Minnesota Electronic Health Record Consortium COVID-19 Project: Informing Pandemic Response Through Statewide Collaboration Using Observational Data.

OBJECTIVE: Robust disease and syndromic surveillance tools are underdeveloped in the United States, as evidenced by limitations and heterogeneity in sociodemographic data collection throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. To monitor the COVID-19 pandemic in Minnesota, we developed a federated data network in March 2020 using electronic health record (EHR) data from 8 multispecialty health systems. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this serial cross-sectional study, we examined patients of all ages who received a COVID-19 polymerase chain reaction test, had symptoms of a viral illness, or received an influe

Vaccine Hesitancy: Causes, Consequences, and a Call to Action.

Vaccine hesitancy reflects concerns about the decision to vaccinate oneself or one's children. There is a broad range of factors contributing to vaccine hesitancy, including the compulsory nature of vaccines, their coincidental temporal relationships to adverse health outcomes, unfamiliarity with vaccine-preventable diseases, and lack of trust in corporations and public health agencies. Although vaccination is a norm in the U.S. and the majority of parents vaccinate their children, many do so amid concerns. The proportion of parents claiming non-medical exemptions to school immunization requir

Perceived Social Support Attenuates the Association between Stress and Health-Related Quality of Life among Adults Experiencing Homelessness.

Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is defined as a multidimensional subjective assessment of one's physical and mental health. Homelessness is associated with numerous stressors that can reduce HRQoL. Social support is defined as the availability of individuals, or resources provided by individuals, to cope with stress. Interpersonal social support may be important in buffering HRQoL from the negative implications of stress. Here, we examine this association in a marginalized group known for high rates of physical and mental health comorbidities: adults experiencing homelessness. Participa

Role of health digital twins in oncology drug development - a primer.

Health Digital Twins (HDTs) have attracted increasing interest as a potential tool for improving both patient care and clinical research, particularly in oncology where clinical trials remain slow, costly, and operationally complex. This primer introduces the concept of digital twins in a form accessible to professionals involved in oncology clinical research and outlines the main components of health digital twins, describes how these systems are generated, and highlights their potential relevance to oncology trials. HDTs are personalized, dynamically updated, predictive, and decision-informi

Gender-based research underscores sex differences in biological processes, clinical disorders and pharmacological interventions.

Earlier research has presumed that the male and female biology is similar in most organs except the reproductive system, leading to major misconceptions in research interpretations and clinical implications, with serious disorders being overlooked or misdiagnosed. Careful research has now identified sex differences in the cardiovascular, renal, endocrine, gastrointestinal, immune, nervous, and musculoskeletal systems. Also, several cardiovascular, immunological, and neurological disorders have shown differences in prevalence and severity between males and females. Genetic variations in the sex

Adult newcomers' perceptions of access to care and differences in health systems after relocation from Syria.

BACKGROUND: In Canada, approximately 13% of the population lives with multiple chronic conditions. Newcomers, including refugees, have the same or higher risk of developing chronic diseases as their host population. In 2015-2016, Canada welcomed almost 40, 000 newcomers from Syria. This study aimed to (1) understand adult newcomer health needs for self-management of non-infectious chronic conditions; and (2) identify strategies to improve access to health care services to meet these needs. METHODS: This study used a qualitative descriptive design. Interviews and focus groups were conducted wi

A participatory evaluation of legal support in the context of health-focused peer advocacy with people who are homeless in London, UK.

Legal problems can be cause and consequence of ill-health and homelessness, necessitating efforts to integrate responses to these challenges. How to respond to legal issues within the context of health services for people who are homeless is though unclear. Groundswell piloted providing legal support to peer advocates (who have current or past experience of homelessness) and clients currently homeless in addition to their health-focused work. A participatory action-research design evaluated the emerging programme. Groundswell staff, both researchers and those involved in service delivery, co-l

Development of a subgenomic clone system for Kyasanur Forest disease virus.

Emerging tropical viruses pose an increasing threat to public health because social, economic and environmental factors such as global trade and deforestation allow for their migration into previously unexposed populations and ecological niches. Among such viruses, Kyasanur Forest disease virus (KFDV) deserves particular recognition because it causes hemorrhagic fever. This work describes the completion of an antiviral testing platform (subgenomic system) for KFDV that could be used to quickly and safely screen compounds capable of inhibiting KFDV replication without the requirement for high c

Anal use of the female condom: does uncertainty justify provider inaction?

Despite limited safety data and the absence of efficacy data, several studies have reported that the female condom is being used for anal sex by men who have sex with men. We describe providers' awareness of female condom use during anal sex among their clients and their experiences in counseling clients. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 78 health-care providers recruited from various health-care delivery systems in New York City: a family planning agency, a sexually transmitted infection agency, a hospital-based obstetrics and gynecology clinic, and two community-based AIDS servic

Global health initiative investments and health systems strengthening: a content analysis of global fund investments.

BACKGROUND: Millions of dollars are invested annually under the umbrella of national health systems strengthening. Global health initiatives provide funding for low- and middle-income countries through disease-oriented programmes while maintaining that the interventions simultaneously strengthen systems. However, it is as yet unclear which, and to what extent, system-level interventions are being funded by these initiatives, nor is it clear how much funding they allocate to disease-specific activities - through conventional 'vertical-programming' approach. Such funding can be channelled to one

Building love and justice, ending harms: a framework for abolishing the tobacco and nicotine industry.

The tobacco and nicotine industry, embedded in colonial exploitation and racialised harm, remains a leading cause of preventable disease, death, and intergenerational trauma. This article presents a transformative abolitionist public health framework, grounded in Indigenous-led principles of sovereignty, truth-telling, love, and justice. It aims to dismantle the structural drivers of harm perpetuated by the industry. We centre abolition as a moral and ethical imperative, but also as a practical necessity to uphold the human right to health, restore Indigenous authority, and eliminate systems t

Manitoba's Provincial Travel Nurse Team: A Unique Staffing Model for Nurses.

The growing demand in providing healthcare services combined with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on healthcare staffing has created a situation where the supply of available nurses is not keeping up with the demand with increasing competition for limited resources. Rural and remote locations face unique challenges in recruiting and retaining skilled staff. Manitoba's Provincial Travel Nurse Team (PTNT) was created as an alternative staffing model with flexible employment options to retain nurses in the public health system. The PTNT's early success has demonstrated that this model can su

Transforming faith-based food pantries in the South Bronx into multiservice health centers.

Could faith-based food pantries evolve into vital multiservice health centers? In the United States, the South Bronx is the poorest urban congressional district in New York State and experiences significant food insecurity alongside pronounced public health disparities. While food pantries provide nutritional support temporarily, they rarely address the complex social determinants of health that contribute to chronic disease. This paper examines the feasibility, opportunities, and systemic barriers associated with transforming faith-based food operations into integrated, culturally sensitive h

Host perceptions of an undergraduate semester abroad: strengthening partnerships in global health education.

OBJECTIVES: As global health education becomes more embedded in university curricula, the availability of experiential learning opportunities in this field has expanded as well. These programmes offer students valuable exposure to diverse cultural perspectives and help develop essential competencies in global health. However, concerns have arisen regarding the persistence of colonial-era dynamics, power imbalances and the potential negative impacts on host organisations in low- and middle-income countries. Much of the existing literature on this topic centres on short-term medical student expe
