A new algorithm for distorted fingerprints matching based on normalized fuzzy similarity measure.

Coping with nonlinear distortions in fingerprint matching is a challenging task. This paper proposes a novel algorithm, normalized fuzzy similarity measure (NFSM), to deal with the nonlinear distortions. The proposed algorithm has two main steps. First, the template and input fingerprints were aligned. In this process, the local topological structure matching was introduced to improve the robustness of global alignment. Second, the method NFSM was introduced to compute the similarity between the template and input fingerprints. The proposed algorithm was evaluated on fingerprints databases of

Relevance of 2D radiographic texture analysis for the assessment of 3D bone micro-architecture.

Although the diagnosis of osteoporosis is mainly based on dual x-ray absorptiometry, it has been shown that trabecular bone micro-architecture is also an important factor in regard to fracture risk. In vivo, techniques based on high-resolution x-ray radiography associated to texture analysis have been proposed to investigate bone micro-architecture, but their relevance for giving pertinent 3D information is unclear. Thirty-three calcaneus and femoral neck bone samples including the cortical shells (diameter: 14 mm, height: 30-40 mm) were imaged using 3D-synchrotron x-ray micro-CT at the ESRF.

Switching time of nanowire memory.

Cadmium sulfide nanowires of 10-nm diameter, electrodeposited in porous anodic alumina films, exhibit an electronic bistability that can be harnessed for non-volatile memory. The current-voltage characteristics of the wires show two stable conductance states that are well-separated (conductances differ by more than 4 orders of magnitude) and long lived (longevity > 1 year at room temperature). These two states can encode binary bits 0 and 1. Here we report measurements of the switching time to switch from the high- to the low-conductance state. These measurements also shed some light on the ph

Association between rotavirus vaccination and intussusception in Australian children: A record linkage study.

BACKGROUND: Post-licensure surveillance studies have shown a small but increased risk of intussusception among infants in the days following rotavirus vaccination (RV). OBJECTIVES: We assessed the temporal trends of intussusception-coded hospitalisations before and after the commencement of a universal rotavirus vaccination programme in Western Australia (WA) in 2007. We also assessed the perinatal factors and pathogens associated with these hospitalisations. METHODS: Intussusception-coded hospitalisations occurring in a cohort of 367 476 WA-born children (2000-2012) aged <5 years were proba

Quantifying maternal incarceration: a whole-population linked data study of Western Australian children born 1985-2011.

OBJECTIVE: To measure the prevalence of children affected by maternal incarceration in Western Australia (WA). METHODS: Using linked administrative data we identified all children born in WA between 1985 and 2011, whose biological mother was imprisoned during their childhood. Data was obtained through the WA Data Linkage Branch from the Department of Corrective Services, Midwives Notifications System and Birth Registrations data collections. Descriptive characteristics of the children (n=9,352) and their mothers (n=3,827) are reported. Prevalence was measured in two-ways, the proportion of ch

A closer look at travellers' infections abroad: Finnish nationwide data with incidences, 2010 to 2012.

BACKGROUND: Although infections represent the most common health problem of travellers abroad, data on morbidity and incidences of various infections are scarce. METHOD: Data on infections of Finnish travellers during 2010-2012 were retrieved from the database of SOS International, an assistance organization covering 95% of Finns requiring aid abroad. The study included 30,086 cases. For incidence calculation, the data were linked to the numbers of Finns visiting these regions during the same period as recorded by the Official Statistics of Finland. RESULTS: The incidence of infections was p

Underreporting of maternal mortality in Taiwan: A data linkage study.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the extent to which maternal mortality in Taiwan is underreported in officially published mortality statistics. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used National Health Insurance claims data collected from two million samples, which were linked with the officially published mortality data, to identify women aged 15-49 years, who were admitted to a hospital with pregnancy-related diagnoses during 2000-2009 and died during the pregnancy or within 42 days after the termination of pregnancy. RESULTS: Based on these linked data, we identified 26 maternal deaths, only nine of

Quantitative accuracy of MAP reconstruction for dynamic PET imaging in small animals.

PURPOSE: Iterative reconstruction algorithms are becoming more commonly employed in positron emission tomography (PET) imaging; however, the quantitative accuracy of the reconstructed images still requires validation for various levels of contrast and counting statistics. METHODS: The authors present an evaluation of the quantitative accuracy of the 3D maximum a posteriori (3D-MAP) image reconstruction algorithm for dynamic PET imaging with comparisons to two of the most widely used reconstruction algorithms: the 2D filtered-backprojection (2D-FBP) and 2D-ordered subsets expectation maximizat

How do I find a point-of-care answer to my clinical question?

Emergency physicians often need point-of-care access to current, valid information to guide patient management. Most emergency physicians do not work in a hospital with a computerized decision support system that prompts and provides them with information to answer their clinical questions. Searching for answers to clinical questions online, especially those related to diagnosis and treatment, can be challenging, in part because determining the validity and clinical applicability of the results of individual studies is beyond the time constraints of most emergency physicians. On algorithmic rate-coded AER generation.

This paper addresses the problem of converting a conventional video stream based on sequences of frames into the spike event-based representation known as the address-event-representation (AER). In this paper we concentrate on rate-coded AER. The problem is addressed as an algorithmic problem, in which different methods are proposed, implemented and tested through software algorithms. The proposed algorithms are comparatively evaluated according to different criteria. Emphasis is put on the potential of such algorithms for a) doing the frame-based to event-based representation in real time, an

Real-time gesture recognition by learning and selective control of visual interest points.

For the real-time recognition of unspecified gestures by an arbitrary person, a comprehensive framework is presented that addresses two important problems in gesture recognition systems: selective attention and processing frame rate. To address the first problem, we propose the Quadruple Visual Interest Point Strategy. No assumptions are made with regard to scale or rotation of visual features, which are computed from dynamically changing regions of interest in a given image sequence. In this paper, each of the visual features is referred to as a visual interest point, to which a probability d

Identifying respiratory findings in emergency department reports for biosurveillance using MetaMap.

Clinical conditions described in patients' dictated reports are necessary for automated detection of patients with respiratory illnesses such as inhalational anthrax and pneumonia. We applied MetaMap to emergency department reports to extract a set of 71 clinical conditions relevant to detection of a lower respiratory outbreak. We indexed UMLS terms in emergency department reports with MetaMap, filtered the indexed output with a specialized lexicon of UMLS terms for the domain, and mapped the clinical conditions of interest to concepts in the lexicon. We compared MetaMap's ability to accuratel

The effect of age on the use of health and self-care information: confronting the stereotype.

PURPOSE: Given stereotypes of older adults, there is the perception that older adults will not use health information technologies. One concern is that practitioners might shy away from providing older patients with health information, and in particular, computerized information. The study's primary objective was to evaluate whether a health information intervention had a differential effect for people of different ages. DESIGN AND METHODS: Quasi-experimental survey data from an assessment of a communitywide informational intervention were used. People were asked about their use of medical re

Heat induced epitope retrieval for rabies virus detection by direct fluorescent antibody test in formalin-fixed dog brain tissues.

There is a great need for a chemical method of tissue preservation that would allow sample storage for extended periods at room temperature. This study aimed at retrieving and detecting rabies virus antigen by direct fluorescent antibody test (DFAT) in formalin-fixed dog brain tissues. Forty fresh dog brain specimens were collected as paired samples from rabies suspected cases that were received for postmortem detection of rabies in the Central Diagnostic Laboratory, National Veterinary Research Institute, Vom. One portion of each paired sample was prepared for fresh fluorescent antibody testi

Informatics in the care of patients: ten notable challenges.

What is medical informatics, and why should practicing physicians care about it? Medical informatics is the study of the concepts and conceptual relationships within biomedical information and how they can be harnessed for practical applications. In the past decade, the field has exploded as health professionals recognize the importance of strategic information management and the inadequacies of traditional tools for information storage, retrieval, and analysis. At the same time that medical informatics has established a presence within many academic and industrial research facilities, its goa

The cognitive and neural bases of creative thought: A cross-domain systematic review and meta-analysis of transcranial direct current stimulation studies.

Creative thought enables humans to flexibly generate, evaluate and select novel and adaptive ideas across different contexts. Decades of research indicates that it involves two key aspects: retrieval of previously acquired knowledge and manipulation of that knowledge. However, the cognitive processes underpinning these aspects remain underspecified. The broader clinical-cognitive neuroscience literature suggests these functions rely on general-purpose cognitive mechanisms supporting semantic cognition, controlled episodic memory retrieval, and executive mechanisms. Transcranial direct current

Family history of breast cancer as a second primary malignancy in relatives: a nationwide cohort study.

BACKGROUND: With the increasing number of breast cancer (BC) diagnosed as a second primary malignancy after a first primary non-breast cancer (BCa-2), it is unclear about the familial risk of BC among women with a first-degree relative (FDR, parents or siblings) affected by a BCa-2. METHODS: In this Swedish nationwide cohort study, 5315 women with a FDR affected by BCa-2 and 115,048 women with a FDR affected by BC as the first primary cancer (BCa-1) were followed for the first primary invasive BC diagnosis. Relative risk (RR) of BC was estimated through Poisson regression by using 2,743,777 w
