Leveraging infrared spectral signatures supported by machine learning to evaluate the patency of coronary artery bypass graft conduits: A preliminary study.

Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is a critical intervention for obstructive coronary artery disease, with the graft patency significantly impacting long-term outcomes. This study evaluates the potential of infrared (IR) spectroscopic imaging combined with machine learning to assess biochemical markers for determining the patency in internal mammary artery (IMA), radial artery (RA), and saphenous vein (SV) conduits. Tissue samples of the grafts from CABG patients were analysed using IR spectroscopic imaging. Hyperspectral images were pre-processed and subjected to unsupervised hierarchica

System Vicarious Calibration and Atmospheric Correction of the Airborne Watersat Imaging Spectrometer Experiment.

We present the vicarious calibration and validation of atmospheric correction for the airborne Watersat Imaging Spectrometer Experiment (WISE) sensor, deployed over the south-west shores of Anticosti Island (Gulf of Saint Lawrence). Coincident in situ water-leaving reflectance was acquired from the research vessel Coriolis II (HyperSAS, above-water radiometry) and from a jet-ski (underwater radiometry). The HyperSAS Hyperspectral Surface Acquisition System dataset was used for calibration, while the jet-ski dataset was split into 30% calibration and 70% validation. We evaluated Ratio and Empir

The human retina in Alzheimer's disease: Pathology, mechanisms, and biomarkers.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by progressive neurodegeneration and synaptic dysfunction that begins decades before clinical symptoms emerge. While AD research has traditionally focused on the brain, increasing evidence suggests that the retina undergoes pathological remodeling that shares features with cerebral changes. Advances in retinal imaging, including optical coherence tomography (OCT), OCT angiography, and hyperspectral approaches, have identified structural, vascular, and functional abnormalities in individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and early-stage AD. This

Label-Free Degradation Diagnosis for Classifier Selection in Hyperspectral Scenes.

In hyperspectral image classification, the most suitable classifier depends on the magnitude and the type of degradation present in the scene; this information, however, cannot be obtained without labels at the stage where the choice has to be made. A two-layer diagnosis computed before classification and without labels is proposed in this study: a severity index reports the magnitude of the degradation, while three scene-derived indicators separate independent, band-dependent, spectrally correlated and striped structures from one another, while classification itself remains supervised. The ap

Lipid Metabolic Heterogeneity during Early Embryogenesis Revealed by Hyper-3D Stimulated Raman Imaging.

Studying embryogenesis is fundamental to understanding developmental biology and reproductive medicine. Its process requires precise spatiotemporal regulations in which lipid metabolism plays a crucial role. However, the spatial dynamics of lipid species at the subcellular level remains obscure due to technical limitations. To address this challenge, we developed a hyperspectral 3D imaging and analysis method based on stimulated Raman scattering microscopy (hyper-3D SRS) to quantitatively assess lipid profiles in individual embryos through submicrometer resolution (x-y), 3D optical sectioning

A multi-scale spectroscopic approach unveiling hidden manipulation and restoration treatments in mineralogical specimens.

Conservation conditions assessment of cultural heritage objects is a complex task, requiring the distinction between original and manipulated areas and the identification of materials employed during previous interventions. At the same time, the analysis and detection of exogenous materials should minimise or avoid sampling and prevent sample degradation. In this study, a multi-analytical and multi-scale method is developed to achieve these goals, combining non-invasive hyperspectral imaging in the short-wave infrared region (HSI-SWIR) with micro-invasive FTIR and micro-Raman spectroscopies. T…

Live-Cell Imaging and Quantification of PolyQ Aggregates by Stimulated Raman Scattering of Selective Deuterium Labeling.

Polyglutamine (polyQ) diseases are a group of neurodegenerative disorders, involving the deposition of aggregation-prone proteins with long polyQ expansions. However, the cytotoxic roles of these aggregates remain highly controversial, largely due to a lack of proper tools for quantitative and nonperturbative interrogations. Common methods including in vitro biochemical, spectroscopic assays, and live-cell fluorescence imaging all suffer from certain limitations. Here, we propose coupling stimulated Raman scattering microscopy with deuterium-labeled glutamine for live-cell imaging, quantificat

Spatial-Spectral Deep Learning for Prostate Cancer Tissue Classification in Infrared Spectroscopy.

Modern methods of infrared (IR) spectroscopy yield full IR absorbance spectra in arrays, forming hyperspectral images. End-to-end processing of these images via deep learning seems ideal for exploiting their high dimensionality and wealth of spatial and spectral information, but recent research suggests that convolution-based architectures may have a spatial bias. Toward the goal of improved prostate cancer tissue classification, we compare a variety of deep learning classifiers for IR spectroscopy and probe the impact of a bottleneck which compresses the spectral dimension. We find a strong c

Comparison of Whiskbroom and Pushbroom darkfield elastic light scattering spectroscopic imaging for head and neck cancer identification in a mouse model.

The early detection of head and neck cancer is a prolonged challenging task. It requires a precise and accurate identification of tissue alterations as well as a distinct discrimination of cancerous from healthy tissue areas. A novel approach for this purpose uses microspectroscopic techniques with special focus on hyperspectral imaging (HSI) methods. Our proof-of-principle study presents the implementation and application of darkfield elastic light scattering spectroscopy (DF ELSS) as a non-destructive, high-resolution, and fast imaging modality to distinguish lingual healthy from altered tis…

A Microfluidic Multispectral Diffraction Platform for Quantitative Analysis of Atmospheric Black Carbon Aerosols.

Atmospheric black carbon aerosol (BC) is a major environmental pollutant that contributes to climate warming and threatens respiratory and cardiovascular health, making its accurate quantification essential for coordinated pollution control. However, BC is mainly submicron in size and commonly mixed with multicomponent impurities, leading to complex optical coupling effects that hinder precise quantification. In addition, conventional instruments are often expensive and bulky, limiting their suitability for rapid on-site detection and high-density deployment. Here, we present a precise BC quan

Robust principal component analysis-based four-dimensional computed tomography.

The purpose of this paper for four-dimensional (4D) computed tomography (CT) is threefold. (1) A new spatiotemporal model is presented from … on or/and change detection with the least amount of data, such as multi-energy CT, cardiac MRI, and hyperspectral imaging. (2) A dynamic strategy for data acquisition, i.e. a temporally spiral scheme, is proposed that can potentially maintain similar reconstruction accuracy with far fewer projections of the data. The key point of this dynamic scheme is to reduce the to …

Association between cumulative radiation dose, adverse skin reactions, and changes in surface hemoglobin among women undergoing breast conserving therapy.

INTRODUCTION: Radiation therapy is crucial to effective cancer treatment. Modern treatment strategies have reduced possible skin injury, but few clinical studies have addressed the dose relationship between radiation exposure and skin reaction. This prospective clinical study analyzes skin oxygenation/perfusion in patients undergoing fractionated breast conserving therapy via hyperspectral imaging (HSI). METHODS: Forty-three women undergoing breast conserving therapy were enrolled in this study. Optically stimulated luminescent dosimeters (OSLDs) measured radiation exposure in four sites: tre…

Breast cancer-related lymphedema of the upper limb: integrating early surveillance and functional surgery into a synergistic management paradigm.

Breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) of the upper limb is a chronic complication of breast cancer treatment that significantly impairs patient quality of life. Conventional management typically begins only after overt swelling occurs. This reactive approach delays diagnosis, relies on subjective assessment, and prioritizes volume reduction over functional recovery. Consequently, it often misses the optimal window for intervention. Recent advances in objective early-monitoring technologies, such as hyperspectral imaging and bioelectrical impedance analysis, alongside the development of preci…

Solvent Effects on the Blinking Statistics of Color Centers in Chemical Vapor Deposition-Grown hBN.

We investigate how the local solvent environment influences the fluorescent behavior of multiple fluorescent emitters with high likelihood of presence of single photon emitters (SPEs) in chemical-vapor-deposited (CVD) hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). Widefield total internal reflection fluorescence (TIRF) microscopy and hyperspectral confocal imaging were used to quantify emitter activation, emission spectra, and intermittency dynamics in air and after exposure to water, ethanol, isopropanol (IPA), and hexane. The apparent surface density of active emitters increased by factors of 2.1 ± 0.4, 2.5
