All views my own? Portraying the voices of children with complex neurodevelopmental disorders in statutory documents.

Portraying the voices of children with complex genetic neurodevelopmental disorders about their health, care and education needs in their statutory documents is a challenging task. This study examined the ways by which the perspectives of children diagnosed with Down Syndrome (DS) and Williams Syndrome (WS) are portrayed in their statutory documents, namely the Education Health and Care plans, in England. Using the International Classification of Functioning Disability and Health for Children and Youth, we analysed the content of Section A of the Education Health and Care plans of 52 children

Timed mobility: description of measurement, performance, and dimensionality among older adults.

PURPOSE: To describe the measurement, performance, and dimensionality of five timed mobility activities completed by older adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cross-sectional observational study using correlational and factor analysis to examine the dimensionality of five timed mobility activities performed by 189 older adults in an outpatient setting. RESULTS: The times to complete supine-to-sit, five repetition sit-to-stand, 8 m comfortable gait, four step ascent, and four step descent were correlated significantly with one another (r = 0.294-0.827, p < 0.001). Effects of serious games in strength and functionality of patients with ulnar nerve lesion: two single-case reports.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of serious games on hand muscle strength and functionality in a series of cases with ulnar nerve damage. Two patients were included in this 16-week intervention study using biofeedback. Electromyography electrodes and dynamometers were used in treatment. Functionality was assessed by Rosen and Lundborg score, Disabilities of the arm, shoulder and hand (DASH) questionnaire and International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). Grip and pinch strength were assessed by dynamometers. Results revealed an increase in se…

Influencing factors on instrumental activities of daily living functioning in people with mild cognitive disorder - a secondary investigation of cross-sectional data.

BACKGROUND: Finding a strategy to reduce the impact of cognitive decline on everyday functioning in persons suffering from cognitive impairment is a public health priority. Instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) are key to everyday functioning. Hence, it is essential to understand the influencing factors on IADL to develop specific interventions to improve everyday functioning in persons with mild cognitive disorder. Therefore, this study aimed to 1) explore different influencing factors on IADL functioning considering all domains of the International Classification of Functioning, dis

Factors influencing perceived function in the upper limb prosthesis user population.

BACKGROUND: Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) can be used to evaluate perceived capacity of an individual in executing tasks in a natural environment with their prosthetic device. According to the World Health Organization International Classification of Health, Functioning, and Disability (ICF) models, there may be specific factors of a person, factors of assistive prosthetic technology, or factors related to the health condition or body function that affect their functioning and disability. However, an understanding of factors affecting an upper limb prosthesis user's perception of their abil

Assessing activity limitations in patients with neuromuscular diseases: is the ACTIVLIM questionnaire linked to ICF and ICF-CY?

The objective of this study was to explore to what extent the ACTIVLIM questionnaire, designed to evaluate limitations in activities involving upper and lower limbs in adults and children with neuromuscular diseases, is linked to the domains of the Activities and Participation of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF), and to its Children and Youth version (ICF-CY). Standardized ICF linking rules were applied. Items were linked to the most specific ICF-CY codes (e.g. d4501 - Walking long distances), and rolling-up procedures were applied to report informat…

Hearing and Functioning in Everyday Life Questionnaire: Development and Validation of an ICF-Based Instrument.

OBJECTIVES: Self-assessment instruments are commonly used in audiological rehabilitation. However, several studies highlight the lack of multidimensionality in existing outcome measures, with the consequence that they only partially capture aspects of functioning in everyday life for people living with hearing loss. This study aimed to develop and investigate the content validity of a self-assessment instrument based on the validated Brief International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health Core Set for Hearing Loss. DESIGN: The design was a two-part instrument development stu

The meaning of participation for children in Malawi: insights from children and caregivers.

BACKGROUND: Global rates of childhood disability are high and are estimated through tools that focus on impairment, functioning and activity. The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health has promoted a framework to define disability more broadly and to include participation. New outcome measures have now been created to assess participation of children with disabilities for use in research and clinical practice. In order to use these in other cultural contexts, the validity of concepts and tools developed should be evaluated prior to use. We aim to create a tool that …

The Life Impact Burn Recovery Evaluation (LIBRE) Profile: Historical Overview and Future Directions.

The Life Impact Burn Recovery Evaluation (LIBRE) Profile was developed to assess long-term social participation outcomes for adult burn survivors. Traditional clinical burn recovery outcomes focus on early physical complications and psychosocial issues, but there is a growing need for quantitative measures of long-term recovery that assess experiences deemed relevant to burn survivors. The LIBRE Profile, co-produced with input from burn survivors and clinicians and grounded in the World Health Organization's International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (WHO-ICF) conceptua…

Anxiety disorders.

Anxiety disorders constitute the largest group of mental disorders in most western societies and are a leading cause of disability. The essential features of anxiety disorders are excessive and enduring fear, anxiety or avoidance of perceived threats, and can also include panic attacks. Although the neurobiology of individual anxiety disorders is largely unknown, some generalizations have been identified for most disorders, such as alterations in the limbic system, dysfunction of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and genetic factors. In addition, general risk factors for anxiety disorder
