Tongue coating: its characteristics and role in intra-oral halitosis and general health-a review.

Tongue coating (TC), a grayish-white deposit on the tongue, is the main cause of intra-oral halitosis (IOH), a socially unacceptable condition. This review covers the general features of TC, including its formation and the factors that influence it. Volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) are the principal elements of IOH, and TC and periodontal diseases are the two main sources of VSCs. This review covers the relationship between VSCs, TC, and periodontal disease. We comprehensively discuss the methods employed to quantify TC, its microbial composition, its influence on general health and its import…

Photodynamic therapy as a novel treatment for halitosis in adolescents: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Halitosis is a common problem that affects a large portion of the population worldwide. The origin of this condition is oral in 90% and systemic in 10% of cases. The unpleasant odor is mainly the result of volatile sulfur compounds produced by Gram-negative bacteria. However, it has recently been found that anaerobic Gram-positive bacteria also produce hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in the presence of amino acids, such as cysteine. Light, both with and without the use of chemical agents, has been used to induce therapeutic and antimicrobial effects. In photodynamic therapy, the antimicrobi…

Evaluation of the use of a peppermint mouth rinse for halitosis by girls studying in Tehran high schools.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Oral malodor is one of the most common complaints among dental patients. It often creates serious personal and social embarrassment for the afflicted individual. Therefore, a dentist must be able to diagnose the etiology of halitosis and treat it or refer an individual to a specialist. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of halitosis and the effect of a peppermint mouth rinse on it. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was performed in two steps. At the first step, in a cross-sectional study, 504 students who were 14-18 years old were examined to define the s…

Psychosocial burden of halitosis: association between volatile sulfur compounds and quality of life in adults.

Halitosis, commonly known as bad breath, is a highly prevalent condition often associated with volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) produced by oral anaerobic bacteria. While intraoral halitosis is the most frequent type, its psychosocial impact remains underexplored in terms of its correlation with objective diagnostic markers. This study investigated the association between VSC concentrations and halitosis-related quality of life using the Halitosis Associated Life-Quality Test (HALT). In this cross-sectional study, 40 adults self-reporting halitosis were assessed using OralChroma™, a portable g…

Prevalence and determinants of self-reported halitosis in Saudi Arabia: a nationwide cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVES: Halitosis, or oral malodor, is a common condition with important psychosocial consequences. Self-reported halitosis (SRH) reflects perceived oral malodor rather than objectively confirmed halitosis and remains insufficiently studied in Saudi Arabia. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of SRH among Saudi adults and to examine its associations with demographic, systemic, and oral health-related factors. METHODS: A nationwide cross-sectional survey was conducted between February and June 2025 using a 38-item self-administered web-based questionnaire developed from previous l…

Case-control study related to the use of L-cysteine in the differential diagnosis of oral halitosis.

Oral halitosis is characterized by a foul, unpleasant breath that emanates from the oral cavity due to local or systemic conditions. Approximately 90% of offensive odors are caused by volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs). L-cysteine, used as a test solution to control bad breath, induces the formation of VSCs and serves as a preliminary rinse. The study aim was to investigate the effectiveness of L-cysteine solution in differentiating the origin of oral halitosis using a gas chromatography apparatus. Methods: In total, 37 patients with an average age of 49.56 years were evaluated and divided into …

Effectiveness of lasers and aPDT in elimination of intraoral halitosis: a systematic review based on clinical trials.

In recent years, there has been increasing interest in research showing positive results in antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) and laser therapy (LT) in dentistry. The authors of this review tried to answer the question: "Is the effectiveness of lasers and aPDT in the elimination of intraoral halitosis possible?" For this purpose, the electronic database of PubMed and Cochrane Library were searched until September 2021 using a combination of different keywords: (bad breath OR fetor ex ore OR halitosis OR oral malodor) AND (laser OR PDT OR PACT OR photodynamic inactivation OR photodynami…

Characterization of oral bacteria in the tongue coating of patients with halitosis using 16S rRNA analysis.

There are many studies on the relationship between the tongue coating and halitosis, but few have evaluated the bacterial community present in the tongue coating. This study identified bacteria in the tongue coating in individuals with and without halitosis using 16S rRNA analysis. Forty subjects (mean age, 46.1 ± 15.8 years) who visited the halitosis clinic at the University Dental Hospital between 2016 and 2017 were divided into halitosis (n = 32) and non-halitosis (n = 8) groups according to results from an organoleptic test (OT). Additional measurements via gas chromatography (GC) and the …

Periodontal diseases as a source of halitosis: a review of the evidence and treatment approaches for dentists and dental hygienists.

Bad breath (halitosis) is an important social complaint. In most cases (≥90%), the cause of halitosis can be found within the oral cavity. Under this circumstance, the term oral malodor applies. It affects both healthy and periodontally diseased individuals. Oral malodor is mainly caused by a microbial degradation of both sulfur-containing and nonsulfur-containing amino acids into volatile, bad-smelling gases. Anaerobic gram-negative bacteria, the same species that have been linked to periodontal diseases, are especially involved in this process, explaining why clinicians often associate oral …

An objective assessment of halitosis in children with adenoid vegetation during pre- and post-operative period.

OBJECTIVES: Although most specialists in otorhinolaryngology and pediatrics find halitosis to be a common problem in children with adenoid hypertrophy, there are no objective data on this topic in the literature. Whether adenoid hypertrophy is a risk factor for halitosis or whether halitosis is a sign of adenoid hypertrophy remains unclear. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate whether children diagnosed with adenoid hypertrophy have a higher probability of halitosis than do children in the normal population and whether adenoidectomy can decrease oral malodor. METHODS: Forty children…

The effect of a chewing-intensive, high-fiber diet on oral halitosis: A clinical controlled study.

Tongue coating is the most common cause of oral halitosis and eating results in its reduction. Only limited data are available on the effect of different food items on tongue coating and halitosis. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of a single consumption of food with high fiber content versus low fiber content on halitosis parameters. Based on a randomized clinical cross-over study, 20 subjects were examined over a period of 2.5 hours after consumption of a high-fiber and a low-fiber meal. The determination of volatile sulfur compounds (VSC) was performed using a …
