Intrafamilial marriage is favoured by the Arab community in Israel, almost all of whom live in villages populated by a few (< 20) founding families. A community-wide health education programme for the prevention and early detection of cancer was performed in the Krayot municipalities, north of Haifa, Israel, during the years 1985-86. In order to assess its effectiveness, an evaluation programme was conducted. STUDY OBJECTIVES: To determine the influence of maternal characteristics on the incidence and duration of breast feeding.
DESIGN: All the women who delivered in three obstetric wards within a two year period were surveyed. These three wards cover 93% of all births in the Jerusalem district. Women were interviewed on breast feeding of the previous child on the first or second day post partum by a research nurse.
PARTICIPANTS: Altogether 8486 women whose previous pregnancy had resulted in a live born singleton who survived for at least one year.

DESIGN: Population-based epidemiologic study.
SUBJECTS: Eighteen thousand three hundred sixty-four males and 9673 females aged 16 to 17 years screened for induction into the Israel Defense Force.

We have analysed epidemiological parameters in 339 patients with myeloproliferative disorders (MPD) diagnosed in northern Israel between 1975 and 1989 as having polycythemia vera (191 patients), agnogenic myeloid metaplasia (AMM) (113) and essential thrombocythemia (ET) (36). Laparoscopic cholecystectomy has changed the treatment of symptomatic gallstones. We present an initial experience with this technique. From March 1990 to March 1991, there were 250 patients who were studied. There were 182 females and 68 males, with most classified as American Society of Anesthesiology Index Class I or II. All procedures were done using electrocautery. There was a definite learning curve for the procedure as evidenced by the duration of the operation. Over a period of 10 years 34 patients were diagnosed as suffering from palindromic rheumatism. Eighty-one percent of the patients were of North African origin. The survival, and the patterns and mechanisms of failure of 41 patients with pure testicular seminoma treated at the Northern Israel Oncology Center from 1968 to 1983 were analyzed. The actuarial 5-year survival of all patients was 85.4% and of stage I patients, 92.2%. Treatment failures were analyzed. A study has been made of 3,745 Bedouin and 9,422 Jewish babies born in 1972-73 to residents of the Beersheba district of southern Israel (the Negev). Newborn infants weighing less than 1 kg were excluded. Thirty-seven percent of the Bedouin babies were born at home; their mothers tended to be older and of higher parity than those choosing to deliver in hospital.
