Reducing falls and resulting hip fractures among older women.

SCOPE OF THE PROBLEM: Fall-related injuries are the leading cause of injury deaths and disabilities among older adults (i.e., persons aged > or = 65 years). The most serious fall injury is hip fracture; one half of all older adults hospitalized for hip fracture never regain their former level of function. In 1996, a total of 340,000 hospitalizations for hip fracture occurred among persons aged > or = 65 years, and 80% of these admissions occurred among women. From 1988 to 1996, hip fracture hospitalization rates for women aged > or = 65 years increased 23%. ETIOLOGIC OR RISK FACTORS: Risk fac

The effects of forefoot varus on hip and knee kinematics during single-leg squat.

Foot misalignments, such as forefoot varus (FV), have been associated with musculoskeletal injuries in the proximal joints of the lower limb. Previous theories suggested that this association occurs because FV influences knee and hip kinematics during closed kinetic chain activities. However, research on the effects of FV in the kinematics of the lower limb is very scarce. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare the knee and hip kinematics between subjects with and without FV during a functional weight-bearing activity. Forty-six healthy adolescents were divided into two groups: gr

Concomitant hip and distal radius fractures.

BACKGROUND: Concomitant ipsilateral hip and distal radius fractures are uncommon, and little research has been published about these injuries. Our aim was to evaluate the characteristics and results of treatment for these injuries. METHODS: Between 2006 and 2012, 35 concomitant hip and distal radius fractures were identified, comprising the study group. The characteristics and results of treatment for these injuries were evaluated and analyzed. Another matched control group with isolated hip fractures was collected for comparison of patient characteristics, fall mechanism, fracture pattern, b

Irreducible posterior fracture-dislocation of the hip associated with an ipsilateral femoral shaft fracture: A case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Ipsilateral fractures of the shaft of the femur combined with hip dislocations are extremely rare injuries, presenting a difficult diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. Diagnosis of hip dislocation is often delayed, due to the focus on femoral fracture. CASE PRESENTATION: This article presents a case never described before of a 19-year-old patient who sustained this unusual combination of injuries as a result of a road traffic accident. The patient had an irreducible posterior hip fracture-dislocation associated with an ipsilateral femoral shaft fracture. Closed reduction attemp

Association Between Hip Rotation and Activation of the Quadriceps and Gluteus Maximus in Male Runners.

BACKGROUND: Although running can provide health benefits, knee joint injuries are frequently reported by recreational runners. To date, the precise mechanism responsible for anterior knee pain remains elusive, and the source of symptoms is debated. Inconsistencies are found in the literature pertaining to the relationship between hip mechanics and activity in the quadriceps and gluteus maximus (GMax) during the running gait. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: To investigate the correlations between hip rotation and the activity in the quadriceps and GMax during running. We hypothesized that increased hip ro

Distal-to-proximal progression of apophyseal injuries with age in male youth academy footballers: a two-season prospective cohort study of 16,024 player-seasons.

OBJECTIVES: Youth football players are vulnerable to apophyseal injuries, which can have long-term consequences for health and performance. The objective was to assess the incidence, severity and burden of apophyseal injuries among U9-U21 academy football players over two seasons. METHODS: Time-loss injuries and match/training exposure were tracked in male academy football players (U9-U21) from Premier League and Category One Academies. Apophyseal injuries were identified in a cohort of 16 024 player-seasons using Orchard Sports Injury Classification System (OSICS) codes, and their incidence,

Acetabular component migration following traumatic total hip dislocation. A case report.

A 40-year-old man with a total hip arthroplasty was injured in an auto accident. The injury was a posterior fracture-dislocation of the total hip and produced migration of a dislocated acetabular prosthesis. A large hematoma extended from the hip to the medial aspect of the thigh. This unusual case illustrates the importance of obtaining serial roentgenograms for hip arthroplasties and for injuries of the hip joint.

Neuromuscular training to prevent ACL injuries in female athletes: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

We aimed to systematically assess the prognosis of Effect of Neuromuscular training on female athletes with Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries by System evaluation and meta-analysis. Among these, 7 articles were selected for inclusion in the review, consisting of 5 retrospective case series (RCS) and 2 prospective case series (PCS). In comparison to the control group, neuromuscular training reduced ACL injury odds (OR 0.81, 95% CI 0.70-0.94). A significant improvement in effectiveness was also noted in the incidence rate of Hip and Thigh injuries when compared to the control group (odds

Incidence and risk factors for hip fractures among U.S. Armed Forces active component women compared to men, 2018-2022.

Women, who comprise approximately 18% of the U.S. Armed Forces, suffer disproportionately higher rates of musculoskeletal injuries among active component service members. Using a retrospective study design, this study calculated incidence rates and rate ratios for acute hip fractures and hip stress fractures from January 1, 2018 through September 30, 2022 among female and male active component U.S. military members. Women who were younger than age 20 years, in recruit training, serving in the Army or Marine Corps, engaged in combat-related occupations, and with body mass indexes in the underwe

Chondral lesions of the hip: microfracture and chondroplasty.

Hip arthroscopy has become increasingly popular over the past several years as the techniques have evolved to be able to address both the peripheral and central compartments of the hip. The main indications for hip arthroscopy 10 years ago were diagnostic and debridement procedures such as removal of loose bodies, labral resection, synovectomy, and cartilage debridement. Advances in this field have now expanded to include reconstruction and repair of the labrum, recontouring of the acetabulum and head-neck junction, cartilage salvage, and repair and releases of the tendons around the hip joint

Imaging of the Acutely Injured Hip.

Acute hip pain following injury more commonly originates locally in and around the hip joint rather than being referred from the lumbar spine, sacroiliac joints, groin, or pelvis. Clinical assessment can usually localize the pain source to the hip region. Thereafter, imaging helps define the precise cause of acute hip pain. This review discusses the imaging of common causes of acute hip pain following injury in adults, addressing injuries in and around the hip joint. Pediatric and postsurgical causes of hip pain following injury are not discussed.

Post-traumatic osteoarthritis: the worst associated injuries and differences in patients' profile when compared with primary osteoarthritis.

BACKGROUND: The estimated prevalence of post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) is 10-12% and in this study 12.4%. Different knee and hip injuries have been identified as risk factors for PTOA, but there is no consensus regarding the most painful and disabling injuries. Identifying these injuries might help in the prevention of PTOA. Additionally, patients with PTOA have a higher risk for complications after arthroplasty than patients with primary OA, perhaps due to differences in the profile and comorbidity that might help to explain the difference. This work aims 1) to identify the most common …

A new method for reduction of hip dislocations.

Traumatic hip dislocations and dislocation of total hip arthroplasties are common injuries. Closed reduction of either a dislocated hip or a total hip arthroplasty can be a demanding procedure and may necessitate open reduction if unsuccessful or lead to further complications. These include fracture or neurovascular injury to the patient, as well as injury to the surgeon when reducing the hip. This article describes a technique that reliably reduces dislocations while minimizing complications.

Arthroscopic Treatment of Traumatic Hip Dislocation.

Traumatic hip dislocations are high-energy injuries that often result in considerable morbidity. Although appropriate management improves outcomes, associated hip pathology may complicate the recovery and lead to future disability and pain. Historically, open reduction has been the standard of care for treating hip dislocations that require surgical intervention. The use of hip arthroscopy to treat the sequelae and symptoms resulting from traumatic hip dislocations recently has increased, however. When used appropriately, hip arthroscopy is a safe, effective, and minimally invasive treatment o

Traumatic fracture-dislocation of the hip following rugby tackle: a case report.

Posterior fracture-dislocation of hip is uncommonly encountered in rugby injuries. We report such a case in an adult while playing rugby. The treating orthopaedician can be caught unaware and injuries in such sports can be potentially misdiagnosed as hip sprains. Immediate reduction of the dislocation was performed in theatres. The fracture was fixed with two lag screws and a neutralization plate. This led to early rehabilitation and speedy recovery with return to sporting activities by 12 months.

Vascular complications after total hip arthroplasty.

Four cases of vascular complications in connection with total hip replacement are reported and another 25 cases from the literature summarized. Acute intraoperative injuries most often give rise to severe haemorrhage. Delayed injuries with pseudoaneurysm formation or thrombosis give rise to hip pain, distal ischaemia or haemorrhage when a prosthesis is extracted. There is a dominance of female patients and left-sided operations and cases complicated with infections and reoperations. Aetiologic and therapeutic considerations are discussed.

Hip and groin pain in the professional athlete.

Hip and groin pain is a common condition in professional athletes and may result from an acute injury or from chronic, repetitive trauma. It is responsible for significant morbidity, which leads to time away from training and competition, and may result in a career-ending injury. The anatomic and biomechanical causes for hip and groin injuries are among the most complex and controversial in the musculoskeletal system. This makes clinical differentiation and subsequent management difficult because of the considerable overlap of symptoms and signs. This review article will evaluate several patho
