Episodic Future Thinking about Smoking-Related Illness: A Preliminary Investigation of Effects on Delay Discounting, Cigarette Craving, and Cigarette Demand.

Cigarette smokers show excessive delay discounting (devaluation of delayed rewards), which may contribute to tobacco use disorder. Episodic future thinking (EFT), or mental simulation of future events, has been shown to reduce both delay discounting and laboratory smoking behavior. Traditionally, EFT involves vividly imagining positive future events. In this preliminary investigation, we examined the effects of EFT specifically about smoking-related illness (SRI) on delay discounting, cigarette craving, and behavioral economic demand for cigarettes. In a 2 (episodic thinking) × 2 (smoking-rela

Motor imagery in Parkinson's disease: a PET study.

We used positron emission tomography (PET) with 15O-labelled water to record patterns of cerebral activation in six patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), studied when clinically "off" and after turning "on" as a result of dopaminergic stimulation. They were asked to imagine a finger opposition movement performed with their right hand, externally paced at a rate of 1 Hz. Trials alternating between motor imagery and rest were measured. A pilot study of three age-matched controls was also performed. We chose the task as a robust method of activating the supplementary motor area (SMA), defects o

Targeted expression of the signaling molecule decapentaplegic induces pattern duplications and growth alterations in Drosophila wings.

In the wing imaginal disc, the decapentaplegic (dpp) gene is expressed in a stripe of anterior cells near the anterior-posterior compartment boundary, and it is required solely in these cells for the entire disc to develop. In some viable segment polarity mutants, alterations in dpp expression have been demonstrated that correlate with changes in wing morphology. To test the hypothesis that the abnormal patterns of dpp expression are responsible directly for the mutant phenotypes, we have expressed dpp in ectopic places in wing imaginal discs, and we have found that dpp is able to cause overgr

Scene construction deficits in adolescent PTSD are in sensory, rather than spatial, imagery.

INTRODUCTION: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is characterized by memory and imagery disturbances, ascribed in part to structural and functional hippocampal abnormalities. These include impaired mental simulation of past and future events, as well as deficits in imagining novel, neutral, spatially coherent scenes ("scene construction"). Structural hippocampal differences are less consistently found in adolescent PTSD; however, deficits in recalling specific autobiographical memories have been noted. METHODS: We examined scene construction ability in adolescents with PTSD, a presumably h

Subjective vividness of motor imagery has a neural signature in human premotor and parietal cortex.

Motor imagery (MI) is the process in which subjects imagine executing a body movement with a strong kinesthetic component from a first-person perspective. The individual capacity to elicit such mental images is not universal but varies within and between subjects. Neuroimaging studies have shown that these inter-as well as intra-individual differences in imagery quality mediate the amplitude of neural activity during MI on a group level. However, these analyses were not sensitive to forms of representation that may not map onto a simple modulation of overall amplitude. Therefore, the present s

Individual variation in the propensity for prospective thought is associated with functional integration between visual and retrosplenial cortex.

It is well recognized that the default mode network (DMN) is involved in states of imagination, although the cognitive processes that this association reflects are not well understood. The DMN includes many regions that function as cortical "hubs", including the posterior cingulate/retrosplenial cortex, anterior temporal lobe and the hippocampus. This suggests that the role of the DMN in cognition may reflect a process of cortical integration. In the current study we tested whether functional connectivity from uni-modal regions of cortex into the DMN is linked to features of imaginative though…

Brain motor system function after chronic, complete spinal cord injury.

Most therapies under development to restore motor function after spinal cord injury (SCI) assume intact brain motor functions. To examine this assumption, 12 patients with chronic, complete SCI and 12 controls underwent functional MRI during attempted, and during imagined, right foot movement, each at two force levels. In patients with SCI, many features of normal motor system function were preserved, however, several departures from normal were apparent: (i) volume of activation was generally much reduced, e.g. 4-8% of normal in primary sensorimotor cortex, in the setting of twice normal vari

Electroencephalographic Predictors of Neuropathic Pain in Subacute Spinal Cord Injury.

It is widely believed that cortical changes are a consequence of longstanding neuropathic pain (NP). In this article, we demonstrate that NP in individuals with subacute spinal cord injury (SCI) has characteristic electroencephalography markers (EEG) that precede the onset of pain. EEG was recorded in a relaxed state and during motor imagination tasks in 10 able-bodied participants and 31 patients with subacute SCI (11 with NP, 10 without NP, and 10 who had pain develop within 6 months of EEG recording). All 20 patients with SCI initially without NP were tested for mechanically induced allodyn…

Phantasia, aphantasia, and hyperphantasia: Empirical data and conceptual considerations.

Within the past decade, the term "phantasia" has been increasingly used to describe the human capacity, faculty, or power of visual mental imagery, with extremes of imagery vividness characterised as "aphantasia" and "hyperphantasia". A substantial volume of empirical research addressing these constructs has now been published, including attempts to find inductive correlates of behaviourally defined aphantasia, for example using research questionnaires and functional magnetic resonance imaging. Mental imagery has long been noted as a source of conceptual confusions but no specific conceptual a

The importance of an exaggerated attention bottleneck for understanding psychopathy.

The psychopath has long captured the imagination. A name such as Ted Bundy evokes a morbid curiosity. The crimes committed by Bundy are so cruel that it is hard to imagine how someone could do such things. In this review we discuss evidence that exaggeration in an attention bottleneck is one mechanism that makes it possible for psychopathic individuals to be adept at focusing on a single stimulus feature or goal but struggle to process multiple streams of information simultaneously. This exaggeration may partly explain the behavioral, affective, and social deficits that are apparent among psyc…

Bacteria and vampirism in cinema.

A vampire is a non-dead and non-alive chimerical creature, which, according to various folklores and popular superstitions, feeds on blood of the living to draw vital force. Vampires do not reproduce by copulation, but by bite. Vampirism is thus similar to a contagious disease contracted by intravascular inoculation with a suspected microbial origin. In several vampire films, two real bacteria were staged, better integrated than others in popular imagination: Yersinia pestis and Treponema pallidum. Bacillus vampiris was created for science-fiction. These films are attempts to better define hum…

Pyoderma gangrenosum.

Since its description 50 years ago, pyoderma gangrenosum has continued to capture the attention and imagination of all those who see its dramatic presentation. Clinical observation still provides the only reliable diagnosis. As investigative techniques increase, more and more intriguing immunologic abnormalities associated with this disorder are discovered, but understanding of the pathogenesis remains elusive. It is now recognized as an independent condition as well as a co-condition with many systemic disorders. Many new treatment options are available, allowing much individualization of tre…

Integrating Virtual Reality Into OCD Treatment: Comparing Virtual Reality and Traditional Exposure Techniques in a Clinical Sample for Contamination-Related OCD.

Virtual reality exposure (VRE) is a useful and effective alternative that can overcome important limitations of traditional exposure methods. A limited number of recent studies have found promising results when examining the use of VRE in the treatment of contamination-related obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The aim of the present study was to compare the efficacy of VRE with in vivo and imaginal exposure in reducing contamination-related OCD symptoms. Forty-four participants diagnosed with DSM-5 OCD and whose primary symptoms were contamination obsessions and cleaning compulsions were in

Sense of agency over speech and proneness to auditory hallucinations: the reality-monitoring paradigm.

This study investigated the effects of imagining speaking aloud, sensorimotor feedback, and auditory feedback on respondents' reports of having spoken aloud and examined the relationship between responses to "spoken aloud" in the reality-monitoring task and the sense of agency over speech. After speaking aloud, lip-synching, or imagining speaking, participants were asked whether each word had actually been spoken. The number of endorsements of "spoken aloud" was higher for words spoken aloud than for those lip-synched and higher for words lip-synched than for those imagined as having been spok

Emotionality of mental imagery and its effect on choice behavior.

Imagining our behaviors and thereby anticipating their rewarding or unrewarding emotional consequences may motivate our choice behavior. This has great potential for clinical interventions aiming to motivate the engagement in adaptive behaviors. We investigated the difference in emotionality between mental imagery and verbal thought and its effect on subsequent choice behavior using a within-subject experimental design with pupil dilation as a measure of emotional arousal. Adults from the general population (N = 40) first imagined and constructed sentences concerning icon-word pairs yielding a

Ontologies of transition(s) in healthcare practice: examining the lived experiences and representations of transgender adults transitioning in healthcare.

In this article, we examine the ways transitions are constructed and represented within healthcare settings vis-à-vis lived experiences. Drawing on in-depth interviews with transgender people and data from a document analysis, we examine how transgender peoples' experiences fit within conceptualisations of transition(s) in healthcare guidance documents used in England. We take up Pearce's ([2018]. Understanding trans health. Bristol: Policy Press) suggestion to (re)think trans beyond 'condition', and rather as 'movement', to view being trans as a social identity rather than a defect. Our findi
