Chlamydia trachomatis control efforts that enhance detection and treatment of infected women may paradoxically increase susceptibility of th … tes formation of protective immune responses. In this paper, we detail findings from C. trachomatis infection control programs that increase our understanding of chlamydial immunoepidemiology and discuss their implications for prophylactic vaccine design.

Hookworms are bloodsucking nematodes that afflict up to 740 million persons in tropical and subtropical regions, with Asia and sub-Saharan Africa exhibiting particularly high infection rates. Prevalence, intensity, and pathology often vary considerably at both the regional and local level, and may be influenced by coinfection with other parasitic infections such as malaria. Immunoepidemiological studies suggest that hookworms manipulate the host immune response and may provide some protection from allergy and asthma. There has been substantial progress in elucidating the molecular pathogenesis

Airborne pathogens encounter several hurdles during host invasion, including alveolar macrophages (AMs) and airway epithelial cells (AECs) and their products. Although growing evidence indicates pathogen-sensing capacities of epithelial cells, the relative contribution of hematopoietic versus nonhematopoietic cells in the induction of an inflammatory response and their possible interplay is still poorly defined in vivo in the context of infections with pathogenic microorganisms. In this study, we show that nonhematopoietic cells, including AECs, are critical players in the inflammatory process

The helminth parasite Fasciola hepatica is responsible for major economic losses in agriculture throughout temperate regions of the globe. Control measures are heavily reliant on chemotherapy resulting in the emergence of drug resistant parasite populations. Novel control strategies based on vaccination ultimately require a deeper knowledge of host-parasite interactions. Herein we discuss recent advances in the understanding of the immune response to F. hepatica placing them in context with previous knowledge and developments from other model systems. Advances in RNAi and proteomics in the con

The Taenia saginata taeniasis-cysticercosis complex is a cosmopolitan zoonosis of great medical, veterinary and economic importance where humans play an important role as the carrier of adult stage and cattle as carrier of the larval stage of the parasite. Here we reviewed aspects concerning diagnosis, vaccine development, biological control and treatment of the disease.

In this paper we evaluate the role of neutrophils in pneumonic plague. Splenic neutrophils from naïve BALB/c mice were found to reduce numbers of culturable Yersinia pestis strain GB in suspension. A murine, BALB/c, intranasal model of pneumonic plague was used in conjunction with in vivo neutrophil ablation, using the GR-1 antibody. This treatment reduced neutrophil numbers without affecting other leukocyte numbers. Neutrophil ablated mice exhibited increased bacterial colonisation of the lung 24h post infection. Furthermore, exposure of Y. pestis to human neutrophils resulted in a 5-fold red

OBJECTIVE: To explore the association of Helicobacter pylori infection with gastric cardia cancer.
METHODS: An unmatched prospective nested case-control study was conducted. In 1985, 29 584 subjects in age of 40-69 were recruited from Linxian, Henan Province. 10 mL blood samples were collected from all participants. By March 2001, 1089 cases of gastric cardia cancer were diagnosed. 196 cases were randomly sampled from them and formed the case group. 185 subjects were randomly sampled from the subcohort, which was built up in a previous case-cohort study and was able to represent the baseline

In patients with visceral leishmaniasis, increased levels of circulating interleukin-6 (IL-6) regularly accompany fully expressed, progressive infections (kala-azar). To experimentally test the role of IL-6, responses to an intracellular Leishmania donovani infection in the livers of IL-6(-/-) and wild-type mice were compared. IL-6(-/-) mice showed an enhanced control of the infection and earlier, rapid parasite killing along with additional evidence of a stimulated antileishmanial Th1-cell-type response: increased levels of circulating gamma interferon, accelerated granuloma assembly, and hei

Trypanosoma cruzi is the etiologic agent of Chagas' disease, a major health problem in Latin America and an emerging infectious disease in the United States. Previously, we screened a T. cruzi sequence database by a computational-bioinformatic approach and identified antigens that exhibited the characteristics of good vaccine candidates. In this study, we tested the vaccine efficacy of three of the putative candidate antigens against T. cruzi infection and disease in a mouse model. C57BL/6 mice vaccinated with T. cruzi G1 (TcG1)-, TcG2-, or TcG4-encoding plasmids and cytokine (interleukin-12 a

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Superheat-and-flush is one of the methods of disinfection used against Legionella in hospital water distribution systems. An outbreak of nosocomial legionellosis (NL) was detected in the hospital Germans Trias i Pujol in January 1996. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of this disinfection technique at an environmental and clinical level.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: Water samples were collected daily from central and tap water points 3 days prior to 15 days after superheating and flushing. Clinical surveillance of NL was performed 30 consecutive days following

Infection with West Nile virus (WNV) causes fatal encephalitis more frequently in immunocompromised humans than in those with a healthy immune system. Although a complete understanding of this increased risk remains unclear, experiments with mice have begun to define how different components of the adaptive and innate immune response function to limit infection. Previously, we demonstrated that components of humoral immunity, particularly immunoglobulin M (IgM) and IgG, have critical roles in preventing dissemination of WNV infection to the central nervous system. In this study, we addressed t

Mycosis fungoides (MF) is a rare disease with an unknown aetiology, although it has been suggested that infections may play a role. The present study investigates whether infections, atopic disorders and some other diseases are risk indicators for MF. A European multicentre case-control study involving seven rare cancers, including MF, was conducted from 1995 to 1998. Patients between 35 and 69 years of age diagnosed with MF (n = 140) were recruited, and the diagnoses were verified by a reference pathologist, who classified 83 cases as definitive and 35 cases as possible; 22 cases were not acc

In May 2001, the World Health Assembly (WHA) estimated that two billion people were infected by soil-transmitted helminths (S-THs) and schistosomiasis, worldwide. The WHA urged member states to recognise that there can be synergy between public health control programmes for S-THs, schistosomiasis and other diseases. This is particularly relevant to the new dimension created by the HIV/AIDS epidemics in the same impoverished communities and countries where helminthiasis is hyperendemic. Immunological adaptation between humans and parasitic helminths has developed during evolution. Review of 109

OBJECTIVES: To determine if there is evidence to indicate that screening for Chlamydia trachomatis (chlamydia) is an effective intervention in the prevention of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID).
METHODS: A systematic review was made of the literature to assess the effectiveness of screening asymptomatic young women for lower genital tract infection with C. trachomatis in the prevention of PID and its major sequelae tubal infertility and ectopic pregnancy.
RESULTS: There is considerable literature describing screening for lower genital tract infection with C. trachomatis, but only two random

Bioterrorism is an emerging public health and infection control threat. Potential biological agents include smallpox, anthrax, plague, tularemia, botulinum toxin, brucellosis, Q fever, viral encephalitis, hemorrhagic fever, and staphylococcal enterotoxin B. An understanding of the epidemiology, clinical manifestations, and management of the more likely candidate agents is critical to limiting morbidity and mortality from a biological event. Effective response requires an increased index of suspicion for unusual diseases or syndromes, with prompt reporting to health authorities to facilitate re…
