Metacognitive interpersonal therapy-eating disorders versus cognitive behavioral therapy for eating disorders for non-underweight adults with eating disorders: study protocol for a pilot pre-registered randomized controlled trial.

Eating disorders (ED) are serious disorders characterized by an alteration of eating habits and excessive concern about weight and body shapes (Fairburn, 2002), accompanied by significant impairment inequality of life, high mortality rates and serious organic consequences (Jenkins et al., 2011; Treasure et al., 2015; 2020). Although evidence-based psychological therapies for nonunderweight ED presentations such as cognitive behavioral therapy for eating disorders (CBT-ED) are widely available, there is substantial scope for improvements, particularly in terms of efficacy and adherence. A self psychological and relational approach to group therapy for university students with bulimia.

Bulimia is a complex disorder that can significantly interfere with psychosocial functioning. It is a particularly significant problem among adolescents and young women in college and university settings. The preponderance of literature on group therapeutic approaches for this disorder is from a cognitive-behavioral perspective. In this paper, we present a psychodynamic group therapy approach for female university students, informed specifically by self psychological and relational frameworks. Through clinical illustrations, we demonstrate how the group provides selfobject experiences, includi

Group outpatient physical and behavioral therapy for chronic low back pain.

Conducted a treatment-outcome study to investigate the effectiveness of behavioral (BT) or physical therapy (PT) for treating chronic low back pain (CLBP). Thirteen patients received BT; 12 patients received PT. All patients had at least a 6-month history of seeking treatment of CLBP. Prior to treatment patients were assessed in four principal areas of functioning: (1) physical abilities; (2) current physical functioning; (3) psychological and psychosocial functioning; and (4) pain intensity and pain perception. Treatments were conducted in a group (5-8 patients) outpatient setting. Both BT an

Reactive affective cycles and lithium: a caveat.

The author has been referred increasing numbers of patients who were inappropriately treated with Lithium for cyclic "depressions" which were in fact reactive-depressive episodes resulting from cyclic patterns of interpersonal behavior. This paper gives two case reports to demonstrate the phenomenon of reactive-affective cycles, their clinical presentations and the problems arising from treatment with medications. The structure of cycles of interpersonal behavior and their presentation in therapy is described and treatment strategies are suggested.

Equine-assisted psychotherapy: a mental health promotion/intervention modality for children who have experienced intra-family violence.

Equine-assisted psychotherapy (EAP) is a specialized form of psychotherapy using the horse as a therapeutic tool. This modality is designed to address self-esteem and personal confidence, communication and interpersonal effectiveness, trust, boundaries and limit-setting, and group cohesion. Substantial numbers of children witness family violence. There is evidence that violence between parents has adverse effects on the children in the family. These children are at greater risk of behavioural problems and mental health disorders, including anxiety, anger, depression and suicidal ideations, wit

"I am Borderline": Psychiatric Diagnosis, Identity, Self-Presentation, and Digital Culture in Borderline Personality Disorder.

BACKGROUND: The psychiatrization of borderline personality disorder (BPD) has expanded beyond clinical contexts into identity formation, interpersonal regulation, and digital self-presentation. For individuals with BPD-whose psychopathology centrally involves identity diffusion-the diagnostic label may function not only as an explanatory framework but also as a stabilizing, defensive, or performative identity resource, particularly within online environments. OBJECTIVES: This article aims to examine how individuals with BPD integrate psychiatric diagnosis into their self-concept, to identify

Group Cognitive Behavioral Analysis System of Psychotherapy (CBASP): A Pilot Study for Bipolar Depression.

OBJECTIVES: Cognitive Behavioral Analysis System of Psychotherapy (CBASP) is an individually administered treatment model designed specifically for Persistent Depression however bipolar patients have traditionally been excluded from CBASP studies. There is a perception that bipolar depression will be harder to treat and requires a unique psychological approach. This pilot study reports on the feasibility of administering the same 20-week manualized group CBASP therapy with bipolar patients currently in a depressive episode. METHODS: This non-randomized, single-arm prospective pilot study, rep

Group psychotherapy for parents of patients with borderline personality disorder: Βasic assumptions and group containing function.

Patients with borderline personality disorders (BPD) have great difficulties with interpersonal relations. Their extreme difficulties with interpersonal relations are illustrated in psychic family interaction. Parents become the recipients of conflicts and patient's aggressive behaviour, while family stress increases due to suicidal tendency, self-injuries and substance abuse. The current report presents the introduction of group psychotherapy for parents of young adult patients with BPD, treated in a special unit of personality disorders at Eginition Hospital. The aim is, through the parallel

Treatment of depressive disorders in primary care--protocol of a multiple treatment systematic review of randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Several systematic reviews have summarized the evidence for specific treatments of primary care patients suffering from depression. However, it is not possible to answer the question how the available treatment options compare with each other as review methods differ. We aim to systematically review and compare the available evidence for the effectiveness of pharmacological, psychological, and combined treatments for patients with depressive disorders in primary care. METHODS/DESIGN: To be included, studies have to be randomized trials comparing antidepressant medication (tricycli

Psychosocial interventions in stimulant use disorders: a systematic review and qualitative synthesis of randomized controlled trials.

Stimulant use disorders are highly prevalent with a large burden of disease. Most clinical guidelines recommend psychosocial interventions, but there are no clear hierarchies or indications. Moreover, these interventions have been reported unevenly in the literature. Identifying the most suitable treatment for each patient therefore represents a major challenge. In this review, we describe all psychosocial interventions for stimulant use disorders investigated in randomized controlled trials - including contingency management, cognitive behavioral interventions, community reinforcement approac

Unmet needs of bipolar disorder patients.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a serious mental illness with adverse impact on the lives of the patients and their caregivers. BD is associated with many limitations in personal and interpersonal functioning and restricts the patients' ability to use their potential capabilities fully. Bipolar patients long to live meaningful lives, but this goal is hard to achieve for those with poor insight. With progress and humanization of society, the issue of patients' needs became an important topic. The objective of the paper is to provide the up-to-date data on the unmet needs of BD patients and

Developing the nuclear idea: concept, technique, and process.

I introduce an approach to group that has remained undeveloped in the literature, but represents an essence of relationally oriented group psychotherapy. Evolving from the verbalizations and enactments through which the group symbolizes and becomes known-a nuclear idea takes shape. It emerges from the nucleus of the group process: co-created from intersubjective forces and locations that cannot be fully specified, yet may be possible to observe, name, and utilize clinically. Groups organize themselves by developing nuclear ideas, with the therapist's active participation. They are vehicles thr

A randomized trial of interpersonal therapy versus supportive therapy for social anxiety disorder.

Seventy patients seeking treatment for social anxiety disorder (SAD) were randomly assigned to 14 weekly individual sessions of interpersonal therapy (IPT) or supportive therapy (ST). We hypothesized that IPT, a psychotherapy with established efficacy for depression and other psychiatric disorders, would lead to greater improvement than ST. Patients in both groups experienced significant improvement from pretreatment to posttreatment. However, improvement with IPT was not superior to improvement with ST. Mean scores on the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale decreased from 67.7 to 46.9 in the IPT g

The "gift of love" as a candidate mechanism of psychopathology and change in interpersonal reconstructive therapy for patients with high-acuity clinical needs.

A key mechanism of psychopathology and change proposed by the theory of interpersonal reconstructive therapy (IRT; Benjamin, 2003, 2018) is termed the "gift of love" (GOL). The GOL hypothesis is that wishes to receive love and acceptance from specific internalized attachment figures shape and maintain problem patterns and their associated symptoms for many patients across a wide range of psychopathology. According to IRT theory, optimal intervention is defined by therapist alignment, or "adherence," to a core algorithm of principles that are tailored individually and bring awareness to (a) att

Nonpharmacologic treatments of bulimia nervosa.

The principal psychosocial approach to the treatment of bulimia nervosa has been cognitive-behavioral therapy, the effectiveness of which has been extensively documented in controlled trials, with full recovery (cessation of binge eating and purging) in some 50% to 60% of patients. More recently, interpersonal therapy, first introduced for the treatment of depression, has been shown in preliminary studies to be as effective as cognitive-behavioral therapy, particularly at follow-up. The evidence for effectiveness of psychosocial therapies in bulimia nervosa is first reviewed, and consideration

Working alliance in exposure-based treatments of posttraumatic stress disorder related to childhood abuse.

OBJECTIVES: Working alliance is considered an important determinant of outcome of psychotherapy. Patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following childhood abuse (CA-PTSD) may have challenges in building interpersonal relationships, including working alliance. Phase-based treatment provides an opportunity to strengthen alliance prior to trauma-focused treatment. This study aimed to compare the development of working alliance among patients with CA-PTSD in three variants of prolonged exposure (PE) therapy: standard PE, intensive PE (iPE), and skill training in affective and interper

Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-based child maltreatment profiles to predict efficacy of the Cognitive Behavioral Analysis System of Psychotherapy versus non-specific psychotherapy in adults with early-onset chronic depression: cluster analysis of data from a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Child maltreatment is a broadly confirmed risk factor for mental and physical illness. Some psychological treatments specifically target mental health conditions associated with child maltreatment. For example, the Cognitive Behavioral Analysis System of Psychotherapy (CBASP) focuses on maladaptive interpersonal behaviours in chronic depression. However, how the assessment of child maltreatment could inform personalised treatment is unclear. We used data from a previously published clinical trial to investigate whether a pre-established child maltreatment clustering approach predic
