Several studies have confirmed that the volatile oil of Rhododendron anthopogonoides Maxim has good anti-insect activity and is expected to become an environmentally friendly botanical insecticide, with benzylacetone as its main active component. Benzylacetone has a simple chemical structure, containing only three elements of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen, low toxicity, and easy degradation. Therefore, in this study, benzylacetone and its seven structural analogues were selected for testing their anti-insect activity to Tribolium castaneum Herbst (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), in order to explore

The whitefly Bemisia tabaci(Gennadius) MEAM 1 is one of the main insect species that colonize tomato plants and cause direct and indirect damage. The use of botanical derivatives may be a valuable method of insect control to reduce the inappropriate use of synthetic insecticides on crops. In this study, we evaluated the bioactivity of ethanolic extracts prepared from Annonaceae species compared to that of the commercial insecticides based on acetogenins (Anosom® 1 EC, anonine 10,000 mg L-1) and thiamethoxam (Actara® 250 WG) on eggs, nymphs, and adults of the whitefly in tomato. Initially, the

Insect toxins comprise a diverse array of chemicals ranging from small molecules, polyamines and peptide toxins. Many target nervous system and neuromuscular ion channels and so rapidly affect the behaviour of animals to which the toxin is applied or injected. Other modes of action have also been identified. Wasps, bees, flies, beetles and ants generate a rich arsenal of channel-active toxins, some of which offer selective pharmacological probes that target particular ion channels, while others act on more than one type of channel. Philanthotoxins from the digger wasp have been fruitful in add

BACKGROUND: African trypanosomes cause lethal diseases in humans and animals and escape host immune attack by switching the expression of Variant Surface Glycoprotein (VSG) genes. The expressed VSGs are located at the ends of telomeric, polycistronic transcription units known as VSG expression sites (VSG-ESs). Each cell has many VSG-ESs but only one is transcribed in bloodstream-form parasites and all of them are inactive upon transmission to the insect vector mid-gut; a subset of monocistronic metacyclic VSG-ESs are then activated in the insect salivary gland. Deep-sequence analyses have been

Tx4(6-1) a neurotoxic peptide from the venom of the aggressive South American 'armed' spider Phoneutria nigriventer, has been previously isolated and sequenced. It shows no detectable activity in mice but affects the peripheral nervous system of insects by stimulating glutamate release at the neuromuscular junction. Here we investigate possible interactions of the toxin with voltage-activated sodium channels (Na(v)). We confirm that it is ineffective on mammalian Na(v) channels, and establish that it competes with the alpha-like toxin 125I-Bom IV, for binding on the site 3 of insect Na(v) chan

Antibodies to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) proteins can predict nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) risk. We previously defined a prototype EBNA1 protein panel and multiplex immunoblot assay that distinguishes NPC risk several years pre-diagnosis. Assay throughput and specificity are critical to effectively implement a population-level screening program. Here, we developed a strip test assay-EBNA1 SeroStrip-HT-with an objective to increase throughput and maximize specificity. EBNA1 full-length (FL) and glycine-alanine repeat deletion mutants (dGAr) were purified from insect and mammalian cells to scree

A critical understanding of how pests interact with active ingredients is essential for the development of new insect control solutions to maintain crop quality and quantity by reducing insect damage. Absorption of insecticides into insect bodies of targeted pest species is the first critical step that confounds the efficacy of insecticides. This study investigated how different feeding behaviour of two pests, Myzus persicae and Spodoptera littoralis, affects the absorption, metabolism, and excretion (AME) of seven insecticidally inactive test compounds. A feeding contact assay for the chewing

The symbiotic Wolbachia are the most sophisticated mutualistic bacterium among all insect-associated microbiota. Wolbachia-insect relationship fluctuates from the simple facultative/parasitic to an obligate nutritional-mutualistic association as it was the case of the bedbug-Wolbachia from Cimexlectularius. Understanding this association may help in the control of associated arthropods. Genomic data have proven to be reliable tools in resolving some aspects of these symbiotic associations. Although, Wolbachia appear to be fastidious or uncultivated bacteria which strongly limited their study.

Lutzomyia longipalpis (Diptera: Psychodidae) is the principal vector of American visceral leishmaniasis. Several studies have indicated that the Lu. longipalpis population structure is complex. It has been suggested that genetic divergence caused by genetic drift, selection, or both may affect the vectorial capacity of Lu. longipalpis. However, it remains unclear whether genetic differences among Lu. longipalpis populations are directly implicated in the transmission features of visceral leishmaniasis. We evaluated the genetic composition and the patterns of genetic differentiation among Lu. l

An important vector control program is ongoing to lower the risk of malaria transmission in the French military camp of Port-Bouët, Abidjan (Côte d'Ivoire). However, some autochthonous malaria cases are regularly suspected. An entomological survey was conducted in June 2004 in the camp to assess malaria transmission and evaluate the pyrethroid and organophosphate resistance of the malaria vectors. The average mosquito biting rate was 178.0 bites per person per night. Mosquitoes belonging to the Anopheles gambiae (Diptera: Culicidae) complex and the Anopheles funestus group were collected. An.

BACKGROUND: Former Onchocerciasis Control Programme countries like Senegal have made important progress towards eliminating onchocerciasis. Senegal has engaged in post-mass drug administration (MDA) activities, mainly entomological surveillance, but the country initially struggled to collect the recommended number of blackflies in all the country's transmission zones. Here, we implemented a simple approach in the entomological surveillance protocol to increase the number of Simulium damnosum collected.
METHODS: The study was conducted over two consecutive years, 2022 and 2023, in the main S.

Every year, over 700,000 people, particularly children under five, die from vector-borne diseases worldwide. Effectively controlling endemics and preventing new outbreaks requires an integrated approach that can lead to the elimination of both vectors and diseases. In the last two decades, integrating medical interventions and vector control has significantly reduced the incidence of Gambian Human African Trypanosomiasis (g-HAT), with the World Health Organization validating eight countries as having eliminated the disease as a public health problem. However, elimination of the tsetse vector h

BACKGROUND: The Gran Chaco Region of Argentina, a hotspot for neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) including Chagas disease (CD), has undergone significant landscape transformations due to deforestation and agricultural expansion. These changes have altered the dynamics of Triatoma infestans, the primary vector of Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of CD. This study investigates the association between environmental changes and vector infestation patterns in a rural area of Añatuya, Santiago del Estero, Argentina, under continuous surveillance and control since 2005.
METHODS: Entomological

Transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi involves diverse hosts, vectors and parasitic genotypes, in different environments. In recent decades, the distribution of T. cruzi has altered due to urbanization of affected people and vectors. We implemented a longitudinal intervention program between 2015 and 2022 which aimed to suppress (peri)domestic Triatoma infestans in the municipality of Avia Terai (Chaco Province, Argentina), and found a marginal risk of domestic vector-borne transmission across the rural-to-urban gradient after interventions. Here, we identified the parasite Discrete Typing Units (

BACKGROUND: Efforts to eliminate visceral leishmaniasis in India mainly consist of early detection and treatment of cases and indoor residual spraying with insecticides to kill the phlebotomine sandfly Phlebotomus argentipes that transmits the causative Leishmania protozoa. In this modelling study, we aimed to estimate the effect of indoor residual spraying (IRS) on vector abundance and transmission of visceral leishmaniasis in India.
METHODS: In this time-series analysis and modelling study, we assessed the effect of IRS on vector abundance by using indoor vector-abundance data (from 2016 to

Attention is increasingly focusing on how best to accelerate progress toward meeting the WHO's 2030 goals for neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). For river blindness, a major NTD targeted for elimination, there is a long history of using vector control to suppress transmission, but traditional larvicide-based approaches are limited in their utility. One innovative and sustainable approach, "slash and clear", involves clearing vegetation from breeding areas, and recent field trials indicate that this technique very effectively reduces the biting density of Simulium damnosum s.s. In this study,

BACKGROUND: Protecting people outdoors against mosquito-borne diseases is a major challenge. Here we compared commercially available personal protection methods to identify the most effective method for outdoor use in northern Lao PDR.
METHODS: From June to August 2016 the protective efficacy of treatments were compared in a secondary forest during the afternoon and a village during the evening. Comparisons were made using a replicated Latin square design between: (i) short permethrin-treated overalls; (ii) long permethrin-treated overalls; (iii) short untreated overalls with para-menthane-3,

BACKGROUND: Gambian sleeping sickness (human African trypanosomiasis, HAT) outbreaks are brought under control by case detection and treatment although it is recognised that this typically only reaches about 75% of the population. Vector control is capable of completely interrupting HAT transmission but is not used because it is considered too expensive and difficult to organise in resource-poor settings. We conducted a full scale field trial of a refined vector control technology to determine its utility in control of Gambian HAT.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: The major vector of Gambian HAT is the
