The neural bases of host plant selection in a Neuroecology framework.

Understanding how animals make use of environmental information to guide behavior is a fundamental problem in the field of neuroscience. Similarly, the field of ecology seeks to understand the role of behavior in shaping interactions between organisms at various levels of organization, including population-, community- and even ecosystem-level scales. Together, the newly emerged field of "Neuroecology" seeks to unravel this fundamental question by studying both the function of neurons at many levels of the sensory pathway and the interactions between organisms and their natural environment. Information-seeking strategies of dental hygienists.

As health care practitioners, dental hygienists need information-gathering skills and the confidence to both perform literature searches in Internet databases and assess the results in order to utilize the wealth of scientific literature that supports evidence-based practice. The aim of this study was to assess the information-seeking strategies of dental hygienists. A self-administered electronic survey of thirty-eight questions was sent to 5,007 licensed dental hygienists in District III of the American Dental Hygienists' Association. The overall response rate was 7.9 percent (396/5,007). Mo

Anogenital warts and human papillomavirus: knowledge, perceived nuisance and risk perception in Dutch soldiers.

Genital warts are one of the most prevalent sexually transmitted infections in the Netherlands and cause both frustration and misinterpretation in young adults. Poor knowledge may be associated with shame and depression. We used questionnaires to study knowledge, perceived nuisance and risk perception in 100 predominantly heterosexual men with clinically-confirmed condylomata acuminata. Our data show that the majority of patients considered having warts as (very) bothersome. Results confirmed the Internet as a widely used information source. Incorrect information on the relationship between wa

"It's burning down there": A Mixed-Methods Study on Sexually Transmitted and Other Vaginal Infections Among Adolescent Girls and Young Women in South Africa.

OBJECTIVES: South Africa has one of the highest rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) globally, with adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) disproportionately affected due to intersecting biological, behavioral, structural, and social determinants. While HIV prevention receives sustained attention, other STIs remain under-addressed despite high prevalence and increased HIV transmission risk. This study explored STI- and vaginal infection-related knowledge, attitudes, experiences, and health-seeking behaviors among South African AGYW. METHODS: A convergent parallel mixed-methods app

Behavior of college students in public health emergencies based on IMB model.

The frequency of global public health emergencies has risen significantly in recent years. During the coronavirus disease pandemic, it was observed that a proportion of college students lacked essential scientific knowledge and failed to implement necessary preventive measures, underscoring the urgency for targeted behavioral interventions. This study applies the Information-Motivation-Behavioral Skills model to investigate college students' behavioral responses to public health emergencies. By quantifying the interplay between information, motivation, and behavioral skills, this research seek

Incremental levels of diagnostic information incentivize health-seeking in non-alcoholic fatty liver: a randomized clinical trial.

Patients with chronic disorders like non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) face important challenges adhering to diagnostic and treatment tracks. As NAFLD increases, the need to incentivize health-seeking behaviors grows. No evidence-based interventions to address this gap exist. The aim of the study was to estimate the effect of providing increasing levels of diagnostic information on medical care-seeking in adults newly diagnosed with NAFLD. We randomly assigned adults with a sonographic diagnosis of NAFLD at a check-up unit in Mexico to one of five groups. All groups received medical co

Distinct patterns of formal treatment and informal support strategies among U.S. college students with elevated symptoms of depression and/or anxiety: A cluster analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Elevated depressive and anxiety symptoms, as well as depressive and anxiety disorders, are prevalent among U.S. college students, yet formal mental health treatment use remains low. Informal support strategies, such as seeking help from non-professionals and using self-guided therapy, are common responses to distress that may function independently of or alongside formal treatment. This study aimed to characterize how college students with elevated depression and/or anxiety symptoms combine formal treatments with informal strategies. METHOD: Data were drawn from the 2022-2023 Healt

Examining the presence of problem gambling awareness messages on college counseling center websites.

College students are more at-risk for developing a gambling problem than the general adult U.S. population. Information behavior and information seeking theories, as well as empirical evidence, indicate that one resource that may provide guidance for students dealing with this issue is the college counseling center website (CCW). This study addressed the presence and nature of problem gambling messages on CCWs. As a random sample, 203 CCWs were selected to assess how frequently they provided any information about problem gambling, as well as the specific types of communications CCWs offered on

Etiological explanation, treatability and preventability of childhood autism: a survey of Nigerian healthcare workers' opinion.

BACKGROUND: Because of their peculiar sociocultural background, healthcare workers in sub-Saharan African subcultures may have various conceptions on different aspects of autism spectrum disorders (ASD), such as etiology, treatment and issues of prognosis. These various conceptions, if different from current knowledge in literature about ASD, may negatively influence help-seeking behavior of parents of children with ASD who seek advice and information from the healthcare workers. This study assessed the opinions of healthcare workers in Nigeria on aspects of etiology, treatability and preventa

Health-Seeking Behaviors After Acute Respiratory Infection Among Urban and Rural Residents and Different Age Groups: Cross-Sectional Questionnaire Study.

BACKGROUND: The choice of pathways in health-seeking behavior following acute respiratory infection (ARI) is critical for health care resource allocation, yet traditional logistic regression methods struggle to capture the dynamic evolution of such behaviors. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to quantify the dynamic process of changes in health-seeking behaviors following the onset of ARI and to identify differences in behavioral pathways associated with key factors such as urban-rural status and age. METHODS: This study used a multistate Markov model to quantify transition probabilities and inten

Astrocytic HIV-1 Nef expression decreases glutamate transporter expression in the nucleus accumbens and increases cocaine-seeking behavior in rats.

Cocaine use disorder is an intersecting issue in populations with HIV-1, further exacerbating the clinical course of the disease, contributing to neurotoxicity and neuroinflammation. Cocaine and HIV neurotoxins play roles in neuronal damage during neuroHIV progression by disrupting glutamate homeostasis in the brain. Even with cART, HIV-1 Nef, an early viral protein expressed in approximately 1% of infected astrocytes, remains a key neurotoxin. This study investigates the relationship that exists between Nef, glutamate homeostasis, and cocaine in the NAc, a critical brain region associated wit
