BACKGROUND: Aerobatic flight is a challenge for the vestibular system, which is likely to lead to adaptive changes in the vestibular responses of pilots. We investigated whether aerobatic pilots, as individuals who experience intense vestibular stimulation, present modifications of the vestibular-ocular reflex, motion sickness susceptibility and intensity, visual vertical estimation, and visual dependence as compared to normal volunteers.METHODS: To evaluate vestibulo-ocular reflexes, eye movements were recorded with videonystagmography while subjects were rotated on a rotatory chair with the

OBJECTIVE: Visual snow syndrome (VS) is mainly characterized by flickering, little dots in both visual fields. The recognition of the clinical entity of VS has been increasing recently. Diagnosis is based on patient reports and not better accounted for by another diagnosis.
BACKGROUND: The exact pathophysiology of this syndrome is still unknown. In this study, our aim was to investigate the role of neurophysiological assessments of the occipital cortex in VS patients with (VSm ) or without migraine (VSwom ) and the healthy control (HC).
METHODS: To assess the occipital cortex hyperexcitabili

Chronic mild or unpredictability stress produces a persistent depressive-like state. The main symptoms of depression include weight loss, despair, anhedonia, diminished motivation and mild cognition impairment, which could influence the ability of reward-related learning. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the effects of chronic restraint stress on the performance of reward-related learning of rats. We used the exposure of repeated restraint stress (6h/day, for 28days) to induce depression-like behavior in rats. Then designed tasks including Pavlovian conditioning (magazine head entrie

ΑBSTRACT: R1 and R2 blink reflex latencies were investigated blind in 55 patients with chronic tension-type headache, 55 patients with migraine, and 55 headache-free controls. Standard electrical stimulation of the supraorbital nerve was applied and the response was recorded from the ipsilateral orbicularis oculi muscles. There were no R1 or R2 latency differences between the three groups. During migraine attacks we observed a statistically significant reduction of R2 amplitude and area. The main finding of our study was the elicitation of the late R2" response at different interstimulus inter

Acid-sensing ion channels (ASICs) are cation channels activated by protons. ASIC1a, a primary ASIC subunit in the brain, was recently characterized in the olfactory bulb. The present study tested the hypothesis that ASIC1a is essential for normal olfactory function. Olfactory behavior of wild-type (WT) and ASIC1-/- mice was evaluated by using three standard olfactory tests: (1) the buried food test, (2) the olfactory habituation test, and (3) the olfactory preference test. In buried food test, ASIC1-/- mice had significantly longer latency to uncover buried food than WT mice. In olfactory habi

BACKGROUND: Electrodermal reactivity has been successfully used as indicator of interest, curiosity as well as depressive states. The measured reactivity depends on the quantity of sweat secreted by those eccrine sweat glands that are located in the hypodermis of palmar and plantar regions. Electrodermal hyporeactive individuals are those who show an unusual rapid habituation to identical non-significant stimuli. Previous findings suggested that electrodermal hyporeactivity has a high sensitivity and a high specificity for suicide. The aims of the present study are to test the effectiveness an

There is a constant need to assess spatial memory in small rodents to elucidate the basics of cognition in neuroscience experiments. Thus, the significance of the Barnes maze in the biology of hippocampal and cortical neural function cannot be overemphasized. Despite the wide use of the Barnes maze, the effect of maze task training on the structure of hippocampal neurons is yet to be elucidated. Adult Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to intense training on the Barnes maze (3 months). Subsequently, the hippocampus (cornus ammonis and dentate gyrus) of separate sets of rats was processed for G

Translational biomarkers, such as prepulse inhibition (PPI) of the acoustic startle response, are playing an increasingly important role in the development of antipsychotic drugs for schizophrenia and related conditions. However, attempts to reliably induce a PPI deficit by psychotomimetic drugs have not been successful, leaving an unmet need for a cross-species psychosis model sensitive to this widely studied surrogate treatment target. Sleep deprivation (SD) might be such a model as it has previously been shown to induce PPI deficits in rats, which could be selectively prevented with antipsy

Although habituation is ubiquitous in the animal kingdom, its underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. In this study, we began to explore the molecular cascades underlying short-term habituation in the leech Hirudo medicinalis. In H. medicinalis, a training paradigm, consisting of low-frequency repetitive electrical stimulation of the skin, produces a gradual increase in the latency to swim that spontaneously recovers within 20-30 min. As first step in determining the molecular pathways in short-term habituation, we examined the role of Ca(2+). Both Ca(2+) influx through voltage-gated c

OBJECTIVE: A detailed understanding of how individuals diagnosed with social anxiety disorder (SAD) respond physiologically under social-evaluative threat is lacking. Our aim was to isolate the specific components of public speaking that trigger fear in vulnerable individuals and best discriminate between SAD and healthy individuals.
METHOD: Sixteen individuals diagnosed with SAD (DSM-IV-TR criteria) and 16 healthy individuals were enrolled in the study from December 2005 to March 2008. Subjects were asked to prepare and deliver a short speech in a virtual reality (VR) environment. The VR env

We have reported that continuous infusion of beta-amyloid protein-(1-40) into the cerebral ventricle produces learning and memory deficits in rats. Propentofylline has potent stimulatory effects on nerve growth factor (NGF) synthesis/secretion in mouse astrocytes in vitro and increases cerebral NGF content in aged rats. In the present study, we examined the effects of propentofylline on learning and memory deficits in beta-amyloid protein-infused rats. The rats were given propentofylline orally once a day throughout the period of behavioral examination. In the beta-amyloid protein-infused rats

This study examined the cognitive functioning in 236 infants at 8 and 18 months of age. Thirty-seven infants were heavily exposed to cocaine in-utero, 30 were lightly exposed, and 169 were not exposed to cocaine. Cognitive functioning was evaluated with the Bayley Scales of Infant Development (2nd ed.; N. Bayley, 1993) at both ages. Infant information processing was also assessed with an infant-controlled habituation procedure. Results indicated that (a) infants of cocaine-abusing women had higher neonatal medical and environmental risk scores; (b) at 8 months, exposure groups did not differ i

The aim of this study was to determine whether varying the predetermined malaise level at which provocative motion challenges were stopped would affect the habituation rate. At the rate of 2 per day, 21 motion challenges were delivered, stopping either at initial symptoms or at moderate nausea, on a cross-over design randomized between subjects (n = 20). The cross-coupled motion challenge had an incrementing profile of rotational velocity from 2-90 degrees.s-1 in steps of 2 degrees.s-1 every 30 s, with 8 head movements per 30 s, of approximately 45 degrees. The number of head movements tolerat

Mice of the BALB/c strain are widely used in behavioral research in spite of the albino condition, which can obscure brain-behavior relationships. We have developed a pigmented BALB strain, congenic to BALB/c, which could be more appropriate for neurogenetic studies that aim at identifying the effects of neurological mutations on behavior. Comparison of inbred albino and pigmented congenic BALB arising from the same litters provides a valuable tool for detecting the consequences of the albino mutation on behavioral performances. Preliminary results presented here show that the albino condition

Horizontal motor activity, rearing and head dipping were recorded automatically in rats placed on a holeboard and taken as indices of locomotion and exploration. Other behaviours were assessed visually using a video camera. SKF 38393, 15-30 mg/kg (D-1 agonist), suppressed all three behavioural measures more effectively in habituated than in naive rats. These actions were blocked by SCH 23390 (0.05 mg/kg, D-1 antagonist) but not by haloperidol (0.05 mg/kg, D-2 antagonist). Apomorphine modified behaviour biphasically, causing haloperidol-resistant sedation at a low, presynaptic dose (0.05 mg/kg)

Reeler mice have a mutation in the reelin gene. As a result, Reeler mice lack cortical layers, yet their brains are still largely functional. However, Reeler mice display strong motor phenotypes, including ataxic gait and tics, and we posit that their whisking behaviour might also be disrupted. We used high-speed video to film and track whisker movements in 9 adult Reeler mice and 9 age-matched controls in three whisker movement assessment tasks, including our established novel object exploration and open field tasks, as well as a new open field habituation task. Overall, whisker movements in

BACKGROUND: Changes in response patterns of biological stress systems, including responses of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis to repeated stress, can promote the development and progression of chronic diseases via changes in downstream inflammatory processes. The aim of this project is thus to investigate, whether habituation of biological stress system activity including responses of the inflammatory system can be modified. Aiming to test for possible paths of action, a randomized controlled study with two intervention programs designed t
