Bleeding Meckel's diverticulum diagnosed with 99mTc-pertechnetate.

The diagnosis of bleeding Meckel's diverticulum in an 11 year old boy, an 8 year old girl and a 2 1/2 year old boy, was established preoperatively using 99mTc-pertechnetate. These abdominal scannings were of value in the management of patients with rectal bleeding after ruling out other disorders by hematologic tests, usual radiologic studies and endoscopic examinations. To reduce ambiguities, the scanning was performed with the child in a fasting state and a nasogastric tube was led into the stomach to minimize volume and flow of radioactive gastric juice into the intestinal tract. Based on o…

Chronic neutropenia in childhood. Analysis of 16 cases and a review of the literature.

We analyzed the clinical histories and hematologic information concerning 16 persons in whom chronic neutropenia was discovered early in life. Only two of them, those with the lowest mean neutrophil counts, had frequent and severe pyogenic infections. Almost all the infections were caused by Staphylococcus aureus or by enteric microorganisms and involved the skin, respiratory tract or gastrointestinal system. The prognosis in our subjects or in patients described in the literature could not be predicted from the bone marrow morphology, presence or absence of blood monocytosis, pattern of genet

Emerging utility of flow cytometry in the diagnosis of chronic myelomonocytic leukemia.

The diagnosis of many hematologic malignancies has shifted from being based almost exclusively on morphology and clinical data to include ancillary studies such as flow cytometry. This trend has yet to affect the diagnosis of chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML) as flow cytometry, while being integral in the diagnosis of many hematologic malignancies, has no explicit role in the current WHO criteria for CMML. The absence of WHO-determined criteria for flow cytometry in the diagnosis of CMML is not due to a lack of research on the subject over the years. Herein, we review the literature conce

Reactive Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis Secondary to Ovarian Adenocarcinoma: A Rare Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a syndrome of immune hyperactivation and abnormal regulation that causes life-threatening inflammation, is mainly characterized by fever, hepatosplenomegaly, cytopenia, and other symptoms. Reactive HLH (rHLH) is typically secondary to immune deregulation caused by underlying rheumatologic, infectious, or malignant conditions. Malignancy-associated HLH (M-HLH) continues to be a critical health problem worldwide. Most malignancies associated with HLH are hematologic tumors, and M-HLH in non-hematologic tumors very rarely occurs. CASE REPORT:

Bone marrow biopsy findings in brucellosis patients with hematologic abnormalities.

BACKGROUND: Brucellosis can mimic various multisytem diseases, showing wide clinical polymorphism that frequently leads to misdiagnosis and treatment delay, further increasing the complication rates. In this study, we aimed to examine bone marrow biopsy findings in brucellosis cases presenting with hematologic abnormalities. METHODS: Forty-eight brucellosis cases were prospectively investigated. Complaints and physical examination findings of patients were recorded. Patients' complete blood count, routine biochemical tests, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein and serological sc

Urticaria pigmentosa: a clinical, hematopathologic, and serologic study of 30 adults.

Urticaria pigmentosa (UP) is the most common form of cutaneous mastocytosis and may be associated with systemic involvement, most often of the bone marrow. The incidence of systemic involvement is not yet well established, however. To address this question, we subjected a group of 30 adults with histologically proved UP to a retrospective study that included history, physical examination, laboratory tests including cytokine measurements, radiologic examinations, and bone marrow biopsies. The most frequently associated clinical symptoms were recurrent flush episodes in 16 of 30 patients, alcoho

ASVCP guidelines: Allowable total error hematology.

The purpose of this document is to provide total allowable error (TEa ) recommendations for commonly analyzed hematology measurands for veterinary personnel. These guidelines define relevant terminology and highlight considerations specific to hematology measurands. They also provide reasons and guidelines for using TEa in instrument performance evaluation, including recommendations for when the total observed error exceeds the recommended TEa . Biological variation-based quality specifications are briefly discussed. The appendix describes the derivation of the hematology TEa recommendations a

Acute myocardial infarction in myeloproliferative neoplasms.

Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) are a heterogeneous group of hematologic malignancies characterized by an abnormal proliferation of cells of the myeloid lineage. Affected individuals are at increased risk for cardiovascular and thrombotic events. Myocardial infarction (MI) may be one of the earliest clinical manifestations of MPNs or may be a thrombotic complication that develops during the natural course of the disease. In the present review, we examine the epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical presentation, and management of MI in MPNs based on the available literature. Moreover, we revie

Problems in diagnosis of iron deficiency anemia.

Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency in children and is widespread in childhood populations throughout the world. Although many sophisticated tests have been devised for the diagnosis of iron deficiency the most reliable criterion of iron deficiency anemia is the hemoglobin response to an adequate therapeutic trial of iron. Following the reticulocytosis peak hemoglobin rises at an average of 0.25 to 0.4 g/dl/day and hematocrit at a rate of 1% per day. If the response to iron falls short of this response other causes of the anemia should be sought by detailed hematologic in

[Systematic screening for Sjögren's syndrome in patients with various blood diseases].

A Sjögren's syndrom was looked for systematically in 154 hematological patients, half of them with lymphoproliferative disorders, by means of three current diagnosis methods: the Schirmer's test, the tear lysozyme assay, and the salivary immunoglobulin assay. These tests, poorly specific, are frequently abnormal, but the coexistence of the three abnormalities in the same patient makes the diagnosis highly probable. This corresponded to 4 patients. Taking into account the other diagnostic methods, the diagnosis was considered as possible or probable in 7 patients, and certain in 3 of them. This

Retrospective study of the prevalence and progression of monoclonal gammopathy in HIV positive versus HIV negative patients.

The significance of HIV associated paraproteins and their risk of progression to hematological malignancies remains unclear. We compared the development of hematological malignancies among HIV+ (n = 266) and HIV- (n = 537) patients with monoclonal gammopathies. HIV+ and HIV- patients with a positive serum protein electrophoresis test (SPEP) were studied. HIV+ SPEP+ were more likely to have faint and oligoclonal paraproteins (F-SPEP) and less likely to have discrete bands (D-SPEP) compared to HIV- SPEP+. The incidence of hematological malignancies was significantly lower in the HIV+ compared to

Assessment of the physical fitness status of patients with hematological malignancies qualified for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a procedure commonly used in the treatment of various hematological disorders with the aim of curing the patient or prolonging life. The vast majority of patients must have antineoplastic therapy before HSCT, which can result in weight loss, sarcopenia or cachexia. Additionally, there is a high risk of malnutrition and physical deterioration during HSCT. By assessing physical fitness prior to HSCT, a physical therapist can individualize an exercise program, which in turn may speed up recovery after HSCT. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the
