Obesity, Hypertrichosis and Sex Steroids: Are these Factors Related to the Pilonidal Sinus Disease?

OBJECTIVES: Pilonidal sinus disease causes chronic inflammation of the skin and subcutaneous fatty tissue, and it commonly localises in the sacrococcygeal region. This study evaluated the effects of hypertrichosis, family history, obesity and sex steroids in 298 patients with pilonidal sinus disease. METHODS: The medical records of 618 patients treated at the General Surgery Clinic of Malatya State Hospital for primary pilonidal sinus disease between January 2014 and December 2017 were evaluated retrospectively. RESULTS: Female sex and family histories of pilonidal sinus disease and hypertri…

The First Reported Case of Fibrous Hamartoma of Infancy with Hyperhidrosis and Hypertrichosis in Korea.

Fibrous hamartoma of infancy (FHI) is a rare entity with a benign nature. The typical clinical features are a single, slowly growing, painless mass on the trunk that appears within the first 2 years of life. We report a 13-month-old boy who presented with a plaque on the lower back since 4 months of age. The plaque had gradually become larger and firm, and hyperhidrosis and hypertrichosis were noticed. No visible connection between the spinal cord and the lesion was found in radiologic studies, indicating a disease other than spinal dysraphism. Histopathological findings showed well-defined fi…

Intense pulsed light hair removal in a patient with congenital hypertrichosis terminalis.

We report a case of 1-year-old girl with congenital hypertrichosis terminalis treated using intense pulsed light for hair removal. Repeated sessions were performed every 3 weeks. Facial hair reduction was achieved after 12 sessions and body hair reduction after 15 sessions. Intense pulsed light resulted in 75% reduction of hair in congenital hypertrichosis terminalis.

Hypertrichosis cubiti: another case of a well-recognized but under-reported entity.

Hypertrichosis cubiti, also named hairy elbows syndrome, is an uncommon variety of congenital, circumscribed hypertrichosis with a remarkable amount of long vellous hair localized on the extensor surfaces of the upper extremities. It may appear both as a familial or sporadic form. In most patients, it is not associated with any other physical anomalies, although short stature and other development disorders have been described. We report a case occurring sporadically in a 5-year-old girl without associated abnormalities, and with a negative family history.

Localized hypertrichosis in a pediatric patient--what is the mechanism for excess hair growth?

Localized hypertrichosis is an uncommon complaint among pediatric dermatology patients. We highlight an instance of localized hypertrichosis due to an underlying diffuse neurofibroma in a patient with known neurofibromatosis 1. The classification and possible underlying pathogenic mechanisms of localized hypertrichosis in pediatric patients is discussed.

Hypertrichosis terminalis, gingival hyperplasia, and a characteristic face: a new distinct entity.

Congenital generalized hypertrichosis terminalis has been described in association with other features as gingival hyperplasia, osteochondrodysplasia, and a dysmorphic face. Bondeson and Miles [1993: Am J Med Genet 47:198-212] described a woman with universal congenital hypertrichosis terminalis associated with gingival hyperplasia; the face of this patient was coarse and different from other forms of hypertrichosis described before. We present an 11-year, 6-month-old girl with universal congenital hypertrichosis terminalis, gingival hyperplasia, and a characteristic coarse face resembling the…

The hairy family of Burma: a four generation pedigree of congenital hypertrichosis lanuginosa.

A Burmese family with congenital hypertrichosis lanuginosa had an eventful history in the nineteenth century. The earlier members of this family were employed at the court of Ava, but the later ones spent their lives in show business, being widely exhibited for money in the 1880s. Their extraordinary hairiness attracted much curiosity, and they were photographed several times. The hairy Burmese are the only example of a four-generation pedigree of congenital hypertrichosis lanuginosa, which is consistent with an autosomal dominant mode of inheritance. There is good evidence that, when the memb…

Acquired hypertrichosis languiginosa. Report of two new cases and a review of the literature.

Hypertrichosis lanuginosa is a pathologic state characterized by an excessive, new growth of fine, fetal hair. Two cases of hypertrichosis languinosa with malignancy (lymphoma and uterine cancer) are presented and added to the 9 in the literature. Lymphoma and uterine cancer are previously unreported as associated with hypertrichosis osis lanuginosa. Review of the 11 cases of hypertrichosis lanuginosa revealed the following characteristics: females were predominant; none was below the 4th decade; all had advanced neoplastic disease; all malignancies except one were of epithelial origin; and th…
