A Common Profile of Disordered Angiogenic Factor Production and the Exacerbation of Inflammation in Early Preeclampsia, Late Preeclampsia, and Intrauterine Growth Restriction.

Preeclampsia and intrauterine growth restriction are two separate disease entities that, according to numerous reports, share the same pathogenesis. In both, angiogenesis disorders and generalized inflammation are the dominant symptoms. In this study, we hypothesized that both diseases demonstrate the same profile in early preeclampsia, late preeclampsia, and intrauterine growth restriction patients, with the only difference being the degree of exacerbation of lesions. One hundred sixty-seven patients were enrolled in the study and divided into four groups: early preeclampsia, late preeclampsi

The relationship between rumination, posttraumatic stress disorder, and posttraumatic growth among Chinese adolescents after earthquake: A longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and posttraumatic growth (PTG) can coexist in individuals following traumatic experiences, and cognitive pathways to PTSD and PTG can be different. Nevertheless, to date, no study using the longitudinal-design has examine the cognitive process of PTSD and PTG, nor has the specific causal relation between cognitive factors and PTSD/PTG been clarified in the aftermath of disaster. Therefore, the aim of this study was to extend previous study from a longitudinal perspective, and further examine the possible cognitive mechanism of PTSD and PTG in a

Are personality disorder dimensions related over time? An examination over the course of ten years using multivariate growth modeling.

OBJECTIVE: Despite the well-documented literature on cross-sectional comorbidity, there is a paucity of data on the associations between personality disorders (PDs) over time. Using multivariate growth modeling, the present study examined the inter-relationships between pairs of PD disorder dimensions. METHODS: We tested these associations in a sample of 142 depressed outpatients followed-up five times over the course of 10 years. RESULTS: We found cross-sectional associations between the initial levels of severity of many pairs of PD dimensions. However, there was limited support for longit

Fibroblast growth factor 23 and disordered vitamin D metabolism in chronic kidney disease: updating the "trade-off" hypothesis.

The discovery of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) has clarified much of our understanding of abnormalities in phosphorus and vitamin D metabolism in chronic kidney disease (CKD). FGF23 is a bone-derived hormone that promotes phosphaturia and decreases the synthesis of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25(OH)(2)D). The primary systemic stimuli of FGF23 secretion are increased 1,25(OH)(2)D levels and increased dietary phosphorus intake. In kidney failure, FGF23 levels increase early and steadily rise with progression of kidney disease, likely as an appropriate physiologic adaptation to maintain norm

Optimal foetal growth in the reduction of learning and behaviour disorder and prevention of sudden infant death (SIDS) after the first month.

A theory is presented that a diet low in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in the third trimester of pregnancy may delay myelination and brain maturation. This may underpin learning and behaviour disorders and sudden infant death (SIDS) after the first month, conditions that are associated with lower than average birthweight. Epidemiological evidence is reviewed showing an inverse relation between the proportion of heavy newborns (> 3500 g) and infant mortality rate. Some countries with a lower proportion of heavy newborns despite equally high standards of living and medical care have higher

Noonan syndrome spectrum disorders in real life: patient characteristics and response to growth hormone therapy in a genetically defined single-country multicenter cohort.

The variety of genes associated with Noonan syndrome spectrum disorders (NSSD) is expanding, and real-life experience with its management is increasing; however, phenotypic differences among genotypes remain poorly defined. We aimed to assess clinical characteristics and response to growth hormone (GH) therapy in a genetically confirmed, single-country multicentre NSSD cohort. We included 101 patients with NSSD (56 males) from six centres: 76 with (likely) pathogenic PTPN11 variants, 7 with SOS1 variants, and 18 with other gene variations. All completed at least one year of GH therapy; 23 reac

Insulin-like growth factor-1 levels are associated with high comorbidity of metabolic disorders in obese subjects; a Japanese single-center, retrospective-study.

Insulin like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) plays important roles in metabolic functions, especially in adulthood. Additionally, obese subjects are reportedly predisposed to having low absolute IGF-1 levels. However, the prevalence and clinical characteristics of obese subjects with low IGF-1 levels are unknown. We examined 64 obese subjects with a body mass index (BMI) ≥ 35 kg/m2, with no history of endocrinological disorders, receiving inpatient care. IGF-1 levels were interpreted based on the IGF-1 standard deviation score (SDS) clinically used and standardized by age and sex (low IGF-1 group; ≤ -

Insulin-like growth factor 2 receptor is an IFNgamma-inducible microglial protein that facilitates intracellular HIV replication: implications for HIV-induced neurocognitive disorders.

Insulin-like growth factor 2 receptor (IGF2R), also known as cation-independent mannose 6-phosphate (M6P) receptor, is a transmembrane glycoprotein localized in the trans-Golgi region and is involved in targeting both M6P-bearing enzymes and IGF2 to the lysosomal compartment. During development, IGF2R plays a crucial role in removing excess growth factors from both tissue and blood. Due to the perinatal lethality of the global Igf2r knockout, the function of IGF2R in adults, particularly in the CNS, is not known. We made a novel observation that IGF2R is highly expressed in microglial nodules

Aberrant expression of transforming growth factor beta-1 (TGF beta-1) per se does not discriminate fibrotic from non-fibrotic chronic myeloproliferative disorders.

Transforming growth factor beta-1 (TGF beta-1) is a potent inducer of fibrosis and has been shown to be essential for the development of bone marrow fibrosis in an animal model of idiopathic myelofibrosis (IMF). IMF belongs to the Philadelphia chromosome negative chronic myeloproliferative disorders (Ph(-) CMPD). Megakaryocytes and platelets have been suggested as the major cellular source of TGF beta-1 in IMF. The osteoclastogenesis inhibitory factor osteoprotegerin (OPG) seems to be regulated by TGF beta-1 and substantial involvement of OPG expression in the process of osteosclerosis in IMF

Novel Roles of Follistatin/Myostatin in Transforming Growth Factor-β Signaling and Adipose Browning: Potential for Therapeutic Intervention in Obesity Related Metabolic Disorders.

Obesity is a global health problem and a major risk factor for several metabolic conditions including dyslipidemia, diabetes, insulin resistance and cardiovascular diseases. Obesity develops from chronic imbalance between energy intake and energy expenditure. Stimulation of cellular energy burning process has the potential to dissipate excess calories in the form of heat via the activation of uncoupling protein-1 (UCP1) in white and brown adipose tissues. Recent studies have shown that activation of transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) signaling pathway significantly contributes to the develop

Bioactive Effect of Plasma-Rich in Growth Factors (PRGFs) on Cell-Based In Vitro Models of Skin Inflammation in Relation to Inflammatory Skin Disorders.

Plasma rich in growth factors (PRGFs) has proven potentially beneficial as a bioregenerator in patients with chronic skin disorders due to its anti-inflammatory effect. However, its therapeutic potential may be limited by soluble autoimmune components associated with inflammatory dermatoses in blood plasma. To evaluate the impact of skin health status on cell bioactivity, PRGF was prepared from healthy (H) donors as well as from individuals with atopic dermatitis (AD), psoriasis (PS), or lichen sclerosus (LS). Leukocyte exclusion and heat inactivation (Immunosafe treatment) were evaluated as p

Serum mRNA levels of cytokeratin-19 and vascular endothelial growth factor in oral squamous cell carcinoma and oral potentially malignant disorders using RT-PCR.

BACKGROUND: Oral cancers, which include tumors of the oral cavity, salivary glands, and pharynx, are becoming increasingly prevalent worldwide. Squamous cell carcinoma accounts for over 90% of malignant oral lesions, with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) being notably common in the Indian subcontinent and other regions of Asia. This is especially true in South-Central Asia, including Sri Lanka, where it is particularly prevalent among men. This study aims to evaluate the levels of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor-A (VEGF-A) and Cytokeratin-19 (CK-19) mRNAs in whole blood as a potential me

The best tool for the assessment of developmental disorders in children with down syndrome: comparison of standard and specialized growth charts - cross sectional study.

Down Syndrome (DS) is a chromosomal abnormality associated with a spectrum of cognitive and physical disabilities. Children with DS are exposed to both lower and excess body weight and follow distinct growth-curve patterns that deviate significantly from those of children without chromosomal defects. Anthropometric parameters are assessed in the pediatric population with the use of growth charts. The study is based on data from 411 children and adults with DS from Poland. Detailed information concerning children and online survey results were also analyzed. Centiles and standard deviation scor

The S6k/4E-BP mediated growth promoting sub-pathway of insulin signalling cascade is essential to restrict pathogenesis of poly(Q) disorders in Drosophila.

Human neurodegenerative polyglutamine [poly(Q)] disorders, such as Huntington's disease (HD) and spinocerebellar ataxias (SCA), are characterised by an abnormal expansion of CAG repeats in the affected gene. The mutated proteins misfold and aggregate to form inclusion bodies that sequester important factors involved in cellular transcription, growth, stress and autophagic response and other essential functions. The insulin signalling pathway has been demonstrated as a major modifier and a potential drug target to ameliorate the poly(Q) mediated neurotoxicity in various model systems. Insulin s
