INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Gestational trophoblastic disease is an uncommon group of pregnancy-related disorders, with a course of trophoblastic proliferation, including hydatidiform mole (Agha et al., 2020), invasive and metastatic mole, choriocarcinoma, placental-site trophoblastic tumor, and epithelial trophoblastic tumor. Choriocarcinoma and trophoblastic tumor of the placenta are the most important tumors associated with pregnancy.
CASE FINDINGS: A 52-year-old woman Para 2 Living 3, 3 years post-menopausal presented with prolong per vaginal bleeding for five weeks accompanied by lower

OBJECTIVE: To screen the specific molecular maker of invasive hydatidiform moles (HM) by differential display analysis.
METHODS: For dot hybridization, about 1.0 microg of each cDNA sample of invasive and non-invasive HM were labeled as probes using the Dig DNA labeling and Detection Kit (Boehringer Mannheim). The specific expression fragments of invasive HM recovered from PAGE gel were re-amplified by PCR, and the PCR products were dotted onto nylon membrane and hybridized by two probes of invasive and non-invasive HM cDNA respectively. Some fragments with a strong positive hybridization sig

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the expression and clinicopathologic features of epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) associated protein of cytokeratin-18 (CK-18) and vimentin in gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD).
METHODS: Immunohistochemistry was used to determine theexpression of CK-18 and vimentin in normal pregnancy villis (39 cases), hydatidiform mole (HM) (33 cases) and gestational trophoblastic neoplasia (GTN) (invasive mole 27 cases and choriocarcinoma 5 cases).
RESULTS: The GTN group had significantly lower levels of CK-18 compared with the normal pregnancy villis group and the HM

The distinction between choriocarcinoma and residual trophoblastic cell proliferation from a complete hydatidiform mole/invasive mole (CHM/IM) without villi is challenging on curettage materials. We investigated whether SALL4 immunostaining could help differentiate various gestational trophoblastic diseases. Placental site nodules (PSN; n=10), atypical PSN (APSN; n=8), placental site trophoblastic tumors (PSTT; n=9), epithelioid trophoblastic tumors (ETT; n=5), gestational choriocarcinomas (n=31), partial hydatidiform moles (PHM; n=13), CHM/IM (n=47), and nonmolar products of conception (POC)

Hydatidiform mole (complete and partial), invasive mole, choriocarcinoma, placental site trophoblastic disease, and epithelioid trophoblastic tumour constitute the spectrum of benign and malignant gestational trophoblastic disease[1] Invasive mole, choriocarcinoma, placental site trophoblastic disease, and epithelioid trophoblastic tumour also classify under gestational trophoblastic neoplasia.[1] The prevalence of molar pregnancy shows great worldwide variation with reported rates of 12 per 1,000 pregnancies in Indonesia, India, and Turkey; one to two per 1,000 pregnancies in Japan and China;

Using specific homologous radioimmunoassays of native hCG and its alpha and beta subunits, we determined the levels of these glycoproteins in unfiltered maternal blood serially obtained in five non-invasive hydatidiform moles before and after evacuation. Some of these samples were assayed after gel filtration chromatography on Sephadex G 100. Twelve samples, obtained in cases of invasive trophoblastic tumour after ablative surgery and chemotherapy, were also assessed for their hCG, hCG alpha and hCG beta content. In unaborted moles, mean circulating levels of native hCG and free hCG beta were

Ultrasound is the modality of choice for evaluating normal or abnormal first trimester pregnancy. Sonography can usually provide a specific diagnosis in abnormal first trimester bleeding. When the sonographic appearance is correlated with the clinical presentation, accurate diagnosis is possible in most cases of gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD). Partial or complete hydatidiform moles can be diagnosed in early gestation. However certain cases will be missed if the curettage material is not sent for pathologic examination. Sometimes molar pregnancies have very unusual sonographic appearan

OBJECTIVE: Proliferation, migration and invasion of trophoblastic cells into the maternal endometrium are essential steps in human embryo implantation and placentation. Trophoblast invasion is normally limited in time, only during first and early second trimester of pregnancy, and in space, limited to the endometrium and the proximal third of myometrium. This process requires among other factors: the metalloproteinases (MMP) 2 and 9. Shallow trophoblast invasion is associated with pathologies including preeclampsia and fetal growth restriction whereas unlimited invasion is associated with hyda

AIM: To assess the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for prenatal differentiation between complete hydatidiform mole with a twin live fetus (CHMTF) and placental mesenchymal dysplasia (PMD).
METHODS: Three CHMTF cases and three PMD cases, from two institutions over a 6-year period, were retrospectively included in this study. Clinical findings including age, pregnancy history, serum hCG level, ultrasonography findings, complications of the mother, outcome of the fetus, and results of chromosomal study of fetus, amniotic fluid and lesion, if possible, were noted. MRI findings were evalua

Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), human luteinizing hormone, human thyroid-stimulating hormone, and human follicle-stimulating hormone are closely related family of proteins which share a common alpha-subunit. However, their sugar moieties are quite different. hCG contains five acidic asparagine-linked sugar chains. These five sugar chains are derived by sialylation from three neutral oligosaccharides: two biantennary (N-1 and N-2) and one monoantennary (N-3) complex-type oligosaccharides. Although hCG purified from the urine of pregnant women is more enriched in sialylated sugar chains than
