The basic indication for Baker tube plication is widespread enteric serosal injury. The prediction of subsequent small bowel obstruction remains difficult. Consequently, the benefits of Baker tube plication cannot be clearly defined. A therapeutic decision must be made by weighing the known facts. In this series of 160 Baker tube plications, the incidence of tube complications was 7 percent. Witzel tunnel construction of the jejunostomy was judged important in reducing the complications of this procedure. The incidence of recurrent obstruction was 9 percent with an average follow-up period of …

A case of multiloculated choledochal cyst occurring in an 18-year-old girl is presented. The choledochus which contained multiple pigment stones was excised as the primary treatment and the patient remains well on two year follow-up. Ten additional cases of choledochal cyst treated in the past 20 years have been reviewed. It is concluded that excision of the choledochus is a safe and acceptable treatment of choledochal cyst in young low risk patients and that the alternative treatment of Roux-en-Y choledochocyst-jejunostomy gives satisfactory results.

If full-thickness mucosa, including the mucosal crypt, has been almost denuded, mucosa cannot regenerate as has been shown by animal models. The authors experienced an unusual mucosal regeneration exceed denuded bowel that occur in midgut volvulus of duration 2 days in a 6-day-old infant. Santulli's jejunostomy was performed using seriously denuded small bowel to prevent short bowel syndrome, despite the risks of leakage or stricture. Subsequently, stomal mucosa was fully regenerated when grossly identified 19 days after the second operation without any surgical complications.

The best method of providing waterproof protection for susceptible ears remains a contentious issue. Many evaluations have concentrated on the efficacy of intraluminal plugs in normal or model ears. We describe a new method, using a jejunostomy shower cap (Dansac mini cap), which avoids intraluminal insertion. This method has proved useful in some patients who have failed to avoid repeated otorrhoea after water exposure despite using a wide range of intraluminal ear plugs. The shower caps are best avoided in children because of teasing.

OBJECTIVES: Choledochal cyst is a congenital disease in which surgical treatment is preliminary because of the potential for malignancy. In recent years, increase in technological developments and laparoscopic experience have popularised the use of laparoscopy in adult choledochal cyst surgery. This study aimed to present the results of eight adult patients undergoing laparoscopic choledochal excision surgery.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Patients who underwent laparoscopic choledochal cyst excision and hepatico-jejunostomy anastomoses between the years 2013 and 2018 were evaluated retrospectively. …

AIM: To prospectively study the outcome of difficult gastroduodenal perforations (GDPs) treated by triple tube drainage (TTD) in order to standardize the procedure.
METHODS: Patients presenting to a single surgical unit of a tertiary hospital with difficult GDPs (large, unfavourable local and systemic factors) were treated with TTD (gastrostomy, duodenostomy and feeding jejunostomy). Postoperative parameters were observed like time to return of bowel sounds, time to start enteral feeds, time to start oral feeds, daily output of all drains, time to clamping/removal of all drains, time for skin…

BACKGROUND: A gastro-jejunal (G-J) feeding tube is a safe and useful temporizing method of providing enteral access in children. Although G-J tubes are often used to obviate the need for a surgical jejunostomy, their long-term use is often associated with mechanical failure.
AIM: To review the clinically effective durability of G-J feeding tubes in providing enteral access in children.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of 102 patients at the Johns Hopkins Children's Center from 1994-2003 whose underlying diagnosis necessitated the need for postpyloric enteral access.
RESULTS: Lon…

METHODS: The records of 10 infants with gastroschisis and intestinal atresia treated between 1991 and 1997 in a single neonatal surgical unit were reviewed.

BACKGROUND: Aim was to investigate the association between quality of life (QoL), bowel anatomy, and the need for home parenteral support (HPS) volume in patients with nonmalignant short-bowel syndrome (SBS) and intestinal failure (IF).
METHODS: The SBS-QoL scale was used in a cross-sectional study of 95 nonmalignant SBS-IF patients. Sum QoL scores (0: best, 170: worst) were calculated. Patients were defined as having a small bowel (≤200 cm), and patients with jejunostomy or ileostomy were subclassified based on functional small-bowel length (cm) into 4 anatomy subgroups: 1a-1d (0-49, 50-99, …

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing enterocolitis and congenital gastrointestinal malformations in infants often require intestinal resection, with a subsequent risk of short bowel syndrome (SBS). We hypothesized that immediate intestinal adaptation following resection of the distal intestine with placement of a jejunostomy differs between preterm and term neonates.
