[Accumulation and stability of drugs in hair].

The transfer of cocaine and methadone into and out of human hair was investigated in vitro. A transfer in either the one or the other direction could not be observed. In addition the drug concentrations in hair obtained form addicts at different distance from the scalp were determined. The results demonstrated a decrease of the drug levels from the proximal to the distal parts of the hair. The dimensions of the decrease varied within wide ranges.

Disorders of the hair and scalp in children.

A wide variety of disorders involving the scalp and hair exist that may be encountered in the pediatric and adolescent population. An approach to the differential diagnosis of many of these conditions can be considered once the patient is found to have either alopecia, scaling, or tumors of the scalp. Certainly other causes of scalp or hair disease exist but the more common disorders can be appropriately considered in this manner.

Hair loss in children and adolescents.

No other body system is more exposed to the public eye than the skin and the hair. Pediatric nurse practitioners (PNPs) frequently encounter patients in their practice settings with the complaint of "hair loss." The most often diagnosed causes of hair loss include tinea capitis, alopecia areata, traction alopecia, and trichotillomania. This article defines these conditions, explores the causes for them, and describes the incidences. Emphasis is placed on the PNP's role on making a differential diagnosis based on the presenting clinical manifestations, patient history, and laboratory testing. T…

Adsorption and elution of metals on hair.

The adsorption of zinc and lead on hair was dependent on the acidity of the hair and/or the medium in which the hair sample was immersed, suggesting that hair is an ion exchanger. The pKa was estimated to be between 4.5 and 5.0. The coexistence of mercuric ion or PCMB reduced zinc adsorption by only a few percent, whereas zinc inhibited mercuric ion adsorption to a greater extent. These facts suggest that the binding sites in hair for metals are located on functional groups like carboxyl groups rather than sulfhydryl groups. The removal and/or elution of metals from hair were observed for 18 e…

[Disorder of hair growth in hyperprolactinemia].

Functional hyperprolactinemia was found in five female patients, 25-35 years old, seeking medical consultation for hair loss, together with hypertrichosis (4x), disturbances of cyclic bleeding periods (4x), secondary amenorrhea (2x), galactorrhea (2x), seborrhea (2x) and persisting acne (1x). Other hormonal parameters including testosterone levels and thyroid gland function tests were unchanged. Prolactinoma was excluded by x-ray diagrams, partly also by computer tomograms of the sella. In two patients increased telogen effluvium was found by trichogram examination with some dystrophic hairs; …

Structural abnormalities of the hair shaft.

Abnormalities of the hair shaft are varied and often confusing. They do require accurate recognition, which can be helpful in the diagnosis and management of a hair disorder, or in the detection of underlying disease. A reliable evaluation of hair shaft abnormality is dependent on familiarity with the vast structural variations in normal hair, the hair growth cycle, and the changes produced by weathering. These structural abnormalities can be congenital or acquired, and some are associated with hair fragility. The classification used here has the advantage of simplicity and is keyed to easy re…

Permanent waving and straightening of hair.

A significant number of consumers use products to curl or straighten their hair. These products function by chemically breaking and reforming keratin disulfide bonds. The most popular waving products contain salts of thioglycolic acid to break the bonds and hydrogen peroxide to reform them. Straighteners generally rely on high alkalinity to break the bonds and reform them with acid. Problems with permanent waving are usually due to overtreatment or undertreatment of the hair rather than allergy or irritation. Straighteners can be irritating because of their high alkalinity and can seriously da…

Hair and scalp disorders in blacks.

Hair and scalp disorders in blacks and the properties of hair in blacks that make it behave differently are described. Hair disorders commonly seen now are the result of permanent and relaxer damage, heat, and traction alopecias. Presently, the most common scalp disorders in blacks are keloidal folliculitis and dissecting cellulitis of the scalp. Treatment modalities for these disorders are reviewed.

Acquired structural defects of the hair.

Acquired hair shaft abnormalities resembling genetic trichorrhexis nodosa were seen in two patients. Selenium shampoo and bacterial infection with trichomycosis axillaris may have been the contributing factors. There is a possibility that strongyloides larvae caused trichonodosis in one patient.

The genetics of human hair growth.

The regulation of human hair growth is one of the most mysterious of biologic events. Genetic factors are responsible for the density, length, color and texture of hair. Heredity disorders can affect either hair alone, hair and other ectodermal structures, or can be pansystemic. This paper considers all heredity disorders which affect human hair growth. These disorders are divided into three categories: 1) the dysmorphic syndromes; 2) the modifier gene abnormalities and 3) the single major gene abnormalities. The disorders in these categories are listed, along with the mode of inheritance, cau…

ON THE PIGMENT OF THE NEGRO'S SKIN AND HAIR.

The pigmentary granules of the negro's skin and hair can be freed in several ways from the cells in which they are lodged and collected in any desired amount. As thus obtained, these granules are found to be insoluble in dilute alkalies, dilute hydrochloric acid (hot or cold), alcohol, or other organic solvents when applied in the order named. If, after they have been subjected to the action of dilute hydrochloric acid, they are again treated with dilute alkalies, they are found to give up their pigment, and, on the continued application of heat, the granules dissolve entirely in the alkaline …

Vitamins and hair: Sham or science?

There has been growing interest in supplements and hair care products beyond standard medical treatments to improve hair health. Vitamins are essential micronutrients required to maintain homeostasis in the body and are essential for hair growth. There is robust literature documenting vitamin deficiencies in patients with hair disorders such as alopecia areata and telogen effluvium; however, there is limited scientific backing to understand whether vitamin supplementation in healthy individuals has a tangible impact on hair health. We have reviewed the evidence given that clinical trials are l…

Management of Facial Hair in Women.

Facial hair in women generally is considered to be unwanted. The presence of facial hair in women and its associated conditions, treatmens options, and management strategies are not commonly discussed in most medical care settings. The United States military, which includes more than 220,000 active-duty female service members, has strict and specific grooming standards, which for many years have been a hot topic focused primarily on male service members. Facial hair in women is not addressed in military grooming standards across the services, but one can postulate that the expectation is for w…
