Improved indoor air quality during desert dust storms: The impact of the MEDEA exposure-reduction strategies.

Desert dust storms (DDS) are natural events that impact not only populations close to the emission sources but also populations many kilometers away. Countries located across the main dust sources, including countries in the Eastern Mediterranean, are highly affected by DDS. In addition, climate change is expanding arid areas exacerbating DDS events. Currently, there are no intervention measures with proven, quantified exposure reduction to desert dust particles. As part of the wider "MEDEA" project, co-funded by LIFE 2016 Programme, we examined the effectiveness of an indoor exposure-reductio

Association between behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia and residence status in patients with Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: Examining the relationship between the behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) and residence status is crucial to improving BPSD and reducing the burden on caregivers. However, studies on how BPSD differ between individuals living at home and those in institutional settings are lacking. We conducted a questionnaire survey among healthcare providers (HCPs) involved in dementia care and nursing to clarify the characteristics of BPSD by residence status in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) living at home or in facilities. METHODS: We sent questionnaires to HCPs

[Caregiver's burden of caring for patients with dementia in group living compared to to domestic and inpatient care].

The care of demented people by family caregivers is tied with severe burdens. Changing the providing from home care to nursing home residents or outpatient group living will not entirely reduce these burdens. The study is based on evaluated burdens of 314 nursing persons whose demented relations are cared at home, supported by outpatient care or day care, at geriatric care centers and at outpatient group living. All physically improved troubles of these three kinds of care do not differ considerably, compared to the self-judgements in the list of complaints of Giessener-Beschwerdebogen (The Gi

Difference between home and office blood pressures among treated hypertensive patients from the Japan Home versus Office Blood Pressure Measurement Evaluation (J-HOME) study.

This study sought to clarify the factors associated with the magnitude of the difference between home and office blood pressures in treated hypertensive patients. Study subjects consisted of 3,308 essential hypertensive patients (mean age, 66 years; males, 44%) receiving antihypertensive treatment in primary care settings in Japan. Patients were classified into 3 groups (the home effect group, small difference group, and office effect group) according to tertiles of the magnitude of the office-home systolic blood pressure difference. Compared to the other two groups, the home effect group pati

Assessing the Efficacy of a Virtual Assistant in the Remote Cardiac Rehabilitation of Heart Failure and Ischemic Heart Disease Patients: Case-Control Study of Romanian Adult Patients.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of mortality in Europe, with potentially more than 60 million deaths per year, with an age-standardized rate of morbidity-mortality higher in men than women, exceeding deaths from cancer. Heart attacks and strokes account for more than four out of every five CVD fatalities globally. After a patient overcomes an acute cardiovascular event, they are referred for rehabilitation to help them to restore most of their normal cardiac functions. One effective way to provide this activity regimen is via virtual models or telerehabilitation, where the

[Occurrence and type of traumatic experiences among young Bosnian refugees in Denmark].

Prior research has shown that young refugees may be especially traumatised. The study includes 123 young Bosnian refugees, living at two Bosnian boarding-schools in Denmark who were given a revised version of the Harvard Trauma Questionnaire (HTQ). The subjects themselves have on average experienced seven traumatic events, and have either witnessed or had a family member experience an additional six events. Three-quarters have been shot at, have lost their homes and private possession and have been exposed to violence in the form of harassment or humiliation. Two-thirds have lost friends. Thre

Prodromal falls among older nursing home residents.

Although numerous studies have identified medical antecedents of falls among the elderly (premonitory), few have examined falls as a possible predictor of subsequent disease onset (prodromal falling). This study compared disease incidence (up to 12 months after the first fall) among fallers (n = 42) and nonfallers (n = 20) selected from 236 admissions to the health care center of a nursing home. Data collected on up to five new falls per resident (total of 102 falls) included (a) predictors of falls, (b) circumstance of falls, and (c) postfall events. Results showed that although faller and no
