Intestinal Helminths in relationship to Chronic Diarrhoea in Human Immunodeficiency Virus-Seropositive Adults in Enugu.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and intestinal helminthiasis are common conditions in Nigeria. Chronic diarrhoea is a common manifestation of acquired immune deficiency syndrome ( AIDS). Helminths such as Strongyloides stercoralis and Trichuris trichiura may cause chronic diarrhoea especially in immunocompromised individuals. In order to determine whether any relationship exists between HIV infection and intestinal helminthiasis, stool samples from all HIV seropositive adults (with or without diarrhoea) admitted to the medical wards of the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, …

Prevalence and associated factors of soil transmitted helminthes among pregnant women attending antenatal care in Maytsebri primary hospital, North Ethiopia.

OBJECTIVES: Soil-transmitted helminthes are among the most common infections worldwide and affect the poorest and most deprived communities. A health facility based cross-sectional study was conducted among pregnant women attending at Maytsebri primary hospital. Data was entered and analysed using SPSS version 20 software. Multivariate analyses were used to identify determinant factors associated with soil transmitted helminthiasis. A total of 448 pregnant women were examined microscopically with a Katokatz technique for parasitological study to each women. RESULTS: Out of the total 448 pregn…

Attitudes towards helminthic infection in the Jirel population of eastern Nepal.

Intestinal worm infections, including roundworm, hookworm, and whipworm, are major international health concerns, affecting approximately one fourth of the world's population. Many intervention schemes have been attempted to control these infections in heavily exposed populations, but success has been limited because individuals are readily reinfected upon renewed exposure. Few data are available concerning people's health beliefs about soil-transmitted helminthic infections in such populations. The purpose of this study was to assess health beliefs about common helminthiasis in a population e…

[Clinical and immunological indicators in patient with viral hepatitis A combined with ascariasis].

The data obtained point to the aggravation of virus hepatitis A time-course in case of a mixed pathology. This may be due to the state of a certain immune deficiency characteristic of parasitic diseases, including helminthiasis. It is also possible that immune deficiency is an inevitable condition for helminths' existance in the host. This suggestion is supported by the fact of helminthic invasion of virus hepatitis patients.

Burden of disease attributable to unsafe drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene in domestic settings: a global analysis for selected adverse health outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Assessments of disease burden are important to inform national, regional, and global strategies and to guide investment. We aimed to estimate the drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH)-attributable burden of disease for diarrhoea, acute respiratory infections, undernutrition, and soil-transmitted helminthiasis, using the WASH service levels used to monitor the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as counterfactual minimum risk-exposure levels. METHODS: We assessed the WASH-attributable disease burden of the four health outcomes overall and disaggregated by region, age, …

Effect of schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminth infections on physical fitness of school children in Côte d'Ivoire.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis are important public health problems in sub-Saharan Africa causing malnutrition, anemia, and retardation of physical and cognitive development. However, the effect of these diseases on physical fitness remains to be determined. METHODOLOGY: We investigated the relationship between schistosomiasis, soil-transmitted helminthiasis and physical performance of children, controlling for potential confounding of Plasmodium spp. infections and environmental parameters (i.e., ambient air temperature and humidity). A cross-sectional survey …

Pathogenesis and Management of Hepatolithiasis: A Report of Two Cases.

Hepatolithiasis or primary intrahepatic stones are prevalent in the Far-East countries such as Korea, Japan and Taiwan. It has been associated with helminthiasis, bacterial infections, environmental and dietary factors. Despite high prevalence of helminthiasis like ascariasis, poor environmental condition and low protein diet, India and Middle-East countries have a low incidence of hepatolithiasis. We report two cases of hepatolithiasis associated with bacterial infections and were surgically managed. The first case is a 45-year-old female presenting with upper abdominal pain and fever. She ha…

The drugs we have and the drugs we need against major helminth infections.

Parasitic worms (helminths) have accompanied humans for thousands of years and, still today, they are pervasive where poverty persists, including large parts of Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific Region. The global strategy for the control of helminth infections is morbidity control and elimination as a public health problem. Regular administration of anthelminthic drugs to at-risk populations (e.g. school-aged children) serves as the backbone of interventions in areas where helminth infections are highly endemic. In this review, we focus on soil-transmitted helminthiasis (ascariasis, hook…

Could control of soil-transmitted helminthic infection influence the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

In May 2001, the World Health Assembly (WHA) estimated that two billion people were infected by soil-transmitted helminths (S-THs) and schistosomiasis, worldwide. The WHA urged member states to recognise that there can be synergy between public health control programmes for S-THs, schistosomiasis and other diseases. This is particularly relevant to the new dimension created by the HIV/AIDS epidemics in the same impoverished communities and countries where helminthiasis is hyperendemic. Immunological adaptation between humans and parasitic helminths has developed during evolution. Review of 109…

A hundred and thirty patients, including 60 patients with psoriasis concurrent with chronic opisthorchiasis, 40 with psoriasis without helminthiasis, and 30 with chronic opisthorchiasis, and 15 healthy individuals were examined. To evaluate the pancreas, its incretory and excretory functions were studied. In patients with psoriasis concurrent with chronic opisthorchiasis, the pancreatic level of hormones and enzymes was significantly lower than those in patients with psoriasis without helminthiasis. Twelve months after dehelminthization, a follow-up of the parameters of the incretory function …

Mebendazole in parasitic infections other than those caused by soil-transmitted helminths.

Mebendazole, a benzimidazole carbamate compound, is currently in use for human medical practice against soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) and enterobiasis. However, it has been demonstrated that its spectrum of activity is broad and goes beyond those infections. Several studies provide evidence that this drug, taken at higher doses than used for STH and enterobiasis, could be sufficiently effective on some protozoa, nematodes and cestodes.

[Chronobiologic studies of intestinal epithelium in the acute phase of opisthorchiasis].

Acute opisthorchiasis was simulated on 64 golden hamsters to reveal circadian rhythms of mitotic activity in the jejunum, ileum and cecum epithelium, with a maximum amounting to 3 hours. Acute opisthorchiasis modifies the mitotic regimen of the test parts of the intestine, smooths and distorts the rhythm. A conclusion is drawn about the reduced functional-structural reserves of gastrointestinal tract epithelium in helminthiasis in question.

Strongyloides stercoralis hyperinfection associated with impaired intestinal motility disorder.

Infection by Strongyloides stercoralis is a highly prevalent helminthiasis, which is mostly distributed in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Although a substantial number of cases are asymptomatic or paucisymtomatic, severe and life-threatening forms of this infection still occur and not infrequently is lately diagnosed. Gram-negative bacteria septicemia, which frequently accompanies the severe helminthiasis, contributes to the high mortality rate. Severe infection is invariably triggered by any imbalance in the host's immunity, favoring the auto-infective cycle, which increas…
