Sarcoidosis is a systemic inflammatory disease of an unknown origin and it is characterized by the presence of noncaseating epitheloid cell granulomas in multiple organs. Herein we report on a case of cutaneous and pulmonary sarcoidosis that was associated with interferon alpha treatment for hepatitis C. A 39-year-old man, a former intravenous drug user, presented with several erythematous papules on both antecubital areas. The histopathologic finding of a skin biopsy showed noncaseating granuloma. Sarcoidosis is an increasingly well-recognised complication of interferon therapy for hepatitis C infection, primarily manifesting with cutaneous or pulmonary involvement. However, we present an unusual case of sarcoid-related dacryoadenitis in a 67-year-old Caucasian lady following such treatment. The literature relating to ophthalmic presentations of interferon-related sarcoidosis is reviewed, and the potential for confusion with interferon-induced thyroid- associated orbitopathy is discussed.

Many apparently healthy cows show marked inflammatory conditions around calving, associated with endocrine and metabolic changes. To prevent the above conditions, a low-dose, oral interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) treatment was carried out on periparturient, multiparous dairy cows. In this study we explored the possibility of improving the anti-tumor potency of tumor-targeted superantigens (TTS) by combination treatment with interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha). TTS utilizes the powerful T cell activating property of the superantigen staphylococcal enterotoxin A (SEA) in fusion with an anti-tumor Fab-fragment to target this T cell activity against tumor cells. BACKGROUND: A regimen including interferon-alpha has become the standard of care in the treatment of chronic hepatitis C over the last decade. One rare adverse effect associated with the use of interferon-alpha is a granulomatous pulmonary reaction.
CASE: A unique case of uterine sarcoidosis associated with the use of interferon-alpha for chronic hepatitis C infection is presented.
CONCLUSION: Gynecologists should be aware of a potential association between interferon-alpha therapy and granulomatous reactions occurring not only in the lung but also in the female genital tract.

Intravesical Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) immunotherapy is currently the optimal choice for aggressive superficial bladder cancer, with a 70% response rate. This study investigated whether the antitumour response elicited by BCG could be improved by the addition of recombinant interferon alpha (IFN alpha) in the subcutaneous murine MB49 bladder tumour model. BACKGROUND: Mycosis fungoides is a lymphoma of cutaneous origin characterized by a proliferation of cells with a T phenotype.
METHODS: In this pilot study, 13 men with mycosis fungoides in various stages were treated with alpha-2b interferon and etretinate.
RESULTS: In ten of them, such a therapy proved to be effective (7 complete responses, 3 partial responses), sometimes with prolonged remissions (up to 20 months, and still persistent) after suspension of the drugs.
