BACKGROUND: Visible skin diseases affecting the face and hands-crucial for non-verbal communication and social interaction-can deeply impact psychological well-being. Beyond physical symptoms, their visibility often affects self-esteem and social functioning, contributing to high rates of depression and anxiety. While facial dermatoses have been extensively studied, few investigations have explored the psychological impact of visible localization in other dermatoses.
OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of depression and anxiety in patients with visible skin diseases, identify associated fac

Cidofovir is an antiviral nucleotide analogue with relatively new treatment capacities for dermatological conditions, specifically verruca vulgaris caused by human papilloma virus infection. In a 10-year old boy with severe verruca vulgaris recalcitrant to multiple therapies, topical 1% cidofovir applied daily for eight weeks proved to be an effective treatment with no adverse side effects. This case report, in conjunction with multiple published reports, suggests that topical 1% cidofovir is a safe and effective treatment for viral warts in pediatric patients.

INTRODUCTION: Onychomycosis is the fungal infection of the nail plate by dermatophytes, yeasts and nondermatophyte molds. The treatment of onychomycosis poses many challenges due to low initial cure rates and a high rate of relapse and recurrence. Oral therapy is limited by adverse events and drug-drug interactions, whereas topical therapy has limited penetrance through the nail plate.
AREAS COVERED: New and reformulated drugs are in development for the treatment of onychomycosis. Experimental molecules include both oral and topical azole molecules, topical reformulations of terbinafine, the

INTRODUCTION: Onychomycosis is common in immunocompromised patients, but emerging species have been verified, thereby modifying the epidemiological profile of this mycosis. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate clinical and mycological profile of onychomycosis among HIV/AIDS patients.
METHODS: Clinical samples were collected and processed for direct examination, and cultures were maintained at a temperature of 30 °C and 37 °C for 15 days.
RESULTS: Out of 100 patients, 32 had onychomycosis. The etiological agents isolated were Candida albicans, C. parapsilosis, C. tropicalis, C. guillie

The palmoplantar keratodermas (PPKs) are a large group of genodermatoses comprising nearly 60 genetically distinct diseases. They are characterized by hyperkeratosis on the palms and soles with or without extrapalmoplantar hyperkeratotic lesions. Focal PPK is one of the hallmarks of pachyonychia congenita, a rare autosomal dominant disorder resulting from mutations in the keratin genes KRT6A, KRT6B, KRT16 or KRT17. Recently, in-frame deletion mutations of KRT6C have been identified in three families with focal PPK with slight or no nail changes. We report here a novel KRT6C mutation identified

Lichen planus (LP) and lichen nitidus (LN) present with varied morphology on the palms and soles. We present four unusual cases of palmoplantar LP and LN manifesting as hyperkeratotic plaques with pits. The diagnosis was confirmed histologically. Subtle features like presence of violaceous border suggests LP and plugs within the pits suggest LN.

Onycodystrophies are common problems in dermatologic practice. About 50% of dystrophic nails have a fungal cause, so it is very important to establish a correct diagnosis before treatment. In this article we relate the usefulness of an easydoing exam, free from pain, cheap and sensible. This exam is the histopathology of the nail keratin or nail clipping.

BACKGROUND: Onychomycosis is the most common nail disease in adults. Periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) stain has been considered the most sensitive method for diagnosis. By comparing originally stained PAS slides (i.e. without repeating PAS) with newly stained Grocott methenamine-silver (GMS) slide, D'Hue et al. concluded that GMS is superior to PAS. We conducted a similar study with the addition of repeating PAS stain and compared the newly stained PAS and GMS slides in tandem.
METHODS: We performed both PAS and GMS stains on 30 clinically suspected onychomycosis cases. The presence or absence of f

We report onychomycosis caused by Candida parapsilosis in a 35-day-old premature infant. To our knowledge, this represents the youngest instance of an isolated lesion of the nail plate without involvement of glabrous skin, caused by C. parapsilosis in this age group to be reported in the literature.

Contact dermatitis of the nail unit is not rare. The most common allergens are found in nail cosmetics such as enamel, sculptured nails, and preformed plastic tips. Toluene sulfonamide formaldehyde resin, acrylates, and ethylcyanoacrylate are the most common allergens. Along with a proper clinical history focusing on nail practices, a thorough understanding of the common allergens and patch testing are necessary to diagnose contact dermatitis. A discussion of the common allergens and irritants relevant to the nail unit will be presented.

Prescribing habits in South Asian countries have been subjected to some scrutiny.1-6 Most studies conclude that the quality of prescribing is poor, with overuse of antimicrobials and irrational use of fixed-dose combination therapy, particularly in the private sector.1 Prescriptions for multiple drugs are the rule rather than the exception, with up to seven items being prescribed for a single disease entity. Analgesics, anti-inflammatories and drugs of uncertain pharmacologic efficacy, such as vitamins, minerals and glucose water, are also frequently prescribed.
