Repetitive and restricted behaviors, habits, body-focused repetitive behaviors, and motor stereotypies.

Movement disorder definitions that include the clinical characteristics "sudden, rapid, repetitive, brief, and involuntary" are not limited to motor tic disorders. Hence, it is essential that caregivers be aware of other relatively common conditions that could be confused with the diagnosis of tics. Included in this differential are entities such as repetitive and restricted behaviors (RRBs), habits, body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs), and motor stereotypies. The importance of separation of these individual conditions is further emphasized by the recognition that they can be coexisting …

Data on bowel habits, stool forms, use of school latrines, socio-dietary habits, and demographic profiles was collected. Statistical analysis was performed using the chi-squared test and unpaired t…

Exacerbating effects of Western dietary habits on experimentally induced periodontitis in rats.

This study explored the impact of western diet (WD) on a ligature-induced periodontitis (PD) model. After either control diet (CD) or WD feeding for 16 weeks, male Wistar rats were allocated in six groups (n = 6). The first and second groups had no PD. The third and fourth groups had ligature-induced PD for 10 days, while the fifth and sixth groups had ligature-induced PD for 10 days, followed by ligature removal healing period for another 10 days. The CD contained 13.71% protein, 75.98% carbohydrate, and 10.31% fat, though WD composed of 14.7% protein, 40.7% carbohydrate, and 44.6% fat. After

METHODS: An observational, cross-sectional, descriptive study involving 53,053 workers from various labour sectors across several Spanish autonomous communities was conducted. It included 31,753 men (17,527 of them…

Oral Health Status and Nutritional Habits as Predictors for Developing Alzheimer's Disease.

OBJECTIVE: Poor oral health, mainly tooth loss, has been suggested to pose a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD). The nature of this relationship can be explained by mastication deficit and nutritional status. Also, the influence of nutritional parameters on cognitive impairment has been documented. The aim of this study was to investigate whether poor dental status and nutrition habits can be potential separate or associated risk factors for development of the AD. METHODS: The study sample included 116 patients with AD and 63 controls. Sociodemographic variables were investigated as fac…

Dietary Habits Associated with Anemia in Pregnant Women Attending Antenatal Care Services.

Anemia is a major cause of morbidity and mortality of pregnant women and increases the risks of fetal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. Approximately 50% of all anemia is estimated to be caused by low dietary intake of iron, poor absorption of dietary iron, or blood loss. The objective of the present study was to determine the prevalence of and assess the dietary habits associated with anemia in pregnant women receiving antenatal care (ANC) in Unguja Island, Tanzania. A cross-sectional study was conducted to select 338 pregnant women at Kivunge, Mwembeladu, and Mnazimmoja hospitals from Ma…

Fluid Intake Habits in Type 1 Diabetes Individuals during Typical Training Bouts.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Hyperglycemia may influence the hydration status in diabetic individuals. During exercise, type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) individuals may be challenged by a higher risk of dehydration due to a combination of fluid losses from sweat and increased urine output via glycosuria. So far, no study has characterised spontaneous fluid intake in T1DM individuals during active trainings. METHODS: A validated questionnaire was used to assess T1DM participants' diabetes therapy, sports characteristics and fluid intake during training; results were then compared to an age- and sport-match

Age, gender and parafunctional habits as prognostic factors for temporomandibular joint arthrocentesis.

OBJECTIVE: Arthrocentesis is an effective procedure for management of symptomatic patients with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) anterior disc displacement without reduction (ADDWOR), but its prognostic factors are still under investigation. METHODS: Thirty-six patients with ADDWOR underwent arthrocentesis of the TMJ and hyaluronic acid injection. They were divided into groups based on three prognostic factors: Age, gender, and the presence of parafunctional habits. The procedure outcome (success or failure) was based on pre-set criteria for improvement in pain and maximum mouth opening (MMO) on…

Smoking habits and parathyroid hormone concentrations in young adults: The CARDIA study.

Conflicting results have been reported concerning a relationship between smoking and serum PTH. Our study objective was to examine whether smoking was associated with serum PTH independent of correlates of PTH among young adults, and explore potential mechanisms. This was a cross-sectional study of healthy individuals, 24-36 years old, examined during 1992 through 1993 in California, USA (a subset of Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults study). Linear regression was used to obtain adjusted means of PTH according to smoking habit (current, former, never). Biomarkers for calcium meta

Dietary habits and neurological features of Parkinson's disease patients: Implications for practice.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Parkinson's disease (PD) patients can benefit considerably from appropriate nutritional care, particularly from diet. However, there is limited evidence on the eating habits of PD patients and their relationship with the features of the disease. METHODS: We conducted a large case-control study. Consecutive PD patients (N = 600) receiving systematic nutritional care and healthy controls (N = 600) matched (1:1) for age, gender, education, physical activity level and residence were studied using a 66-item food frequency questionnaire. The relationship between dietary habits an…
