The activity of alkaline phosphatase and peroxidase was measured in polymorphonuclears in 20 cases of myelodysplasia syndromes, 10 cases of chronic myeloid leukaemia. Reduced phosphatase activity was found in 5 cases and peroxidase activity in 3 cases of myelodysplasia syndromes. No evident correlation was noted between the activity of these enzymes and prognosis. Increased proportion of peroxidase-negative granulocytes was observed, moreover, in most cases of chronic myeloid leukaemia. The observations will be continued in larger material.

Marked leukopenia and sequestration of granulocytes in the lung are consistently seen in severe early onset group B streptococcal (GBS) disease in human infants. To investigate the role of granulocytes as potential mediators in the pulmonary pathophysiology of this disease, the effects of intravenously administered GBS type III toxin were studied in young lambs before and after granulocyte depletion with hydroxyurea. Granulocyte depletion markedly reduced the 4-fold increase in total lung resistance and the decrease in dynamic compliance observed after GBS toxin. Granulocyte depletion signific…

Between May and October 1984 in the Department of Obstetrics of the Frauenklinik Berlin-Neukölln, 147 blood samples were taken from 106 women who were pregnant or already in labor. The purpose was to determine the concentration of the elastase of the polymorphonuclear leukocytes. Towards the end of pregnancy (from the beginning of the 28th gestational week till birth of the child), the range of 66 ng/ml-122 ng/ml with a median of 92 ng/ml was considered normal. It was shown that the concentration of elastase in the plasma of pregnant women is affected neither by the increasing gestational age

We are presenting a quantitative determination of the effect of granulocytes, monocytes and lymphocytes on the course of infection during antibiotic treatment. The animal model was a short-term infection of the thigh muscle in normal or irradiated mice. Two kinds of antibiotics were used: tobramycin for Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections and ampicillin for Escherichia coli infections. The number of granulocytes was changed by irradiating the mice before they were infected. The dose-effect relations for both combinations of bacteria and antibiotics were determined on various days after irradiati…

Occult intraperitoneal abscesses are difficult to locate and dispose of. Therefore, a method of examination is needed that is specific, can be used at any time, is not expensive, and yields early results within 2-3 h. This seems possible with a new methods of examination. 99mTc-Sn colloid was used to label autologous polymorphonuclear leukocytes which, when reinjected, emigrate to the site of the suspected abscess. Standard scintigraphy localizes the labeled inflammatory cells. In 32 surgical patients, 34 scans were performed with good results (controlled by greyscale ultrasound); 17 (53.1%) s

Granulocytopenia seen during human pneumococcal disease is associated with a worsened prognosis. Streptococcus pneumoniae type 1 reduces circulating granulocytes and induces pulmonary leukostasis in rabbits. We studied which type 1 pneumococcal fraction(s) might be responsible for the reduction in circulating granulocytes. Rabbits were challenged intravenously with nonpyrogenic sterile saline, sonicated type 1 pneumococci, capsular polysaccharide from type 1 pneumococci, or cell walls from type 1 pneumococci. Nonviable pneumococci caused a mean decrease in blood granulocytes of 64% as compared…

Phagocytosis of catalase-positive microbes by normal polymorphonuclear neutrophils results in increased metabolism as required for microbicidal action. Chemiluminescence is a product of the associated oxygenation reactions. Neutrophils from patients with chronic granulomatous disease are capable of phagocytizing catalase-positive microbes, but there is no associated respiratory burst, microbicidal action is greatly decreased, and chemiluminescence is not detected. However, these defective neutrophils can kill catalase-negative, H2O2-generating bacteria. In the present study, chemiluminescence

Necrotic areas of rheumatoid nodules were investigated electron microscopically. PMNs in different stages of disintegration were present in all cases. Granular material, sometimes in a fiberlike orientation, and small fibrils without periodicity were detected between the collagenous fibers. It is assumed that granular material and fibrillar remnants represent degraded collagen. Often these degradation products were present in the neighborhood of disintegrating PMNs. From this morphological relationship it is concluded that enzymes of PMNs may in part be responsible for the fibrinoid necrosis i

Eosinophilic granulocytes in the CSF were observed in 94 of approximately 10,000 qualitative cytologic preparations. Those cases of eosinophilia which occurred in the context of a parasitic disease or a puncture-related hemorrhage were excluded. CSF eosinophilia exceeding 1% was found in 57.5% of the cases and 5% in 23.5%. Increased cell counts were observed in 67.7% of the cases; elevated CSF protein values, in 68% to 73%; blood eosinophils, in 10.4%. There was no reason to suspect a relationship between these findings and the number of eosinophils in the CSF.--Fifty-two percent of the cases …

Human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA) is a tick-borne infection caused by Anaplasma phagocytophilum. Only seven cases of HGA have been reported in Japan to date. We report the case of a 61-year-old female farmer who developed HGA with rash and rhabdomyolysis. The patient had fever and erythema covering the entire body, including the palms. An induration with an eschar was observed on the right leg, indicating that the patient had been bitten by a tick. Elevated serum creatinine and creatinine kinase levels and hematuria indicated rhabdomyolysis. We suspected Japanese spotted fever, a tick-born

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disease that causes chronic and severe lung inflammation and infection associated with high rates of mortality. In CF, disrupted ion exchange in the epithelium results in excessive mucus production and reduced mucociliary clearance, leading to immune system exacerbation and chronic infections with pathogens such as P. aeruginosa and S. aureus. Constant immune stimulation leads to altered immune responses including T cell impairment and neutrophil dysfunction. Specifically, CF is considered a Th17-mediated disease, and it has been proposed that both P. aerugino

Neutrophils are an integral component of the innate immune system and key regulators of cell-mediated defense against bacterial and fungal pathogens. The potential of granulocyte transfusions has been investigated to temporarily replenish innate immune function to prevent and/or treat infections in patients with severe neutropenia or neutrophil dysfunction. However, evidence has been largely theoretical, experimental, and/or inconclusive. Clinical efficacy has yet to be confirmed by large-scale randomized controlled clinical trials. Performing such trials has been hampered by low granulocyte c

BACKGROUND: Granulocytic sarcoma (GS), is also referred to as myeloid sarcoma. It is a solid mass formed by the primitive or immature myeloid cells extramedullary infiltration, which is commonly caused by acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) or chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). It mainly involves bones, lymph nodes, skin and soft tissues of the head and neck. In general, the incidence is low and central nervous system (CNS) involvement is relatively rare. The clinical manifestations of the disease are varied and the treatment is intractable.

We herein report a case of migratory aortitis after the administration of granulocyte-colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) to a 65-year-old woman with a history of pancreatic cancer. She was being administered pegfilgrastim and developed aortitis around the aortic arch. Although it resolved within two weeks, she again developed aortitis around the descending aorta, presenting as migratory aortitis, after pegfilgrastim was resumed. We further experienced three additional cases of G-CSF-induced aortitis that also showed spontaneous resolution, suggesting no or short-term use of immunosuppression. A

As new research reveals, granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) plays an effective role in pregnancy success, considering that it not only affects the embryo implantation and ovarian function but also it promotes endometrial thickening and improves the pathophysiology of endometriosis, which all fundamentally lead to reducing pregnancy loss. In this review, we focus on the role of G-CSF in human reproduction. We summarized its role in ovulation, luteinized unruptured follicle syndrome, poor responders, improving repeated in vitro fertilization failure, endometrial receptivity and treatm

BACKGROUND: Adults with the tick-borne disease human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA) have a spectrum of acute febrile illnesses that, if untreated, might be severe. Clinical presentation and outcomes of children with HGA have been poorly described.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted to determine the frequency, presentation, and outcomes of pediatric patients with HGA between 1994 and 2015 in a region of Wisconsin in which HGA is highly endemic. Patients with related International Classification of Diseases Ninth and Tenth Revision (ICD-9 and ICD-10, respectively) codes or positiv
