Age-related hearing loss: current research.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Significant changes in population demographics with respect to age have taken place, and this pattern is expected to continue. The aging of the population underscores the importance of finding ways to improve the quality of life of the elderly. Most of the elderly population, however, suffers from progressive hearing loss: 60% of people older than 70 years have hearing loss of at least 25 dB. Age-related hearing loss affects the quality of life, not only of the elderly but also of their families and loved ones. RECENT FINDINGS: The research goal in this field is to elucidat

Mechanisms of the Hearing-Cognition Relationship.

This review provides a description of age-related changes in hearing and cognition, the relationship between hearing and cognition, and several potential mechanisms that underlie the relationship. Several studies have shown a significant relationship between peripheral hearing loss and cognitive impairment/decline but other studies have not. Furthermore, poor performance on measures of central auditory processing has been significantly associated with cognitive impairment. Important to understanding these relationships are the nature of the underlying mechanisms. Possible mechanisms are overdi

Hearing loss associated with the modifier of deaf waddler (mdfw) locus corresponds with age-related hearing loss in 12 inbred strains of mice.

The modifier of deaf waddler (mdfw) and age-related hearing loss (Ahl) loci were both discovered as inbred strain polymorphisms that affect hearing loss in mice. Both loci map to the same position on chromosome (Chr) 10. The mdfw locus interacts epistatically with the deaf waddler (dfw) mutation on Chr 6, and the Ahl locus is a major contributor to AHL in several inbred strains. To investigate the possibility of allelism, we examined the correspondence of mdfw and Ahl phenotypes among 12 inbred mouse strains. The effects of strain-specific mdfw alleles on hearing loss were assessed in dfw2J/+

Hearing function after betahistine therapy in patients with Ménière's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Preventing or reversing hearing loss is challenging in Ménière's disease. Betahistine, as a histamine agonist, has been tried in controlling vertigo in patients with Ménière's disease, but its effectiveness on hearing problems is not known. OBJECTIVE: To examine the effect of betahistine on hearing function in not-previously-treated patients with Ménière's disease and to define possible contributors in this regard. METHODS: A total of 200 not-previously-treated patients with definite unilateral Ménière's disease received betahistine by mouth (initial dose, 16mg three times a da

Hearing Loss in the Elderly.

Presbycusis, or age-related hearing loss (ARHL), is the result of physiologic and pathologic changes associated with advancing age. ARHL presents typically with a high-frequency hearing loss, which contributes to greater trouble hearing consonants within words. Consonants convey the bulk of meaning within a word, and this loss of linguistic information results in complaints associated with ARHL. Hearing aids and cochlear implants significantly improve the lives of older adults with hearing loss, in particular, those with depression and dementia. Successful current research in gene therapy, pha

Histopathology and molecular genetics of hearing loss in the human.

Hearing loss is among the most common disabilities of man. It has been estimated that over 70 million individuals in the world are hearing impaired with pure tone averages greater than 55 dB. A genetic etiology is thought to be responsible for over half of early onset hearing loss and at least one third of late onset hearing loss. In this review, examples of the histopathology of the inner ear in known genetic syndromes in the human will be presented in order to provide a structural basis for understanding molecular mechanisms of development and maintenance in the inner ear, and to serve the e

Complete restoration of auditory impairment in a pediatric case of Cogan's syndrome: report of a rare case with long-term follow-up and literature review.

Cogan's syndrome is characterized by interstitial keratitis, vestibular impairment and hearing loss, commonly bilateral. Many patients, especially children, experience a delay in proper diagnosis which may delay treatment and thus impact on prognosis of hearing restoration. Less than 10 pediatric cases of Cogan's syndrome have been reported in literature and only five of them were reported with long-term follow-up. We report an extremely rare pediatric case of Cogan's syndrome typical form with long-term follow-up and evaluation of hearing impairment. Cogan's syndrome must be familiar to otorh

Late-onset hearing loss was not observed among preschool- aged children with prenatal Zika virus exposure: An analysis of the Microcephaly Epidemic Research Group Pediatric Cohort (2015-2019).

Zika virus (ZIKV) infection during pregnancy can lead to Congenital Zika Syndrome (CZS), with significant impacts on early childhood development. This study aimed to analyze the natural history of hearing loss in children with CZS during their first four years of life. Data were collected from the Microcephaly Epidemic Research Group Pediatric Cohort in Pernambuco, Brazil. We investigated whether children with prenatal ZIKV exposure could develop late-onset hearing loss and whether those with preserved auditory thresholds at birth might exhibit deficits in functional hearing or primary languag

FRMPD4, a causal gene for intellectual disability and epilepsy, is associated with X-linked non-syndromic hearing loss.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the phenotypic spectrum of disease-associated genes is essential for accurate diagnosis and targeted therapy. FRMPD4 (FERM and PDZ Domain Containing 4) has previously been associated with intellectual disability and epilepsy. However, its potential role in non-syndromic hearing loss has not been explored. METHODS: We performed genetic analysis in two unrelated families presenting with non-syndromic sensorineural hearing loss, identifying maternally inherited missense variants in FRMPD4. Clinical phenotyping included audiological assessment and evaluation for neurodev

Epidemiological studies on hearing impairment with reference to genetic factors in Sichuan, China.

Hearing impairment is the most common disorder of sensorineural function and is an economically and socially important cause of human morbidity. A large-scale epidemiological survey of hearing loss was conducted with 126,876 unselected subjects (63,741 male and 63,135 female) from Sichuan, China. The overall prevalence of hearing loss was 3.28% (4,164 of 126,876), and the prevalence increased with age, reaching 12.8% (1,465 of 11,421) at 60 years of age. In 73.03% of all cases (3,041 of 4,164), the hearing loss was sensorineural, and in 20.39% (849 of 4,164), it was conductive; the remaining c
