Understanding the role of interpersonal violence in assisted partner notification for HIV: a mixed-methods study in refugee settlements in West Nile Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Assisted partner notification (APN) for HIV was introduced in refugee settlements in West Nile Uganda in 2018 to facilitate testing of sexual partners. While APN is an effective strategy recommended by the World Health Organization, its safety has not been evaluated in a refugee settlement context in which participants have high prior exposure to interpersonal violence. The extent to which interpersonal violence influences APN utilization and the frequency with which post-APN interpersonal violence occurs remains unknown. METHODS: To explore the relationship between APN and interp

Hostility, job attitudes, and workplace deviance: test of a multilevel model.

The authors tested a model, inspired by affective events theory (H. M. Weiss & R. Cropanzano, 1996), that examines the dynamic nature of emotions at work, work attitudes, and workplace deviance. Sixty-four employees completed daily surveys over 3 weeks, reporting their mood, job satisfaction, perceived interpersonal treatment, and deviance. Supervisors and significant others also evaluated employees' workplace deviance and trait hostility, respectively. Over half of the total variance in workplace deviance was within-individual, and this intraindividual variance was predicted by momentary host

A multilevel structural equation modeling analysis of vulnerabilities and resilience resources influencing affective adaptation to chronic pain.

The processes of individual adaptation to chronic pain are complex and occur across multiple domains. We examined the social, cognitive, and affective context of daily pain adaptation in individuals with fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis. By using a sample of 260 women with fibromyalgia or osteoarthritis, we examined the contributions of pain catastrophizing, negative interpersonal events, and positive interpersonal events to daily negative and positive affect across 30days of daily diary data. Individual differences and daily fluctuations in predictor variables were estimated simultaneously by

Detecting Features of Interpersonal Difficulties in First-Person Accounts of Schizophrenia; Automated Linguistic and Network Analyses.

BACKGROUND: First-person accounts (FPAs) provide multi-faceted insights into the lived social experiences of schizophrenia. We examined FPAs and third-person accounts (TPAs) using automated linguistic and network analyses to extract narrative patterns in relation to interpersonal difficulties. STUDY DESIGN: Narratives from 279 articles published in Schizophrenia Bulletin (1979-2025) were screened to identify 133 FPAs and 44 TPAs. Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire was used to assess syndromes of schizotypy expressed in the narratives. At least one cognitive-perceptual syndrome (ideas of re

Does the interpersonal model apply across eating disorder diagnostic groups? A structural equation modeling approach.

BACKGROUND: Interpersonal model has been validated with binge-eating disorder (BED), but it is not yet known if the model applies across a range of eating disorders (ED). PURPOSE: The goal of this study was to investigate the validity of the interpersonal model in anorexia nervosa (restricting type; ANR and binge-eating/purge type; ANBP), bulimia nervosa (BN), BED, and eating disorder not otherwise specified (EDNOS). PROCEDURE: Data from a cross-sectional sample of 1459 treatment-seeking women diagnosed with ANR, ANBP, BN, BED and EDNOS were examined for indirect effects of interpersonal pro

Childhood trauma and adult interpersonal relationship problems in patients with depression and anxiety disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Although a plethora of studies have delineated the relationship between childhood trauma and onset, symptom severity, and course of depression and anxiety disorders, there has been little evidence that childhood trauma may lead to interpersonal problems among adult patients with depression and anxiety disorders. Given the lack of prior research in this area, we aimed to investigate characteristics of interpersonal problems in adult patients who had suffered various types of abuse and neglect in childhood. METHODS: A total of 325 outpatients diagnosed with depression and anxiety

Shame on me for needing you: A multistudy examination of links between receiving interpersonal emotion regulation and experiencing shame.

Recent theory and research have drawn attention to interpersonal dimensions of emotion regulation. Yet, few empirical investigations of the outcomes of interpersonal emotion regulation have been conducted. We propose that one negative affective outcome of received interpersonal emotion regulation of conceptual and practical interest is shame. In the present series of studies, participants from six disparate samples reported on experiences of receiving interpersonal emotion regulation using autobiographical recall and ecological sampling paradigms (total analyzed n = 1,868; total analyzed k = 2

Interpersonal style and anxiety.

Agoraphobic anxiety has been linked to traditional feminine sex role attitudes and related dyadic interactions. This research correlated measures of panic experience and agoraphobic anxiety with interpersonal style in a college student population. Significant positive correlations were observed between anxiety scores and the following interpersonal styles: submissive/deferent, self-effacing/obedient, mistrusting/cold, submissive, inhibited, and unassured. Results lend support to clinical reports that some individuals may develop agoraphobic symptoms as a result of the interaction of interperso

Social-emotion recognition in borderline personality disorder.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by interpersonal disturbances, but the neurocognitive aspects of these symptoms are poorly understood. We hypothesized that patients with BPD have impaired perception of emotional expressions, which are related to symptoms of interpersonal dysfunction. To control potential confounding factors, this study excluded subjects with comorbid diagnoses known to be associated with impaired affect perception. We tested 43 outpatients with BPD and 26 healthy controls on emotion recognition tasks (facial, prosodic, and integrated facial/prosodic), no

Interpersonal synchrony in caregiver-child dyads with autism spectrum condition: A scoping review.

PURPOSE: Interpersonal synchrony (IS), the temporal alignment of behavior and biological processes between interaction partners, is a key mechanism for social engagement and co-regulation. While well-studied in neurotypical populations, its nature in caregiver-autistic child dyads remains fragmented. This scoping review maps the current knowledge on IS in these dyads across behavioral and biological levels and identifies methods and interactional contexts used for its measurement. METHODS: A literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science on October 12, 2024, with an upd

Sexual Health and Relationship Education Needs of People in Recovery for an Opioid Use Disorder.

People in recovery with histories of sex and drug-linked behavior (SDB) have an increased risk of substance use recurrence. However, sexual health concerns remain largely unaddressed by recovery support services researchers and practitioners. The purpose of this analysis was to describe the sex and relationship concerns of people in recovery for an opioid use disorder living in level II and level III recovery homes. Recovery homes are sober living homes that the National Association for Recovery Residences classifies into four levels based on staffing and service provision. We interviewed 93 r

Dual-substance use disorder couples: An integrative review and proposed theoretical model.

Committed romantic relationships between two individuals with Substance Use Disorder (or dual-SUD couples) are prevalent. Dual-SUD couples have poor treatment engagement and outcomes. Research has established a reciprocal link between relationship dynamics (e.g., conflict, intimacy) and substance use. Thus, the couple's relationship presents a distinct social context for both partner's substance use. Dual-SUD couples face unique challenges due to substance use being a shared behavior that may serve as a rewarding source of compatibility, closeness, and short-term relationship satisfaction desp

[Study of relational collusion in infertile couples with a possible psychogenic background].

The authors have investigated the psychodynamic background of possible psychogenic infertility in twenty couples. Four levels were studied: 1. Functioning of the relationship was measured with the Consensus Rorschach Test, following communication patterns in the couples. 2. Individual psychological functioning was investigated with the Individual Rorschach Test, positive and negative choices were asked, and titles were given to the figures. 3. Positive and negative reactions to particular image stimuli were also recorded, thus the joint psychological functioning of the couple was analysed. 4.

Interpersonal problems among patients suffering from panic disorder with agoraphobia before and after treatment.

The aim of this study was to examine interpersonal problems among panic disorder with agoraphobia patients before and after treatment. Patients (N = 46) suffering from panic disorder with moderate or severe agoraphobia and considering agoraphobia as their main problem were randomly assigned to receive either cognitive therapy or guided mastery therapy in a six-week in-patient group programme. The Inventory of Interpersonal Problems (IIP) and various symptom measures were administered at pretreatment and at one-year follow-up. Two IIP subscales were derived from factor analysis of the present d

What makes an intervention dyadic? Introducing the DYADIC meta-framework to Describe Your focAl Dyadic Intervention Components.

BACKGROUND: Engaging in health behaviors often occurs within a social context. This recognition has led to a notable growth in intervention approaches designed explicitly to involve a "close other," often referred to as dyadic interventions. Yet, there has been surprisingly little discussion of what makes an intervention dyadic. METHODS: To address this gap, we developed the DYADIC meta-framework (Describe Your focAl Dyadic Intervention Components) based on iterative discussions. RESULTS: The DYADIC meta-framework delineates 4 dimensions that capture distinct ways an intervention can be dyad

Understanding gender differences across relationship stages requires integrating evolutionary, ontological, and proximate mechanisms.

Many commentaries subscribe to the main conclusions of the target article. Here, we primarily address the need for greater theorizing and empirical findings that seem contradictory to parts of our conclusions. We highlight the importance of integrating evolutionary, ontological, and proximate mechanisms in order to understand differences more comprehensively between men and women in heterosexual relationships in most Western societies.

Are men more dependent or more powerful than women?

Dependence varies with the balance of power between romantic partners, such that the partner who invests less holds greater power than the partner who invests more. Women's tendency to invest more emotionally, cognitively, and behaviorally in romantic relationships puts men in a position of greater power. Men's over-benefited or advantaged status makes them less dependent on romantic partners, not more.
