Limb deficiency disorders are rare, etiologically heterogeneous skeletal dysplasias that occur as an isolated anomaly or as a part of a syndrome. The term limb deficiency incorporates both absence and size reduction of any of the 120 human limb bones, with around 205 identified abnormalities. Congenital absence of tibia is a rare and severe lower limb malformation with an incidence of approximately 1:1,000,000 live births. Absence of tibia with ectrodactyly (lobster claw deformity) or tibial hemimelia with split hand/foot malformation (TH-SHFM) or Gollop-Wolfgang complex is a rarer malformatio

In the vast world of skin diseases, viral skin disorders account for a significant percentage. Most viral skin diseases present with an exanthem (skin rash) and, oftentimes, an accompanying enanthem (lesions involving the mucosal membrane). In this article, the various viral skin diseases are explored, including viral childhood exanthems (measles, rubella, erythema infectiosum, and roseola), herpes viruses (herpes simplex virus, varicella zoster virus, Kaposi sarcoma herpes virus, viral zoonotic infections [orf, monkeypox, ebola, smallpox]), and several other viral skin diseases, such as human

Despite many treatment advances, metastatic breast cancer remains an incurable disease and is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Europe. Capecitabine has become a standard treatment option for metastatic breast cancer, as a single agent or in combination. Hand-foot syndrome and diarrhoea are the most frequently reported side effects, while capecitabine-related ileitis is very rare. Deficiency of dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase activity leads to severe toxicities after administration of 5-fluorouracil or its prodrugs. We report two cases of patients with metastatic breast cance…

Patients with diabetes mellitus may encounter various musculoskeletal complications. Typical manifestations can be seen in the hand, such as limited joint mobility, flexor tendon synovitis, Dupuytren's contracture and carpal tunnel syndrome. Humeral periarthropathy is also more frequent. The most serious complications can occur in the form of diabetic foot, which may lead to severe deformities and disability. Diabetic amyotrophy and muscle infarction are more rare complications. While osteopenia has a well recognized association with type I diabetes mellitus, this probably is not true for type

Ablepharon-Macrostomia syndrome (AMS) is a rare collection of findings characterized by absent or hypoplastic eyelids, fusion defects of the mouth with unfused lateral commissures, abnormal ears, ambiguous genitalia, skin differences including dry and coarse skin or redundant folds of skin, and developmental delay. Fewer than 20 patients have been reported to date. These include a parent and two children and a recent report of a father and daughter, therefore suggesting autosomal dominant inheritance. Here we present one additional sporadic case with an expanded phenotype. This patient has mor

Diseases affecting the nail can cause significant distress and interfere with an individual's self-esteem, personal relationships, and professional life. Often, hand and foot function is adversely affected. Certain diseases are characterized by accelerated nail growth while others show a decrease. In this review, drugs known to influence the growth rate of nails are examined, highlighting their potential use as adjunctive therapy in the treatment of nail disease. This approach, described recently in the context of the yellow nail syndrome,(1) may be extended to other common disorders such as n

HOX genes play a fundamental role in the development of the vertebrate central nervous system, axial skeleton, limbs, gut, urogenital tract and external genitalia, but it is only in the last 4 years that mutations in two of the 39 human HOX genes have been shown to cause congenital malformations; HOXD13, which is mutated in synpolydactyly, and HOXA13, which is mutated in Hand-Foot-Genital syndrome. Here we review the mutations already identified in these two genes, consider how these mutations may act, and discuss the possibility that further mutations remain to be discovered both in developme

Four patients with Prader-Willi syndrome, diagnosed in the neonatal period and followed during the first year of life, are reported. There were three males and one female. All four patients presented with hypotonia and distinct craniofacial dysmorphism. Prometaphase chromosome analysis showed interstitial deletion of 15q in all of them. The placentae and umbilical cords were examined in three of the patients and found normal. Electromyography done in the neonatal period suggested primary myopathy. Height, weight and head circumference were normal at birth in all patients. Hand and foot measure

In the course of rheumatoid arthritis, changes to tendons occur in different areas. This can lead to rupture if not prevented at an early stage. In particular, regions with extreme joint thickness, high mechanical wear and tear and narrow regions present a higher risk of synovitis. This primarily affects the tendons of the hand, where the extensor digitorum minimus tendon and the extensor and flexor pollicis tendons are most at risk. There is a high possibility of rotator cuff lesion in the shoulder area during the course of a secondary synovitis dependent raised shoulder, or by bursitis or te

Ring chromosomes represent a rare type of chromosomal anomaly that can lead to multiple malformations. Although rings may occur with any chromosome, ring chromosome 21 is of particular interest due to the association of this chromosome with Down syndrome. Individuals with a ring chromosome 21, containing duplicated material, typically have a phenotype consistent with Down syndrome. We report an infant with a ring chromosome 21 containing a duplication of most of the long arm, including the Down syndrome critical region [46,XX,r(21)(p11.2q22.3)]. Fluorescence in situ hybridization analyses of t

McKusick-Kaufman syndrome (MKS) is an autosomal recessive multiple malformation syndrome characterized by hydrometrocolpos (HMC) and postaxial polydactyly (PAP). We report a case of a female child with MKS who was transferred to the neonatal intensive care unit of Seoul National University Children's Hospital on her 15th day of life for further evaluation and management of an abdominal cystic mass. She underwent abdominal sonography, magnetic resonance imaging, genitography and cystoscopy which confirmed HMC with a transverse vaginal septum. X-rays of the hand and foot showed bony fusion of th

Polydactyly is characterized by the manifestation of supernumerary digits in the hands and feet. It can be isolated or associated with a genetic syndrome. Based on the location of duplication, it is categorized as preaxial, postaxial, or central. The latter is a rare abnormality, comprising approximately 6% of cases. There is a paucity in the literature regarding this congenital anomaly and its overall management. Nonoperative treatment is generally unsuccessful in managing symptoms such as excessive width, abnormal digit alignment, and growth. Though surgical management addresses the individu

Congenital tibial deficiency is a rare condition characterized by partial to complete absence of the tibia, an intact but frequently overgrown fibula, variable degrees of knee deformity and function, and an abnormal equinovarus foot. It can occur in isolation but also presents concurrently with other orthopaedic anomalies and syndromic conditions. Among these, congenital abnormalities of the hand and femur are most commonly observed. Many theories exist regarding its etiology and some genetic mutations have been identified; however, the underlying mechanism remains unknown. The prognosis and t

We report a large-scale outbreak of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) in France. As at 28 September 2021, 3,403 cases have been reported (47% higher than in 2018-19). We prospectively analysed 210 clinical samples; 190 (90.5%) were enterovirus-positive. Most children presented with atypical HFMD. Coxsackievirus (CV)A6 (49.5%; 94/190) was predominant; no enterovirus A71 was detected. Dermatological and neurological complications of HFMD justify prospective syndromic and virological surveillance for early detection of HFMD outbreaks and identification of associated types.

BACKGROUND: Apert syndrome is characterised by the presence of craniosynostosis, midface retrusion and syndactyly of hands and feet, thus, synonymously referred to as acrocephalosyndactyly type I. Considering these multidisciplinary issues, frequently requiring surgical interventions at an early age, deformities of the feet have often been neglected and seem to be underestimated in the management of Apert syndrome. Typical Apert foot features range from complete fusion of the toes and a central nail mass to syndactyly of the second to fifth toe with a medially deviated great toe; however, no c
