OBJECTIVE: To describe the correlation between the skeletal changes induced by maxillary protraction treatment and the sagittal airway dimension associated with tongue, soft palate, and hyoid bone position in skeletal Class III children.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty Class III patients (5 boys, 15 girls; mean age, 9.4 ± 1.8 years) treated with a maxillary protraction appliance were included in this study. Pretreatment and posttreatment cephalometric radiographs were analyzed; linear and angular measurements were performed by an expert orthodontist. The correlation between treatment changes in…

A lingual mandibular bone concavity in the central incisor region is described. The radiographic appearance of the concavity in this area is an uncommon finding. A review of the literature is presented along with the report of this case. An exact diagnosis of this lesion can be made only by surgical intervention and histologic examination. However, the axial occlusal radiographic view is thought to be helpful in diagnosing this lesion clinically.

In forensic medicine, hanging is a frequent cause of non-natural death which may pose diagnostic problems on the investigator due to the manifold and sometimes ambiguous autopsy findings. The great variability of appearances potentially impedes the classification as to the manner of death (suicide, accident, homicide). The significance of some signs formerly considered to prove vital suspension could not always be confirmed in more recent studies. Therefore, traditional conception passed on from generation to generation must be critically questioned and, if necessary, replaced by evidence-base

Sistrunk procedure is the standard method for thyroglossal duct cyst resection. While this procedure is successful and safe, it results in postoperative scars on the front of neck. We propose a total transoral technique without external incision that starts with careful separation of the floor of the mouth and genioglossus muscle followed by the exact localization of the cyst using methylene blue. Simultaneously, the hyoid bone connected to the cyst and tract was removed. Finally, routine hemostasis is conducted, and the operative cavity is closed. All patients who received this operation in o…

PURPOSE: Postswallow pharyngeal residue is a risk factor for aspiration, implies swallowing inefficiency, and increases the work of eating. The Bolus Clearance Ratio (BCR) is a derived metric that relates quantities of bolus material observed in the pharynx at two different points: before and after a swallow. The ratio provides a percentage estimate of bolus clearance. In healthy adults, mean BCR is < .05; that is, less than 5% of an ingested bolus is retained in the pharynx. The aim of this study was to compare BCR measures from patients referred for videofluoroscopic swallow studies with con

Adequate hyoid and laryngeal displacement facilitate safe and efficient swallowing. Although videofluoroscopy is commonly used for assessment of this biomechanical event, ultrasound provides benefits as a radiation-free modality for this purpose. This study investigated validity of a pocket-sized ultrasound system (Clarius™) in the assessment of hyoid and laryngeal excursion. Hyoid excursion and thyrohyoid approximation were concurrently assessed in 20 healthy adults using ultrasound and videofluoroscopy during saliva, liquid, and puree swallowing. Correlation analyses were performed to evalua

A five year old girl presented with a mid-line neck swelling. At operation, a multiloculated cyst was excised with a portion of hyoid bone and a suprahyoid gelatinous tract extending into the base of the tongue. Histology revealed a benign colloid cyst with associated thyroid tissue. Post-operative investigations indicated severe hypothyroidism. The cystic nature of the lesion was misleading at operation and pre-operative thyroid ultrasonography (US) is recommended for all patients with suspected thyroglossal tract cysts (TGC).

During swallowing, a diverse range of mammals-from opossums to humans-propel food boluses out of the oropharynx via tongue base retraction (TBR). The widespread distribution of TBR behavior implies an ancient evolutionary origin, but the biomechanical mechanisms of TBR remain poorly understood. The evolution of TBR behavior is further complicated by the diversity of hyoid and tongue anatomy across mammals: to what extent does hyolingual morphology shape TBR mechanism? Using biplanar videoradiography and the XROMM workflow, we collected high-resolution 3D kinematic data in opossums (Marsupialia

Softshell turtles (Pan-Trionychidae) are an early branching clade of hidden-necked turtles (Cryptodira) with a rich fossil record extending back to the Early Cretaceous. The evolutionary history of softshell turtles is still unresolved because of their conservative morphology combined with high levels of polymorphism related to morphological plasticity and ontogeny. We present a revised list of characters focused on the skull and hyoid of extant trionychids. To better assess the polymorphism present in extant softshell turtles, we assembled a set of photographs and μCT scans that document the

OBJECTIVES: Lingual thyroglossal duct cysts (LTGDCs) are clinically rare and easily misdiagnosed as epiglottic cysts. Misdiagnosis leads to … racteristics according to flexible laryngoscopy. To determine the relationship between the cyst and hyoid bone, CT was performed. The surgical method was chosen based on the relationship between the cyst and hyoid bone and history of recurrence.

A two dimensional finite element model of upper airway respiratory function was developed emphasizing the effects of dilator muscular activation on the human retro-lingual airway. The model utilized an upright mid-sagittal computed tomography of the human head and neck to reconstruct relevant structures of the tongue, mandible, and the hyoid-related soft tissues, along with the retro-lingual airway. The reconstructed geometry was divided into fluid and solid domains and discretized into finite element (FE) meshes used for the computational model. Three cases were investigated: standing positio

The digastric muscles of 99 cadavers were examined bilaterally. In 5 of them, the digastric muscles showed different types of complex abnormalities. These complex anomalies should be kept in mind in functional studies involving the floor of mouth and evaluating the same structures with CT and MR imaging. Secondly, the embryological basis of the isolated anomalies of the anterior digastric muscle with respect to its occurrence together with the mylohyoid muscle stressed in this article needs further studies of their development from the first branchial arch.

INTRODUCTION: Airway injury is a very rare complication of thyroglossal duct cyst surgery in children. The wound is most frequently located at the larynx, due to a confusion between the hyoid bone and the thyroid cartilage.
OBSERVATION: This is the first report of a tracheal injury complicating Sistrunk's procedure in a 3 year old child, revealed by respiratory distress. Conservative treatment was suggested, requiring a tracheostomy lasting 49 days, leading to decanulation and complete anatomical and functional recovery.
CONCLUSION: This report highlights the specificity of pediatric laryngo…

A description of the deep structures of the neck that are responsible for submandibular fullness and a systematic surgical approach to reduce them are presented. The structures susceptible to surgical management include the subplatysmal fat, inter-sternocleidomastoid origin fat, anterior belly of the digastric muscle, hyoid bone, submandibular gland and the tail of the parotid gland. A thorough analysis of the key anatomic landmarks of the young and attractive neck is detailed in resting and dynamic positions. A clinical classification of parotid reduction in the face lift/neck lift patient is…

The clinicopathological findings in 48 cases underwent complete surgical excision of epithelial tissue of the thyoglossal duct remnants were reviewed. Simple incision of the cyst does not seem to have any therapeutic value and would be followed frequently by recurrence. The widely used Sistrunk procedure 2,6 surgical excision of the central portion of the hyoid bone together with fibrous tract extending to the base of tongue, seems to be warranted in some cases so long as complete eradication of the epithelial tissue can be made.

Objective Individuals with cleft lip and palate (CLP) are at a high risk of developing obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Hypothetically, the s … and mCSA showed a moderate negative correlation with resistance and pressure. The more inferior the hyoid bone, the more negative the pressures generated on the pharyngeal walls. Conclusion The position of the hyoid bone and the geometry of the UAW (V and mCSA) exerted effects on the airway-airflow resistance and pressure. However, key airflow characteristi …
