The environments that parasites experience within hosts change dramatically over 24 h. How rhythms shape host-parasite-vector interactions is poorly understood owing to the challenges of disentangling the roles of rhythms of multiple interacting species in the context of the complex lifecycles of parasites. Using canonical circadian clock-disrupted hosts, we probe the limits of flexibility in the rhythmic replication of malaria (Plasmodium) parasites and quantify the consequences for fitness proxies of both parasite and host. We reveal that parasites alter the duration of their replication rhy

A key event in Leishmania pathogenesis is the interaction between parasite surface molecules and host immune cells. Among these, lipophosphoglycan (LPG), the dominant surface glycoconjugate of Leishmania promastigotes, plays a central role in establishing infection and evading immune responses. Beyond mediating adhesion and protection, LPG actively modulates host membrane receptors and intracellular signaling pathways. This chapter explores the multifaceted strategies by which LPG alters host cell membrane organization to promote parasite survival. By engaging various surface receptors, LPG fa

A few specialized tick-transmitted protozoa cause fatal infectious diseases in cattle through a unique cell biological mechanism, the transformation of host leukocytes into cancer-like cells. These 'transformative' parasites, such as Theileria annulata, hijack host signaling pathways and, during the schizont stage of their complex life cycle, cause uncontrolled proliferation and immortalization of infected cells, likely through a broad repertoire of fine-tuned effector proteins. This review summarizes recent advancements on the parasite-host interactions proposed to underlie this remarkable tr

Ticks, being ectothermic, are highly sensitive to climate variables, such as temperature, humidity, and precipitation. Over the past century, fossil fuel use has altered the climate and significantly affected the tick-host-pathogen system. These changes influence tick lifecycles, behavior, vector competency, host dynamics, and pathogen transmission. Consequently, tick-borne diseases (TBDs) have experienced shifts in their geographical range, incidence, and host preferences, particularly in the Northern Hemisphere. While climate change drives the emergence of vector-borne diseases, key aspects,

Since the immune response mounted by the host to a particular microorganism might be influenced by the acquired immunological experience due to previous contact with other microorganisms, we performed a cross-sectional study to explore the pattern of Trypanosoma cruzi infection-related antibodies in T. cruzi-seropositive individuals presenting concomitant tuberculosis, or the antecedent of BCG vaccination. Sampled individuals were grouped as follows: patients with Chagas disease, not vaccinated with BCG, who further developed pulmonary tuberculosis; individuals with Chagas disease, BCG-vaccina

The study of host-parasite relationships is an integral part of the immunology of aquatic species, where the complexity of both organisms has to be overlayed with the lifecycle stages of the parasite and immunological status of the host. A deep understanding of how the parasite survives in its host and how they display molecular mechanisms to face the immune system can be applied for novel parasite control strategies. This review highlights current knowledge about salmon and sea louse, two key aquatic animals for aquaculture research worldwide. With the aim to catch the complexity of the salmo

The Damage-Response Framework (DRF) provides a conceptual model for understanding the pathogenesis of parasitic infections by distinguishing biological infection from clinical infectious disease. Rather than viewing parasite virulence as an intrinsic property, the DRF proposes that disease results from dynamic host-parasite interactions, with host damage determined by the magnitude and quality of the immune response. Both insufficient immune responses, permitting parasite proliferation, and excessive inflammation, causing immunopathology, can lead to disease. Using representative examples, inc…

Parasitic infections are increasingly recognized as contributors to cancer development, yet the underlying oncogenic mechanisms remain insufficiently understood. Growing evidence from molecular oncology, immunology, and microbiome research suggests that chronic parasitic infections may drive tumorigenesis through sustained inflammation, deregulated signaling pathways, genomic instability, and the release of parasite-derived exosomes that reshape the tumor microenvironment. These insights underscore the need to integrate parasitology with cancer biology to understand infection-associated malign

Intestinal trematodes constitute a major group of helminths that parasitize humans and animals with relevant morbidity and mortality. Despite the importance of the intestinal trematodes in medical and veterinary sciences, immunology and pathology of these helminth infections have been neglected for years. Apart from the work focused on the members of the family Echnistomatidae, there are only very isolated and sporadic studies on the representatives of other families of digeneans, which makes a compilation of all these studies necessary. In the present review, the most salient literature on th

BACKGROUND: miRNAs are known as non-coding RNAs that can regulate gene expression. They are reported in many microorganisms and their host cells. Parasite infection can change or shift host miRNAs expression, which can aim at both parasite eradication and infection.
PURPOSE: This study dealt with examination of miRNA expressed in intestinal protozoan, coccidia , as well as profile changes in host cell miRNA after parasitic infection and their role in protozoan clearance/ survival.
METHODS: The authors searched ISI Web of Sciences, Pubmed, Scholar, Scopus, another databases and articles publi

Gastrointestinal nematodes are a diverse class of pathogens that colonise a quarter of the world's human population and nearly all grazing livestock. These macroparasites establish, and some migrate, within host gastrointestinal niches during their life cycles and release molecules that condition the host mucosa to enable chronic infections. Understanding how helminths do this, and defining the molecules and mechanisms involved in host modulation, holds promise for novel strategies of anthelmintics and vaccines, as well as new knowledge of immune regulation and tissue repair. Yet the size and

Trophically transmitted parasites have life cycles that require the infected host to be eaten by the correct type of predator. Such parasites should benefit from an ability to suppress the host's fear of predators, but if the manipulation is imprecise the consequence may be increased predation by non-hosts, to the detriment of the parasite. Three-spined sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus) infected by the cestode Schistocephalus solidus express reduced antipredator behaviours, but it is unknown whether this is an example of a highly precise manipulation, a more general manipulation, or if it

Evolved eggshell strength is greater in several lineages of obligate avian brood parasites (birds that lay their eggs in other species' nests) than in their hosts. Greater strength is typically indirectly implied by eggshell thickness comparisons between parasites and hosts. Nevertheless, there is strong evidence that the eggshell structural organization differentially influences its mechanical properties. Using instrumental puncture tests and SEM/EBSD and XRD techniques, we studied the most relevant eggshell mechanical, textural, ultrastructural and microstructural features between several ho

Most ecologists and conservationists perceive parasitic infections as deleterious for the hosts. Their effects, however, depend on many factors including host body condition, parasite load and the life cycle of the parasite. More research into how multiple parasite taxa affect host body condition is required and will help us to better understand host-parasite coevolution. We used body condition indices, based on mass-length relationships, to test the effects that abundances and biomasses of six parasite taxa (five trematodes, Apatemon sp., Tylodelphys sp., Stegodexamene anguillae, Telogaster o

Many parasites circulate endemically within communities of multiple host species. To understand disease persistence within these communities, it is essential to know the contribution each host species makes to parasite transmission and maintenance. However, quantifying those contributions is challenging. We present a conceptual framework for classifying multihost sharing, based on key thresholds for parasite persistence. We then develop a generalized technique to quantify each species' contribution to parasite persistence, allowing natural systems to be located within the framework. We illustr

In Thailand, infection with the liver fluke Opisthorchis viverrini is a serious health problem, with over 8.6 million human infections each year. Early stage biliary intrahepatic migration and infection of O. viverrini in the Syrian golden hamster were used to study the growth and development of this fluke. Fifty metacercariae of O. viverrini were introduced into each hamster by gastric intubation. Worms were found to migrate rapidly from the stomach to the gall bladder and hepatic duct, where they remained in relatively constant numbers until the end of week 8. Sexual development of worms was

Specific defense protects against some parasite genotypes but not others, whereas non-specific defense is effective against all genotypes of a parasite. Some empirical studies observe hosts with variability only in non-specific defense, other studies find only specific defense. I analyse a model with combined specific and non-specific defense to determine the conditions that favor detectable variation in each form of defense. High variation in non-specific defense is often maintained when resistance increases in an accelerating way with investment, whereas low variation tends to occur when res

Hypereosinophilia is often linked to the presence of pluricellular parasites in host tissues. Polynuclear eosinophils are sprung from the bone marrow. After multiplying and maturing, they are thrown into the blood flow and from the blood to the tissues where they are found in immediate contact with the parasite. Eosinophils are major components of the parasitic granuloma. Parasitic diseases are a major cause of hypereosinophilia and eosinophilia is mainly due to helminths. Protozoa do not produce hypereosinophilia, except for toxoplasmosis in which a low and discontinuous eosinophilia may be s
