Health literacy among Iranian adults: findings from a nationwide population-based survey in 2015.

BACKGROUND: Health literacy is one of the most important determinants of noncommunicable diseases prevention. Health literacy is associated with elevated risks for poorer access to care, adverse health outcomes, and increased hospitalization and health costs. AIMS: This study aimed to determine the level of health literacy among the general adult population in the Islamic Republic of Iran. METHODS: Using a cross-sectional study during 2014-2015 with a multistage cluster sampling approach, we administered a pilot-tested standardized questionnaire to assess different domains of health literacy…

Conditions and Dynamics That Impact Maternal Health Literacy among High Risk Prenatal-Interconceptional Women.

The purpose of the study was to describe conditions and dynamics in the lives of high-risk, low-income, Southern United States prenatal-interconceptional women (n = 37) in a home visiting program that promoted maternal health literacy progression. In the Life Course Health Development (LCHD) Model, conditions were risk and protective factors that impacted health. Dynamics drove the complex, epigenetic relationships between risk and protective factors. Maternal health literacy promotion helped participants address conditions and dynamics to create positive life changes. This research was a retr…

Health Literacy Mediates Racial Disparities in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Knowledge among Chronic Kidney Disease Patients.

Black patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) receive more cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) than other racial groups, and knowledge of CPR influences preferences for care. As limited health literacy disproportionately affects Blacks and contributes to disparities in end-of-life (EOL) care, we investigated whether health literacy mediates racial disparities in CPR knowledge. Black and White adult patients with advanced CKD completed CPR knowledge surveys. Health literacy was assessed using the Rapid Estimate of Adult Literacy in Medicine. Among 149 patients, Black patients were more likel…

Digital health literacy moderates the school sports environment and physical activity pathway among Chinese adolescents: a health equity perspective.

BACKGROUND: Physical inactivity among Chinese adolescents remains a pressing public health concern, with pronounced urban-rural disparities. School sports environments serve as a critical determinant of adolescent physical activity (PA), yet the conditions under which this relationship strengthens or weakens remain insufficiently understood. Digital health literacy (DHL) has emerged as a potential moderator that may amplify or buffer environmental influences on PA behavior. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 2,531 adolescents (Mage = 15.2 ± 1.8 years; 51.3% male) recruited …

Hearing Difficulty, Health Literacy, and Poorer Health Among Adults in the United States: 2016 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Study.

OBJECTIVES: Adults with hearing loss experience poorer health outcomes than their hearing counterparts. As hearing loss becomes more prevalent in the United States, research examining how to reduce health disparities among this population is needed. This study aimed to estimate the associations between hearing loss and each of poor physical and mental health, evaluate health literacy as a mediator of these relationships, and estimate the proportion of cases of poor physical and mental health that are attributable to having lower health literacy among adults with hearing loss. DESIGN: The 2016…

Considering Health Literacy, Health Decision Making, and Health Communication in the Social Networks of Vulnerable New Mothers in Hawai'i: A Pilot Feasibility Study.

Health literacy is understudied in the context of social networks. Our pilot study goal was to consider this research gap among vulnerable, low-income mothers of minority ethnic background in the state of Hawai'i, USA. Recruitment followed a modified snowball sampling approach. First, we identified and interviewed seven mothers ("egos") in a state-sponsored home visiting program. We then sought to interview individuals whom each mother said was part of her health decision-making network ("first-level alters") and all individuals whom the first-level alters said were part of their health decisi…

[Professional Health Literacy Among Midwives - Findings from a Standardised Online Survey Conducted in Bavaria].

BACKGROUND: Womens health literacy before, during and after childbirth is of considerable public health importance. As midwives frequently serve as primary care providers and first professional contacts during this critical stage of life, they are strategically positioned to support and enhance women's health literacy. The effective fulfilment of this role, however, requires a well-developed level of professional health literacy among midwives themselves. Empirical evidence on this construct remains limited. The aim of this study was to provide a systematic assessment of professional health li…

Relationship between extraversion and mental health literacy in Chinese adolescents: a chain mediation model.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Approximately one-quarter of the global population experiences mental disorders, with onset frequently occurring during adolescence. Low mental health literacy (MHL) is a crucial barrier to help-seeking. Although extraversion, social support, and psychological help-seeking all facilitate access to mental health information, their combined and sequential roles in influencing MHL remain underexplored. Using the Capability, Opportunity, Motivation, and Behavior (COM-B) model, this study examined the serial mediating roles of social support and psychological help-seeking in the…

A global measurement tool to assess population health literacy fits all? A critical paper.

Health literacy (HL) is considered by the World Health Organization (WHO) as an important determinant of health and several instruments have been elaborated and adapted to measure this construct. In 2022, a group of researchers started a project aimed at developing a HL assessment instrument with global applicability, based on different versions of the European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire (HLS-EU-Q). This article critically analyses the characteristics of those instruments to help improve health assessment practices and avoiding omitting measurement of locally important information, t…
