PURPOSE: To demonstrate the correlation of ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) features of iris melanoma with histopathology.
DESIGN: Retrospective analysis of medical records.
METHODS: The medical records of patients that underwent surgery for iris melanoma at the Princess Margaret Hospital, University of Toronto, from June 1990 to October 1998 were reviewed. The clinical features, as well as the UBM findings prior to surgical intervention, were evaluated. The anatomic features noted on UBM were correlated with histopathologic features seen in the surgical specimens.

We report a case of an acute endothelial failure after the implantation of a new cosmetic, colored, artificial iris diaphragm implant called NewIris(®). A 21-year-old woman came to us complaining of progressive loss of vision and pain after NewIris lenses had been implanted. Decreased visual acuity, corneal edema, and increased intraocular pressure in both eyes appeared only 3 weeks after the surgery. PURPOSE: Local treatment of uveal melanoma by radiotherapy involves the use of brachytherapy with radioactive plaques attached to the sclera, or proton irradiation. Both treatments induce growth arrest within the tumour and its slow involution over several years. Although ocular retention rates are excellent, regrowth of tumours due to resistance and neovascular glaucoma leads to enucleation of up to 10% of affected eyes. Iridoschisis is a rare condition frequently associated with age-related cataract. Phacoemulsification can be difficult to perform in these eyes, as the detached iris fibrils that are typically present free float in the anterior chamber and are attracted to the phaco tip and the irrigation/aspiration handpiece port. The authors describe a 6-year-old child, with a history of acute lymphoblastic leukemia, who presented with leukemic infiltration of the anterior segment of one eye mimicking anterior uveitis. After tissue diagnosis, administration of radiation therapy to the affected eye resulted in dramatic improvement of the condition. Involvement of the iris and anterior chamber is a recognized but unusual manifestation of leukemia. In the absence of systemic relapse, local radiation therapy without chemotherapy is highly effective, although the prognosis in these patients may be guarded.
