterococcus faecalis (MIC50/90 values of 0.5/2 mg/L); ceftaroline (MIC50/90, 2/8 mg/L) was 4-fold less active against these strains. Ceftob

Tissue factor pathway inhibitor 1 (TFPI-1) is a serine protease inhibitor that inhibits tissue factor (TF)-mediated coagulation. The C-terminal region of TFPI-1 could be cleaved off and proved to be antimicrobial against a broad-spectrum of microorganism. In a previous study, a C-terminal peptide, TC24 (with 24 amino acids), derived from tongue sole (Cynoglossus semilaevis) TFPI-1, was synthesized and found antibacterial against Micrococcus luteus. In the present study, the antibacterial spectrum and the action mode of TC24 was further examined, and its in vivo function was analyzed. Our resul

In 2003, 826 uropathogenic strains were obtained from the urine of our patients. We assessed their activities to antibacterial agents based on the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) breakpoints recommended by the National Committee for Clinical Standards (NCCLS). Methicillin-resistant strains accounted for about 70% of Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis. The most common gram-positive species was Enterococcus faecalis (15.6%). Enterococcus faecium was the most resistant of the enterococcal species, and the rate of susceptibility to beta-lactams (BLs), fluoroquinolones (FQs

Activity of tigecycline against nosocomial secondary peritonitis isolates collected along 18 months in 29 Spanish hospitals was tested by Etest in a central laboratory, considering Food and Drug Administration (FDA)/British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (BSAC)/European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST) breakpoints. A total of 600 facultative/aerobic isolates (392 Gram negative, 208 Gram positive) and 100 anaerobes were tested. None of the 220 Escherichia coli isolates was resistant to tigecycline (MIC(50)/MIC(90) = 0.25/0.5 microg/mL), with 0.5% (FDA breakpoin

Bacteremia is one of the major infections in orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT). The study of 83 adults who underwent OLT from 2001 to 2004, included patients followed prospectively from the day of transplantation to 4 weeks after the procedure by bacteriological cultures. The microorganisms were investigated according to standard National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS) procedures. Blood samples were examined in 59 recipients (71.1%) before and in 76 patients (91.6%) during the month after transplantation. Among 249 investigated samples, 96 were positive, as cultured f

Whether reactive oxygen species are a consequence or a cause of antibacterial activity is not fully known. A glutathione (GSH)-mediated oxidative defense mechanism is an important factor against bacterial infection. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) storm-mediated bacterial death by depleting GSH is also considered an effective strategy. Therefore, we designed and synthesized hybrid iridium ruthenium oxide nanozymes (IrRuOx NPs), where IrRuOx NPs alternately consume GSH through double redox electron pair auto-valent cycles, while an IrRuOx NP-mediated Fenton-like reaction occurs to realize an ROS

Pathogenic bacteria, with their innate resistance to drugs, pose a constant threat to human health and well-being and put a persistent strain on the health care system. Development of more effective and safer novel antibacterial drugs is warranted to counter the menace unleashed by pathogenic bacteria. Integration of privileged pharmacophores from various bioactive molecules into a single template is a promising strategy to obtain new leads with unique mechanisms of action to overcome drug resistance. In the past few years, numerous isatin-based hybrid molecules were screened and their pharmac
