How the Rise of Problematic Pornography Consumption and the COVID-19 Pandemic Has Led to a Decrease in Physical Sexual Interactions and Relationships and an Increase in Addictive Behaviors and Cluster B Personality Traits: A Meta-Analysis.

On January 13, 2018, an alert was sent to Hawaii's people that a missile was heading toward them. People were in a state of alarm for 30 minutes before the government sent out a false alarm statement. Fifteen minutes after the message that told the people of Hawaii that they were not in danger went out, Pornhub's views spiked by 48%. On March 11, 2020, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was designated a pandemic. By March 25, 2020, Pornhub's views had spiked to over 24%. We took the research available on problematic pornography consumption, also referred to as internet sex addiction, pornogra

Physical exercise moderates the mediating effect of sleep quality between internet addiction and college students' academic burnout.

Internet addiction is a significant contributing factor to academic burnout among college students, though the underlying psychological and behavioral mechanisms warrant further investigation. This study investigated the mediating role of sleep quality between internet addiction and college students' academic burnout, as well as the moderating role of physical exercise on this mediation pathway. A study was conducted to assess internet addiction, sleep quality, academic burnout, and physical exercise among college students. Descriptive statistics and correlation analyses were performed on thes

Interdependent relationship between depression and Internet gaming disorder in parent-child dyads: The mediating role of family relationship and gaming time.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: A well-established link exists between depression and Internet gaming disorder (IGD) at the individual level, while it remains unexplored within the family system. This study aims to investigate the interdependent relationship between parent and adolescent depression and IGD, and to identify the potential mechanisms. METHODS: A cross-sectional dyadic study was conducted with adolescents and their parents (primary caregiver) in Hong Kong. Adolescents completed anonymous surveys in classrooms, and parents completed online surveys via WhatsApp or phone interviews. The A

The association between school bullying and internet addiction among adolescents: a moderated mediation model.

BACKGROUND: School bullying poses a serious threat to the mental well-being of adolescents. Although previous research has demonstrated a link between school bullying and internet addiction, the psychological mechanism remains poorly understood. This study aimed to explore the mediating roles of depressive and anxiety symptoms, as well as the moderating role of the stigma of mental illness. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey among 82,873 middle and high school, college, and university students in Sichuan Province, China, was conducted for this study. Moderated mediation models were examined us

The association between sedentary behavior, internet addiction, and body composition among Chinese college students: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has suggested that high levels of internet use are associated with lower levels of physical activity. However, recent studies have yielded mixed findings. AIMS: First, we aim to explore the prevalence of internet addiction and sedentary behavior among college students. Second, we examine the relationship between sedentary behavior and body composition. Additionally, we employ latent profile analysis (LPA) to identify subgroups of internet addiction profiles and to explore the associations between these latent profiles and sedentary behavior. METHOD: This cross-s

Substance Use and Addictive Behavior in Spanish Adolescents in Secondary School.

The detection and prevention of addictive behaviour at an early age is essential given the relationship between the age of the onset of consumption and the appearance of addiction disorders. The aim of this study was to describe the behavior related to substance use and addictive behaviors in adolescents at secondary school from 12 to 16 years of age. A cross-sectional descriptive study has been conducted. The prevalence of consumption of different addictive substances (alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, cocaine) and addictive behaviours (use of social networks and video games) were collated, and the

Nonsuicidal Self-Injury: Its Associations With Pathological Internet Use and Psychopathology Among Adolescents.

BACKGROUND/HYPOTHESES: As risk factors for nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI), most studies highlight the importance of internalising disorders, while only a few researches show the connection between externalising disorders and NSSI. Although some papers have introduced the idea that increasing prevalence rates of NSSI are connected to the broader use of the internet, associations between NSSI and pathological internet use (PIU) are understudied. According to our hypothesis, there is a connection between PIU and NSSI, but this is mediated by psychopathological factors from both internalising and

Behavioural addictions in bipolar disorder patients: role of impulsivity and personality dimensions.

BACKGROUND: Behavioural addictions (BAs) can be understood as disorders characterized by repetitive occurrence of impulsive and uncontrolled behaviours. Very few studies have investigated their association with mood disorders. The present study was undertaken to determine the prevalence of the main behavioural addictions in a sample of bipolar outpatients in euthymic phase or stabilised by medications and to investigate the role of impulsivity and temperamental and character dimensions. METHODS: One-hundred-fifty-eight Bipolar Disorder (BD) (DSM-IV) outpatients were assessed with tests design

Mindfulness-based and mindfulness-informed interventions for internet use disorders in adolescents and young adults: A three-level random-effects meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The pervasive integration of the internet into daily life has rendered Internet Use Disorders (IUDs) a particular threat to adolescents and young adults, whose vulnerability is amplified by a developmental stage characterized by ongoing neurodevelopment and self-exploration. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the efficacy of mindfulness-based and mindfulness-informed interventions (MBIIs) for this population. METHODS: Seven databases were searched from inception to April 2026 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Risk of bias was assessed using the Revis

Cardiovascular and pulmonary response in Internet gaming disorder: A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) is a behavioral addiction characterized by impaired control over gaming. While its psychological aspects are well-documented, its physiological correlates, particularly those governed by the autonomic nervous system (ANS), are less well-synthesized. Heart rate variability (HRV) and pulmonary function are key indicators of cardiorespiratory health and ANS regulation. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the impact of IGD on chronotropic (as measured by HRV) and ventilatory responses, both at rest and during active gaming. METHODS: We searched Pu

The moderating effect of resting heart rate variability on the relationship between internet addiction tendency and brain morphology.

Previous neuroimaging studies have investigated brain morphology associated with internet addiction tendency (IAT) in healthy subjects. However, whether resting vagally-mediated heart rate variability (HRV) exerting influences on the association of IAT and brain morphology remains unclear. This study used voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and multiple regression analyses to assess the interaction effect of IAT and resting vagally-mediated HRV on regional grey matter volumes in 82 healthy subjects. To further illustrate the observed interaction effect, the moderated hierarchical regression analysis

The imperative of integrating empirical and theoretical considerations when developing policy responses to Internet-gaming disorder.

This commentary proposes an integrative approach of theoretical and empirical considerations when developing policy responses to Internet-gaming disorder and when evaluating their efficacy. It complements the overview by Király et al. (2018) about preventive and treatment programs by referring to a lack of inclusion of internal factors, such as individual aspects and cognitions, and missing empirical evidence. This commentary claims the integration of current research addressing individual predisposing and maintaining factors in order to evaluate existing programs and to enhance the exchange b

Stress psychobiology in the context of addiction medicine: from drugs of abuse to behavioral addictions.

In this chapter, we briefly review the basic biology of psychological stress and the stress response. We propose that psychological stress and the neurobiology of the stress response play in substance use initiation, maintenance, and relapse. The proposed mechanisms for this include, on the one hand, the complex interactions between biological mediators of the stress response and the dopaminergic reward system and, on the other hand, mediators of the stress response and other systems crucial in moderating key addiction-related behaviors such as endogenous opioids, the sympathetic-adrenal-medul
