Inguinal hernias may contain the small or large bowel. About 10% of inguinal hernias become incarcerated, causing strangulation, bowel obstruction or infarction. Malignant lesions in groin hernias are rare; most intrasaccular neoplasms are colonic, and the most common reported site is the sigmoid colon, usually in a left inguinal hernia. We report a case of an incarcerated inguinal hernia containing carcinoma of the sigmoid colon.

INTRODUCTION: Littre's hernia is a rare finding consisting of a Meckel's diverticulum inside of a hernia sac. Clinically, it is indistinguishable from a hernia involving small bowel and therefore may be difficult to diagnose pre-operatively.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report a case of an inguinal hernia involving an unusually large Meckel's diverticulum measuring 15cm in length. The diverticulum was resected using a linear GI stapler and the hernia was repaired without complication.
DISCUSSION: Meckel's diverticulum is an embryologic remnant of the vitelline duct occurring in 1-3% of the adult

BACKGROUND: Incarcerated uterus is a rare but serious complication.
CASES: Two women presented with second trimester urinary retention. Nei … ary retention in the second trimester should have a pelvic examination performed to exclude uterine incarceration. Earlier recognition and appropriate treatment may have altered the outcome for the two patients presented.

OBJECTIVES: Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) arises in roughly 20-30% of individuals with psoriasis (PsO); notably, >80% of PsA cases are preceded by PsO after a clinically silent interval of immunogenetic priming and subclinical synovio-entheseal inflammation. Identification of this at-risk and subclinical window is hindered by absent staging criteria, validated biomarkers, and standardised surveillance, limiting opportunities for early intervention to prevent irreversible joint damage.
METHODS: We conducted a structured narrative review of PubMed (through June 2025) targeting studies on: 1. immuno

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to test whether variations in substance abuse, mental health diagnoses, individual experiences of violence, community experiences of violence, and incarceration history may be reduced to a single underlying syndemic factor for a sample of women incarcerated in three Midwestern U.S. jails.
DESIGN AND SAMPLE: Secondary data analysis of a cross-sectional study of a medical utilization survey; initial confirmatory factor analysis tested fit of model; modification indexes provided confirmatory fit. 290 women incarcerated in three urban Midwestern U.S. jails…

Diaphragmatic hernias are usually congenital, and they usually occur in the neonatal group. They do occur in the adult population, albeit very rarely. We present a case of an adult male patient with complications as a result of a congenital diaphragmatic hernia. The patient presented with atypical abdominal pain and respiratory distress. Radiological investigations confirmed a left hydropneumothorax as well as large bowel obstruction secondary to herniation of the omentum and transverse colon through a congenital defect in the left hemi-diaphragm. He had a laparotomy, which confirmed the radio

We present the case of a 79-year-old man with an irreducible and painful left groin mass. Obtaining a detailed history of present illness and assessment of radiological findings revealed an abscess in a groin hernia sac, which was formed secondary to perforation of the descending colon. Various examinations, however, failed to reveal the cause of the bowel perforation. Percutaneous drainage improved his symptoms. He was discharged home 24 days after admission with no further sequelae. An abscess in a groin hernia sac is very rare. Although neither bowel perforation nor hernia is rare, surgeons

OBJECTIVE: Incarcerated adolescents show a high prevalence rate of psychopathology and comorbid psychiatric conditions. Child and adolescent psychiatrists working in the penal system are confronted with the need to provide care and to develop specific treatment plans.
METHOD: The data gathered from incarcerated juveniles were analyzed with a special focus on gender-specific treatment aspects. The Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview for children and adolescents was used to assess psychopathology in detained juveniles in Austria. The final study sample consisted of 333 juveniles (58 g

BACKGROUND: Intussusception with the Meckel's diverticulum is rare cause of small bowel obstruction in the adults. The Meckel diverticulum i … inferior medial laparotomy. Intussusceptions of the Meckel's diverticulum and into the coecum with incarceration were found. Desincarceration and simple diverticulectomy was done.
CONCLUSION: The Meckels's diverticulum should be consider as a possible cause of the small bowel obs-truction in previously healthy patient.

Paraesophageal hernias (PEHs) are hernias in which the gastroesophageal junction stays where it belongs (attached at the level of the diaphragm), but part of the stomach passes or bulges into the chest beside the esophagus. It represents a small proportion of all hiatal hernias. It can lead to severe complications like incarceration, volvulus, or strangulation, which are true emergencies in the emergent department (ED). Paraesophageal hernia rarely features on a list of differential diagnoses of acute chest or epigastric pain. It could be treated as myocardial insult, and the outcome could be …

BACKGROUND: Rectal prolapse is an intussusception of the rectum through the anal canal. The extent of the prolapse varies from the rectal mucosa to the full thickness of the rectum and sigmoid colon. It usually appears after 50 years of age, with a female predominance of over 80-90% of cases.
CASE REPORT: A rare case of incarcerated rectal prolapse with sigmoid colon perforation is reported. A different approach for large incarcerated rectal prolapse was used that can easily be performed in the emergency department in comorbid elderly patients. In emergent conditions, comorbid diseases of the

UNLABELLED: Uterine incarceration is an uncommon but serious presentation in the emergency department that requires early recognition to improve maternal and fetal outcomes.
CASE: A 29-year-old female, at 12 weeks gestation, presented to the emergency department (ED) with complaints of fever, sacral pain and urgency. Based on history and physical examination, she was found to have a retroverted, incarcerated uterus. After a failed attempt at reduction in the ED, her uterus was successfully reduced under general anesthesia.
DISCUSSION: Pain and urinary difficulties, such as retention and hesi…

This study examines partner violence within an incarcerated sample of women and men. Specifically, it focused on the relationship between explicit and implicit attitudes to the perpetration and victimization of violence. Findings revealed that violence was bidirectional, with males and females equally likely to report being the perpetrator or victim of violence. The attitudes and beliefs associated with violence were similar regardless of gender, type of violence (physical or psychological), or whether individuals were the victim or perpetrator of violence. Hostility to women was the most sign

Despite the availability of various substance abuse treatments, alcohol and drug misuse and related negative consequences remain prevalent. Vipassana meditation (VM), a Buddhist mindfulness-based practice, provides an alternative for individuals who do not wish to attend or have not succeeded with traditional addiction treatments. In this study, the authors evaluated the effectiveness of a VM course on substance use and psychosocial outcomes in an incarcerated population. Results indicate that after release from jail, participants in the VM course, as compared with those in a treatment-as-usua

Acute diverticulitis may present with an abscess that is usually pericolonic or pelvic and can be treated with urgent surgery or percutaneous drainage. We present a case of a diverticular abscess presenting as a left inguinal hernia. This is analogous to an Amyand's hernia in which an inflamed appendix is found in a right inguinal hernia. The patient presented was managed with open drainage of the hernia and subsequent laparoscopic sigmoid resection in the same hospitalization.

Laparoscopic suturing and repairing of the fascial opening at 10- to 12-mm cannula puncture sites is well established; however, closing a 5-mm cannula wound is not well documented. We often leave the wound open without suture and cover it with gauze after removing the surgical drainage tube. An unusual early postoperative complication of laparoscopic surgery was an incarcerated hernia in a 5-mm cannula site. The 9-year-old girl underwent laparoscopic surgery due to an 8-cm ovarian mature teratoma. After 7 days, she came to our hospital because of a protruding mass in the left cannula wound. Th
