Solitary intestinal myofibroma an unusual cause of neonatal intestinal obstruction.

Congenital solitary myofibroma is an exceptional tumor of newborn period and presents as solitary or multiple lesions usually confined to soft tissues. It induces intestinal obstruction or perforation, which most frequently involves the jejunum and ileum. However, jejunoileal atresia is the most frequently encountered cause of small bowel obstruction in the neonatal period. We report a new case of solitary myofibroma located in the wall of the ileum, measuring 2.3 cm2 in size, about 25 cm from the ileocecal junction, in a 17-day-old baby girl who presented with abdominal distention and bilious

[Intestinal non-Hodgkin lymphoma: "immunoproliferative small intestinal disease"].

Immunoproliferative small intestinal disease (IPSID), also known as alpha chain disease, is a rare disease. In the recent WHO classification of hematopoietic and lymphoid tissue, IPSID is considered as a variant of extranodal mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma. Campylobacter jejuni is a specific pathogen, found to be related to IPSID. Diagnosis is based on histology and immunochemistry (± fluorescent in situ hybridization), with presence of many variable levels of abnormal immunoglobulin in the serum, identified to be truncated alpha-heavy chains. Early-stage disease is treated

Intestinal resection induces angiogenesis within adapting intestinal villi.

PURPOSE: Adaptive growth of the intestinal mucosa in response to massive gut loss is fundamental for autonomy from parenteral nutrition. Although angiogenesis is essential for cellular proliferation in other tissues, its relevance to intestinal adaptation is unknown. We tested the hypothesis that resection-induced adaptation is associated with new blood vessel growth. METHODS: Male C57Bl/6 mice underwent either a 50% small bowel resection or a sham (transection and reanastomosis) operation. After 1, 3, or 7 days, capillary density within the intestinal villi was measured using confocal micros

Effects of intestinal electrical stimulation on intestinal dysrhythmia and symptoms in dogs.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of intestinal electrical stimulation on small intestinal dysrhythmia and motion sickness-like symptoms induced by vasopressin. Female dogs chronically implanted with two pairs of electrodes on jejunum serosa were used in a four-session study. Saline and vasopressin were infused in sessions 1 and 2, respectively. Sessions 3 and 4 were the same as session 2, except a long- or short-pulse intestinal electrical stimulation was applied on the proximal pair of electrodes. Intestinal slow waves and motion sickness-like symptoms were recorded in each

Intestinal motility during ontogeny and intestinal pseudo-obstruction in children.

From the fragmentary studies performed to date of both functional obstruction and the ontogeny of intestinal motility, several conclusions can be drawn. The development of motor activity that is primarily dependent on neuronal activity, such as sucking, swallow-induced peristalsis of the esophagus, and cyclic fasting small intestinal motor activity, occurs according to a timetable that is similar in all species studies is gestationally dependent, but its timing during gestation is species specific. Postprandial events, including gastric emptying and continuous postprandial motor activity in th

Effect of intestinal helminthiasis on intestinal permeability of early primary schoolchildren.

Intestinal permeability of 246 early primary schoolchildren at 2 schools (106 of whom were infected with intestinal helminths) was assessed by using the lactulose/mannitol differential absorption test. The ratio of the urinary recoveries of lactulose and mannitol was determined after oral administration of a standard solution of the 2 sugars. Assessment of intestinal permeability was repeated on 100 infected children after treatment and on a cohort of 68 uninfected children. Infected and uninfected groups were compared with respect to baseline lactulose/mannitol ratio (L/M1) and change in lact

Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth in dogs with chronic intestinal disease.

Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) was diagnosed by quantitative bacterial culture of duodenal juice samples obtained endoscopically in 41 of 80 dogs that were admitted with chronic diarrhea, vomiting, or weight loss. Thirteen dogs had aerobic bacterial overgrowth, most frequently comprising Escherichia coli, staphylococci, and enterococci, and 28 dogs had mixed anaerobic overgrowth, most frequently including Clostridium and Bacteroides spp. Affected dogs comprised 23 breeds, including 10 German Shepherd Dogs and median age at diagnosis was 2 years (range, 6 months to 11 years). High

[Intestinal surgery in the treatment of stenoses of the small intestine in Crohn disease].

Strictureplasty is an alternative to extensive and/or multiple small bowel resections in the surgical treatment of Crohn's disease. We here report a series of 22 patients (12 M-10 F--mean age years: 28). All patients had a non-perforative form of Crohn's disease lasting for a mean of 8 years. Nine out of 22 had had previous intestinal resection. A total of 201 stenosis was identified during peroperative examination (mean per patient: 9). Only tight stenoses (diameter < 2 cms) were treated while others were left untouched (n = 22 in 11 patients). Eighty-three stenoses were treated by short stri

[Congenital diverticulum of the small intestine: Meckel's diverticulum or intestinal duplication?].

A congenital diverticulum of the small intestine is a condition with only a low morbidity and is generally a Meckel's diverticulum. There is, however, another congenital malformation, which can closely resemble a Meckel's diverticulum, but has another etiology, the tubular duplication of the small intestine. The authors point out the embryologic, anatomic and histological findings between these different but very similar malformations. It seems that the diagnosis of duplication is not often considered when finding a diverticulum of the small intestine and such a malformation is too easily call

[An experimental assessment of methods for applying intestinal sutures in intestinal obstruction].

The results of various methods used in applying intestinal sutures in obturation were studied. Three series of experiments were conducted on 30 dogs--resection of the intestine after obstruction with the formation of anastomoses by means of double-row suture (Albert--Shmiden--Lambert) in the first series (10 dogs), by a single-row suture after V. M. Mateshchuk [correction of Mateshuku] in the second series, and bu a single-row stretching suture suggested by the author in the third series. The postoperative complications and the parameters of physical airtightness of the intestinal anastomosis

Closed loop intestinal obstruction due to vitello-intestinal remnants.

Two young children presented with acute small bowel obstruction associated with closed loop ileal obstruction caused by Meckel's diverticulum and vitello-intestinal duct remnant respectively. In each, resection of the vitelline remnant and ischaemic ileum with primary small bowel anastomosis resulted in good recovery.

Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth and Intestinal Methanogen Overgrowth: Are They Overdiagnosed?

Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth was originally described as a cause of maldigestion and malabsorption, and its diagnosis was based on the culture of aspirates from the upper small intestine. The application of hydrogen breath tests to assess suspected small intestinal bacterial overgrowth increased the frequency of this diagnosis dramatically, and expanded its clinical context from maldigestion to include a number of non-specific gastrointestinal complaints and even some systemic ills. However, a critical review of recent literature suggests that reliance on breath tests, particularly th
