Impulsivity, sensation-seeking, and part-time job status in relation to substance use and gambling in adolescents.

PURPOSE: Although impulsivity, sensation-seeking, and part-time employment have each been linked to risky behaviors in adolescents, their inter-relationships are less well-understood. We examined data from adolescents to assess the following predictions: (1) sensation-seeking would relate closely to substance use and gambling; (2) impulsivity would relate closely to alcohol, drug, and gambling problems; and (3) these relationships would be particularly strong among those holding part-time jobs. METHOD: High-school students (N = 3,106) were surveyed to provide data on impulsivity, sensation-se

Alcohol increases impulsivity and abuse liability in heavy drinking women.

Heavy drinking has increased in recent years and has been linked to numerous health-related risks, particularly in women. A number of factors may play a role in exacerbating the risks linked to heavy drinking, such as impulsivity, which itself is related to a number of risky behaviors. The present study investigated the effects of alcohol (0, 0.5, 0.75 g/kg) on impulsivity in female heavy drinkers (n = 23) and female light drinkers (n = 23) using a double-blind, placebo-controlled outpatient design; all women were tested during follicular phase of the menstrual cycle. Each session, participant

Behavioral addictions: an overview.

The legitimacy of nonsubstance addictions has received increased attention from clinicians, researchers and the general population as more and more individuals report symptoms consistent with impairment of impulse control. The clinical presentation of these disorders is varied, as compulsive activities may include: gambling, eating, sex, shopping, use of the Internet or videogames or even exercising, working or falling in love. As such, there is great controversy in diagnosing, treating or even naming these conditions, as many of these behaviors are daily rituals instrumental to our ultimate s

Higher alcohol use is associated with subsequent increased risk seeking toward gains: A longitudinal cohort study in young men.

BACKGROUND: A higher propensity for impulsive and risky choices has often been reported in individuals with addiction, such as alcohol use disorder (AUD). Although domains of choice impulsivity, for example, temporal discounting, have been identified to predispose the development of hazardous alcohol use, research on altered decision making as a consequence of drinking is scarce. These may be particularly pronounced during periods of progressive brain development, such as young adulthood. METHODS: This 3-year prospective study investigated the effects of alcohol use on changes in four decisio

Gaming Motives and Impulsivity in Gaming Disorder: Additive or Interactive Effects?

BACKGROUND: The Interaction of Person-Affect-Cognition-Execution model suggests that impulsivity and specific gaming motives contribute to the development of gaming disorder (GD). However, it remains unclear whether these factors interact synergistically or operate independently. This study investigated the additive versus interactive effects of specific impulsivity facets, gaming motives, and behavior automatization on GD symptom severity. METHOD: A sample of 377 adult gamers (338 male, 38 female, 1 diverse; age 18-58 years, M = 25.44, SD = 5.51) was assessed using the Barratt Impulsiveness

The moderating effect of impulsivity on negative affect and body checking.

This study examined the moderating effects of different aspects of trait impulsivity on trajectories of negative affect prior to and following body checking in the natural environment in women with anorexia nervosa (AN). Body checking is a compulsive behavior that may maintain the cycle of eating disordered behavior through negative reinforcement. Previous studies regarding the relationship of negative affect to body checking have been inconsistent, making it unclear how negative affect functions as an antecedent to this behavior in the natural environment. We hypothesized that individual diff

Imbalance in Resting State Functional Connectivity is Associated with Eating Behaviors and Adiposity in Children.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Over the past 30 years, childhood obesity in the US has nearly doubled, while obesity has tripled among adolescents. Non-homeostatic eating, influenced by impulsivity and inhibition, may undermine successful long-term weight loss. We hypothesized that unhealthy eating habits and adiposity among children are associated with functional connectivity between brain regions associated with impulsivity, response inhibition, and reward. METHODS: We analyzed resting state functional magnetic resonance images from 38 children, ages 8–13. Using seed-based resting state functio

Neural Basis of Increased Cognitive Control of Impulsivity During the Mid-Luteal Phase Relative to the Late Follicular Phase of the Menstrual Cycle.

Hormonal changes across the menstrual cycle have been shown to influence reward-related motivation and impulsive behaviors. Here, with the aim of examining the neural mechanisms underlying cognitive control of impulsivity, we compared event-related monetary delay discounting task behavior and concurrent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) revealed brain activity as well as resting state (rs)-fMRI activity, between women in the mid-luteal phase (LP) and women in the late follicular phase (FP). The behavioral data were analyzed and related to neural activation data. In the delay discoun…

Ventral striatal regulation of CREM mediates impulsive action and drug addiction vulnerability.

Impulsivity, a multifaceted behavioral hallmark of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), strongly influences addiction vulnerability and other psychiatric disorders that incur enormous medical and societal burdens yet the neurobiological underpinnings linking impulsivity to disease remain poorly understood. Here we report the critical role of ventral striatal cAMP-response element modulator (CREM) in mediating impulsivity relevant to drug abuse vulnerability. Using an ADHD rat model, we demonstrate that impulsive animals are neurochemically and behaviorally more sensitive to heroin

Impulse Control Disorders and Related Complications of Parkinson's Disease Therapy.

Impulsive and compulsive behaviors in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients are most often attributed to dopamine agonist therapy; dysregulation of the mesocorticolimbic system accounts for this behavioral phenotype. The clinical presentation is commonly termed impulse control disorder (ICD): Behaviors include hypersexuality, compulsive eating, shopping, pathological gambling, and compulsive hobby participation. However, not all PD individuals taking dopamine agonists develop these behavioral changes. In this review, the authors focus on the similarities between the phenotypic presentation of ICDs

The Complexity of Impulsivity Dimensions among Abstinent Individuals with Substance Use Disorders.

Impulsivity is a complex construct that has been operationalized considering personality dimensions (e.g., negative urgency [NU], lack of pe … althy controls (HCs). There were two independent assessment phases: i) the administration of UPPS-P impulsive behavior scale; ii) a computerized neuropsychological battery (i.e., Attentional Network Test, Go/No-Go task, Iowa Gambling task). Patients with SUDs reported higher levels of NU and PU than HCs. NU, LPe, and LPr were associated to the co-occurrence of multi …

Discounting Behavior in Problem Gambling.

Problem gamblers discount delayed rewards more rapidly than do non-gambling controls. Understanding this impulsivity is important for developing treatment options. In this article, we seek to make two contributions: First, we ask which of the currently debated economic models of intertemporal choice (exponential versus hyperbolic versus quasi-hyperbolic) provides the best description of gamblers' discounting behavior. Second, we ask how problem gamblers differ from habitual gamblers and non-gambling controls within the most favored parametrization. Our analysis reveals that the quasi-hyperboli

Associations between sleep habits and different impulsivity facets in adolescence.

BACKGROUND: Sleep patterns change during adolescence due to physiological maturation and psychosocial factors, leading to progressively higher eveningness, sleep deprivation and social jetlag (SJL). These sleep changes are associated with impulsivity, a common behavioral trait in adolescence which can make those with developmental disabilities more vulnerable to behavioral, cognitive and clinical difficulties. However, it is unclear which aspects of sleep and what types of impulsivity are involved. AIMS: To investigate the relationships between sleep/circadian variables and self-reported impu

Examination of the effects of SCH23390 and raclopride infused in the dorsal striatum on amphetamine-induced timing impulsivity measured on a differential reinforcement of low-rate responding (DRL) task in rats.

Although the striatal dopamine (DA) is reportedly involved in impulsive action, little is known about the DA subtype receptors of dorsal striatum (dSTR) in the impulsive control involved in differential reinforcement of low-rate-responding (DRL) behavior. We examined the receptor-specific dopaminergic modulation of d-amphetamine (AMP)-altered DRL 10 s (DRL-10 s) performance by locally infusing SCH23390 (SCH) and raclopride (RAC), DA D1 and D2 receptor antagonists, respectively, into the rat's dSTR. Systemic injection of AMP significantly affected DRL-10 s behavior by increasing total, non-rein
