This paper outlines an air pollution study carried out on Dublin city's recently completed boardwalk along the side of and overhanging the River Liffey. Air quality samples were taken along the length of the boardwalk to investigate whether pedestrians using the boardwalk would have a lower air pollution exposure than those using the adjoining footpath along the road. The results of the study show significant reductions in pedestrian exposure to both traffic derived particulates and hydrocarbons along the boardwalk as opposed to the footpath. To inform future health promotion programmes, we studied the knowledge, attitudes and behaviour of the Northern Ireland population to sun care. An interviewer-administered questionnaire was applied to one adult per household from a random sample of 1242 addresses. Clinical, parasitological and entomological surveys performed in 9 villages on Lihir Island, Papua New Guinea, before mass treatment with diethylcarbamazine (DEC), showed that lymphatic filariasis, caused by nocturnally periodic Wuchereria bancrofti, was endemic in 8 of them. This paper presents the results of analysis of condemnations of pig livers due to cirrhosis which, in temperature climates, gives an accurate estimation of Ascaris suum infections. Over the 23 years analysed, a very highly significant upward trend in the prevalence of A. suum is demonstrated. The association between the prevalence and the mean air temperature over the early summer period is highlighted. Thorough cleansing of pig units in early spring and at various times during the summer are suggested as the most appropriate control measure.

A retrospective study was carried out of 456 patients with small bowel obstruction (SBO). The operative findings of all patients who presented with SBO between 1977 and 1982 were compared and contrasted with those who presented during equivalent periods in the previous three decades.
